2 Letter from the Vice President Dear Ball State student, I m so pleased to welcome you to Ball State University and Welcome Week The events of this week build on the summer orientation program, introduce you to Ball State s vibrant campus life, and help you make important connections within our supportive campus community. During Welcome Week, you will have opportunities to learn how to make a successful transition to college, explore our comprehensive resources to help you in that transition, and meet other students. I encourage you to attend Ball State Athletics: Chirp! Chirp! the evening of Thursday, August 20. Our president, Paul W. Ferguson, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Mark Sandy, Ball State coaches, cheerleaders, Code Red Dance Team, Pride of Mid-America Marching Band, and Charlie Cardinal will be there to tell you about our athletics program and help you learn the fight song. On Saturday, August 22, plan to visit the Activity Fair to discover Ball State s many student organizations and the benefits of getting involved on campus. One of my favorite events of the year is the Freshman Convocation on Sunday, August 23. President Ferguson will formally welcome you, the class of 2019, to Ball State University. This event will introduce you to Ball State s academic traditions and help you begin on the right foot as you start classes in your first semester. The Freshman Convocation is the first official event for new freshmen at Ball State. I look forward to seeing you there! You begin your studies here at an exciting time in Ball State s history. Our campus is thriving with recently built or renovated residence halls, state-of-the-art learning labs, academic buildings and studios, and incredible recreational facilities. We are continuing to build on our tradition of innovation by providing you with unparalleled access to world-class faculty and chances to learn in an intense, creative, and collaborative way. Representatives from the Student Honors Council will describe leadership opportunities. A picnic in the backyard of the Ball Honors House for the Honors Living-Learning Community will follow the ceremony. 4

6 5:15 p.m. 6:45 p.m. 21st Century Scholars Symposium Location: Pruis Hall The 21st Century Scholars Symposium is a mandatory event for all incoming freshmen with a 21st Century Scholar award. During this event we will review scholar requirements, program expectations, and introduce you to campus staff and resources dedicated to your success. 5:30 6:30 p.m. Blackboard Learning Session Location: Ball Communications Building, Room 127 Blackboard is a web-based course-management system by which faculty deliver course content to students. Your teachers may use Blackboard to post syllabi, create exams, host online class discussions, and make important files available to you. Stop by BC 127 to learn how to navigate Blackboard so you can maximize your academic success with the help of cool technologies. Another session is offered on Friday, August 21, 2 3 p.m. at Pruis Hall. 7:45 8:30 p.m. Residence Hall Floor Meetings Hosted by your friendly resident assistant (RA), this is a great time to learn important information about your new home, meet your neighbors, and begin your year in the residence halls. You will also meet your Welcome Week leader. 9 p.m. Ball State Athletics: Chirp! Chirp! Location: Worthen Arena Join President Paul W. Ferguson and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Mark Sandy for an introduction to your athletics programs. The Ball State cheerleaders, Code Red Dance Team, Pride of Mid-America Marching Band, and Charlie Cardinal will lead the cheers and teach you the fight song. Get your spirit shirt, among other prizes, and one lucky freshman will earn the opportunity to shoot a half-court shot to win free tuition for the 2016 spring semester. Ball State coaches will be on hand to get you fired up about Ball State Athletics. Chirp! Bring your class schedule with you. 11 a.m. 2 p.m. Spiritual Life Fair Location: Art and Journalism Building, The Atrium This fair will feature a variety of Ball State student organizations that focus on spiritual and religious life on campus. You will be able to meet leaders of these groups and collect information on their activities and events. 6

8 11 a.m. 2 p.m. Writing Center Open House Location: Robert Bell Building, Room 295 Visit the Writing Center for food and games! Learn how to make an appointment and get to know our tutors. Noon 2 p.m. Interfraternity Council Events at the Rec Location: Jo Ann Gora Student Recreation and Wellness Center Come out and meet 14 of the Ball State fraternities and participate in various activities. Noon 3 p.m. Off-Campus Job Fair Location: Front lawn of Whitinger Business Building (rain location Atrium Dining Studio, Room 150) Hosted by the Ball State Career Center. Meet with local employers to learn about part-time job openings, open to all students. 1 2 p.m. Mock Class Lecture Location: Arts and Communications Building, Room 114 Hosted by professors across campus, this interactive lecture will show you what to expect on your first day of classes. You will have the opportunity to learn about the classroom setting, expectations, and receive a few tips about how to be successful in the classroom. Another session is offered on Saturday, August 22, 1 2 p.m. 1 2 p.m. Elemental: A Sexual Assault Protection Program Demonstration Location: North Quad, Room 142 Members of Elemental will provide a brief introduction to our multimedia sexual assault protection program. Based on the techniques and strategies of the ninja, this program will teach you, in a safe environment, how to protect yourself from realistic sexual assault situations. It is open to everyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Participate in this demo and, if interested, join us for the full program during the fall semester. 7

9 1 4 p.m. Outdoor Pursuits Adventures Water Sports Location: Prairie Creek Reservoir, Muncie Transportation provided to/from SRWC) Join Ball State s Outdoor Pursuits for an afternoon at Prairie Creek Reservoir! Outdoor Pursuits will bring all the toys so you can try stand-up paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking, and much more. Start your Ball State career with a splash! This event is free to Ball State students and includes transportation, equipment, and instruction. Space is limited. On this beginner-friendly ride, we will explore Minnetrista, visit a smoothie shop, and take in other sites along the way. This event is free to Ball State students and includes transportation, equipment, and instruction smoothie is on you. Space is limited. Register at bsu.edu/recreation, no later than end of the day, Thursday, August :30 p.m. Hypnotist Dan LaRosa Location: Emens Auditorium Back by popular demand Dan LaRosa, America s fastest and funniest hypnotist, will make you laugh and amaze you by hypnotizing you or your friends. 8

Starting today, there will be fine art prints and posters for sale all week. The last day to purchase items is Friday, August p.m. Recreation Exploration Location: Jo Ann Gora Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Field Sports Building Visit the Jo Ann Gora Student Recreation and Wellness Center for an afternoon of fun! Earn free t-shirts, Rec Bucks, and other prizes while sampling all of the awesome recreational opportunities provided by the Office of Recreation Services. Come prepared to Get Out and Play! 1 2 p.m. Mock Class Lecture Location: Art and Communications Building, Room 114 Hosted by professors across campus, this interactive lecture will show you what to expect on your first day of classes. You will have the opportunity to learn about the classroom setting, expectations, and receive a few tips about how to be successful in the classroom. 2 3 p.m. Transfer Student Reception Location: Kinghorn Hall, Multipurpose Room Transfer students will have the opportunity to mingle with other transfer students, meet the Transfer Ambassadors, and Ball State staff. Enjoy complimentary punch and cookies. Bring a T-shirt from your former institution and swap it for a Ball State University T-shirt. We encourage you to stay on campus for additional activities and events to help in your transition to the Ball State community including a scavenger hunt through campus with the Transfer Living Learning Community, transfer dinner, and the Activity Fair. 9

11 2 7 p.m. Commuting 101 Location: Pruis Hall Mandatory for all commuting freshmen, this unique workshop addresses commuter student needs and issues. You ll meet other commuters, be introduced to your Commuter Ambassador, become familiar with the campus, learn key skills for commuters, and end your day at the Activity Fair (see details below). Registration begins at 1:30 p.m., with the program starting promptly at 2 p.m. 4 5 p.m. Where Are My Classes? Your Welcome Week leader will be available to help you find your classes. Meet your Welcome Week leader in the lobby of your hall at 4 p.m., if you would like help. Bring your class schedule with you. 6 8 p.m. Activity Fair Location: Jo Ann Gora Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Basketball Courts The Office of Student Life sponsors the Activity Fair, which is a great way to explore getting involved on campus. More than 250 student organizations and departments will be represented at the fair, and members will be on hand to provide information and answer questions. Involvement in student organizations is a great way to meet people and learn valuable skills that are transferable to real life. Part of your Ball State experience should be getting involved explore your options at the Activity Fair. Free ice cream will be provided by the Student Government Association (SGA). Coinciding with the Activity Fair, representatives from local banks, businesses, and community organizations will be on hand to provide information and answer questions. 9 p.m. 1 a.m. Late Ball State Presents The Best Party on Campus! Location: L.A. Pittenger Student Center (Late Nite Loop Shuttle Bus will be running) Come out to the BEST PARTY on CAMPUS and enjoy amazing free food (BBQ), DJ dance party, movies, live entertainment, cosmic bowling, inflatable games, Rock Climbing Wall, and so much more! Late Nite is free with your Ball State Cardinal ID card! Want to bring a friend? All guests are just $5 each and must be accompanied by a Ball State student, faculty, or staff. Guests must be at least 16 years of age. 10

12 Late Ball State offers a series of high-energy events that provide quality entertainment for Ball State students from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. every Saturday night throughout the academic year. Late Nite events are hosted by students for students and always include great food, awesome activities, and tons of fun. Late Nite is also more than an event it s a chance to experience the behind-thescenes aspects of entertainment by creating, planning, and conducting awesome events. If you like entertainment, are interested in event planning and want to have fun, join Late Ball State! Stop by a Late Nite meeting on Mondays at 9:15 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center, room 303, us at latenite@ bsu.edu, or check out bsu.edu/latenite for details on weekly events and how to get involved. Sunday, August 23 1:45 3 p.m. Freshman Convocation (mandatory) Location: Emens Auditorium The Freshman Convocation is the university s official first event for new freshmen at Ball State. The Convocation formally welcomes freshmen to the beginning of their academic career and introduces them to Ball State s community involvement and its student-centered commitment to its newest members in the community of learners. In assembling with faculty, staff, and administrators, the freshmen gain a sense of identity that more deeply connects them to each other and to the university. New freshmen who live in the residence halls will come to the Convocation with their resident assistant (RA). Transfer students also are encouraged to attend. 3:15 4:15 p.m. Book Discussion Groups (mandatory) Location: Various Sites At 3 p.m., new students will be escorted to various classrooms on campus to discuss the Freshman Common Reader that was distributed at the summer orientation program. Students should bring their copy of the book and their completed assignments to the Freshman Convocation in Emens Auditorium (see above). Funny in Farsi is a collection of stories that remind us of the power of family and home and the importance of finding your own path. You may meet the author and hear her speak on Tuesday, September 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Emens Auditorium. We look forward to seeing you at these events! 11

13 4:30 p.m. College of Architecture and Planning First-Year Welcome Location: Architecture Building, Room 100 This event is a welcome to all students admitted to the College of Architecture and Planning s fall and spring studios of the CAP Common First-Year Program. Meet fellow CAP student mentors, learn about the year s curriculum, and get a special introduction to CAP s deans, department chairs, faculty, and staff. 7 8 p.m. Family and Consumer Sciences Freshman Welcome Session Location: Applied Technology Building, Room 104 Students planning to major in apparel design, child life specialist, family studies, child development, family and consumer sciences (general or education), interior design, dietetics, fashion merchandising, hospitality and food management, or residential property management are invited to this special networking event hosted by student organization leaders and faculty of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. Come to meet and network with upper-level class officers and faculty. 9 p.m. Residence Hall Floor Meetings Everyone has moved in, so come out and meet others who live in your hall! Important details about residence hall living will be covered. Monday, August 24 Classes Begin! We are here to help, so stop by if you have questions or need information. 6 7:30 p.m. Individual Dietary Needs Meeting Location: The Atrium s Studio Room (across from Jamba Juice) Meet dining chefs, managers, and wellness nutritionists to learn more about navigating campus with food allergies, celiac disease, or other dietary needs. Students are encouraged to bring a completed Dietary Needs Form (medical documentation) with them to the meeting if they haven t already submitted one to the Ball State dining office; however, this is not required for attendance. Blank dietary needs forms can be found online at bsu.edu/dining/ nutritioninformation and choose individual dietary needs p.m. UPB Callout Party Location: University Green (McKinley Avenue near the Bell Tower) Want to get involved in one of the largest, most rewarding student organizations on campus? Join the University Program Board (UPB) for its callout party, and get some free food and a look at what UPB has coming this semester. Then at 9:30 p.m., join us for our first meeting of the year and get involved with the student organization voted Best of Ball State four consecutive years. 13

15 Wednesday, August a.m. 2 p.m. Hang Out with the Greeks Location: Atrium Stop by the Atrium and enjoy some snacks and goodies while meeting fraternity and sorority members of our Greek community p.m. Welcome Back Bash Location: L.A. Pittenger Student Center, Cardinal Lanes Don t miss this welcome back party to kick off your fall semester! There will be free cosmic bowling, billiards, and gaming. While you re here, enjoy free hot dogs, popcorn, and soda. There will be many surprises during the night. Stop by Cardinal Lanes and the recreation area on the lower level of the Student Center and start your school year off right! 8 p.m. Grocery Bingo Location: Emens Auditorium (Doors open at 7 p.m.) Stock your fridge for the start of the semester with free groceries that you can win at our Grocery Bingo event. UPB will have lots of food, supplies, appliances, and other awesome prizes for attendees to take home at this FREE event! Thursday, August 27 All Day Giant Volleyball Pre-Registration Location: Visit our office (RC 201) in the Jo Ann Gora Student Recreation and Wellness Center or check out the link below to register. Get your team together for a 6-on-6 Giant Volleyball tournament! An oversized version of the game we all know, Giant Volleyball brings traditional volleyball together with beach volleyball to provide the best of both worlds. There s no entry fee, register on-site or pre-register at dosportseasy.com/bsu. Individuals are welcome! We will assist on-site with forming teams. For more information, visit bsu.edu/recreation. 14

Learn more about Greek life at Ball State! 4:30 7 p.m. Communications Living-Learning Community Kickoff Location: Botsford-Swinford Hall, Multipurpose Room Join faculty and students from the College of Communication, Information, and Media to learn more about the Communications Living-Learning Community, how you can be involved, and the great opportunities especially available to members of the community. This community is specifically designed for students pursuing majors and minors in communication studies, journalism, and telecommunications who will live, take classes, and participate in unique experiences together. Enjoy the picnic, win a prize, and take part advantage of this opportunity to meet college deans and faculty in your field of study. 5 7:30 p.m. Christian Student Foundation Ice Cream Social and Open House Location: Christian Campus House, 1411 West Riverside Avenue Students who are new to Ball State are invited to stop by the Christian Campus House (CCH) for information about our activities and events for the fall semester. The Open House will include ice cream, food, euchre, board games, and the opportunity to meet students involved in CCH. The Christian Campus House is located across the street from DeHority Complex and is a nondenominational student organization open to any Ball State student who would like to be involved in the group. 15

17 7 8 p.m. Hug an Elephant, Kiss a Giraffe: Redefining Diversity in Everyday Life Campuspeak Presents: Justin Jones-Fosu Location: Pruis Hall Are you interested in learning more about diversity? Sometimes we make diversity conversations so complex that people have missed its simple core and foundation. Diversity has also been made into a holding hands exercise where everybody agrees, but it really is more about authentic listening, being open and respecting others even when we don t agree. During this interactive program, you will learn more about the power that a diverse, engaged, socially-just college environment offers, and you will understand you role at Ball State to help create an environment where everyone matters and feels empowered to shape their college experience. Before and after the program, various departments and organizations will be available to discuss ways to get involved on campus p.m. Open-Mic Night Location: University Green (McKinley Avenue near the Bell Tower) Rain Location: L.A. Pittenger Student Center, Tally Are you a musician, comedian, or other talented performer? Show your stuff at University Program Board s Open-Mic Night! We ll have free drinks and snacks, and the stage will be full of great Ball State acts. Sign up to perform at the event or in the Student Center Program Office (SC-112) during the week. Friday, August p.m. Multicultural Center Welcome Celebration Location: L.A. Pittenger Student Center, Front Lawn (Rain Location: L.A. Pittenger Student Center, Ballroom) The Multicultural Center is a resource center for underrepresented minority students and for all students interested in cross-cultural learning and experiences. We invite all students to join us at our event to welcome all new students to campus and welcome back returning students. This event will include a multicultural organization resources fair. Meet members of the organizations and how you can get involved. Free food, great music, and a fun relaxing end to the first week of class! 16

18 6 11 p.m. Quad Bash Location: The Quad (Rain Location: Pruis Hall) One of Ball State s most beloved traditions is back and bigger than ever! Join us on the Quad for games, a live musical performance, and, of course, tons of free food. Once the stars come out, stick around for our first Friday Night Filmworks screening of the semester, Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. Saturday, August 29 Noon FREE 6-on-6 Giant Volleyball Tournament Location: Jo Ann Gora Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Gymnasium An oversized version of the game we all know, Giant Volleyball brings traditional volleyball together with beach volleyball to provide the best of both worlds. Register on-site or pre-register at dosportseasy.com/bsu. Individuals are welcome! Teams not pre-registered will be formed on-site. 3 6 p.m. Meet the Greeks and NPHC Yard Show Location: University Green Interested in joining a fraternity or sorority? Come meet the members of the Interfraternity Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and the Panhellenic Council and learn more about all of the fraternities and sororities on campus and how to join. Enjoy free food, music, games, and then stay for the NPHC Yard Show. 17
