4 RETIRED FACULTY AND STAFF CENTENNIAL SCHOLARSHIP Kathrine Muirhead, an Environmental Engineering major from Southern California and the Centennial Scholarship recipient extended her appreciation and gratitude when she attended this past June Jubilee. She is a delightful young woman, reflective of the high caliber students entering the University and worthy of our support. Continued best wishes Kathrine!! This interim Fair Market Value report is intended to keep you abreast of the status of our endowment during the year. It is subject to the various fluctuations in the investment market so you will see it ebb and flow as goes the market. It remains in good hands and this year we have seen it reach record highs thus enabling us to support an annual scholarship to a promising incoming freshman. The recipient will be announced later this Fall. WHO, WHEN, WHERE! Fair Market Value (July 31, 2013): $110,657 Please keep in mind that your designated contributions and life time membership fees go directly into the endowment s Principal balance and provide the anchor needed for continued scholarship funding. Thank You to all who continue to support this effort. Richard Equinoa, Scholarship Coordinator, September 2013 MARY LOU BRADY (Library) enjoys life in San Luis Obispo! JEAN DEGNAN (AgriBusiness) sends greetings from Colorado! ROBERT MCINTIRE (Management) remains active and participates in many organizations including his church, Rotary, Elks, Masons and Coast Hills Federal Credit Union board. He also still makes time for international travel. EVELYN REAGAN (Library) spends time bird and river watching during the salmon runs and is preparing for jamming season. MARJE RICH (Agricultural Engineering) writes bios for her retirement center and delivers the newspapers there. She finds time for her church s activities, as well as exercise classes, crossword puzzles and bingo. Her philosophy? Busy people are happy people! LOIS STADT (Library) has been taking watercolor and square dancing classes. She is also planning a September cruise to Portugal. WALTER STIER (College of Architecture) can be heard playing the French horn in the Allan Hancock Symphonic Band, and singing in his church choir. He also teaches a Bible study and occasionally works on wood and metal machining projects.

5 JOSEPH W. TRUEX (Graphic Communications) has gardening and upkeep projects to complete when he s not keeping up with family in Tennessee, Kansas and California. JUDY TYNER (Admin/Activities) enjoys Civil War research with her niece, who lives in Virginia. REMEMBERING OUR FRIENDS IN PASSING HANY M. KHALIL (Food Science & Nutrition) passed away in August. Hany was very involved in international development during his career that began at Cal Poly in EDITH ELIZABETH WELTER (Admin) passed away in July. Edith retired in WELCOME TO THE BOARD DR. DAN HOWARD-GREENE! Many of our Retired Faculty and Staff Club members have not had the opportunity to meet our new Vice President Dan Howard Greene, who retired in December of 2010 as Chief of Staff in the Office of the President. In his own words, Dan calls the time spent at Cal Poly exciting and a great opportunity to work with very talented and dedicated university faculty members, staff and administrators in support of an extraordinary group of students." From 1994 to 2010, Dan provided wide-ranging staff support to President Warren Baker. For example, he served as presidential liaison to the University vice presidents, faculty leadership and various campus and offcampus constituency groups. He provided staff support for the University s external advisory board, the President s Cabinet. He was a member of the Corporation Board, serving as chair for a number of years, edited Campus Administrative Policies and supported President Baker's work on a number of University initiatives, including the Centennial Campaign and Centennial Celebration. Further summing up his years at the University, Dan says he "particularly enjoyed the chance to meet so many interesting people, from diverse walks of life, but who all shared a strong commitment to Cal Poly." Prior to coming to Cal Poly, Dan served as Director of Planning and Institutional Research and Associate Professor at the University of South Carolina Lancaster from 1983 to While in South Carolina, he taught anthropology and sociology, wrote and administered institutional grants and helped develop a countywide strategic plan for Lancaster County. Lancaster is a small rural county in the Carolina Piedmont, where the textile industry had dominated the local economy for over a century and many college students were the first in their family to extend their education past the high school level. From 1975 to 1983, he completed a Master s Degree and Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Chicago. After high school in Carlsbad, California, Dan received a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from UC Santa Cruz in As a high school senior, Dan spent a year with

6 a Danish family outside Copenhagen and he recently hosted his Danish exchange year brother and his family on a visit to the Central Coast. In retirement, Dan serves as secretary of the SLO Rotary Club, enjoys the great hikes around the county, has a long reading list and helps Paula, his wife of 38 years, with home projects and upkeep where they live in Los Osos. Dan and Paula have two grown sons, Andrew (a SF State grad) and John (a Cal Poly grad), and are looking forward to welcoming their first grandchild soon.
