5 WEEK 11: March 16, 2014 READING: I SAMUEL THE BIBLE IN A YEAR Background: The book of 1 Samuel tells of the major transition from the period when the twelve tribes were independent, ruled only by occasional judges, to the period of the kings and national unity. This transition is presented in a string of stories compellingly told. The stories have a cast of characters that are memorable and make for some of the Bible's most exciting reading. Here you will find the stories of the boy Samuel hearing the voice of God, of David and Goliath, of the madness of King Saul, and of Saul's nighttime visit to the witch of Endor. The three major characters around whom this history is woven are Samuel, called "the last of the judges and the first of the prophets;" Saul, the first king of Israel; and David. There is some overlap, but the first 8 chapters are about Samuel, chapters 9-15 are about Saul, and the rest of the book tells of the rise of David. I Samuel is the first of a four-part history. At one time the books were called 1 Kingdoms, 2 Kingdoms, 3 Kingdoms, and 4 Kingdoms. Today we refer to them as 1 & 2 Samuel and 1 & 2 Kings. Points to Ponder: The kingdom of earth and the kingdom of God. The early part of 1 Samuel shows two different judgments about whether having a king was a good idea. Israel is warned: 1. that ultimately God is king. In other words, no nation has the right to demand allegiance that belongs to God. 2. that kings and governments tend to abuse their power, 3. and that they often forget that their main purpose is to protect the poor, the weak, and the marginal persons of society. The relationship between earthly governments and the kingdom of God is still difficult. Can you think of parallels between ancient Israel and modern America in (a), (b), and (c) above? The holiness of God is emphasized in 1 Samuel. David refused to kill Saul because Saul was "anointed by God." The Ark of the Covenant brings death and plague. What does the "holiness" of God have to say to our time? Another theme of this book is that faith saves. God saves Israel with thunder when Samuel offers a sacrifice (1 Sam. 7:8-10). David is not afraid to face Goliath because David believes that God will care for him. Who are your goliaths? What does your own faith tell you about them? Some Study Questions: 1. Who called Samuel's name at night? (1 Samuel 3:8) 2. Who made five gold mice? (1 Samuel 6) 3. What is one thing Samuel counted as a sin against God? (1 Samuel 12:23) 4. How does God see a person? (1 Samual 16:7) 5. Why did David act as if he were crazy? (1 Samuel 21:12) 6. Who killed King Saul? (1 Samuel 31:4)
