2 REGIONAL COORDINATOR MESSAGE Dear Conference Attendees: Welcome to the Wisconsin Region s Chapter Leadership Academy! As always, the goal of our summer conference is to introduce chapter members and officers to the leadership opportunities available through Phi Theta Kappa. While all Phi Theta Kappans have the opportunity to attend conferences, apply for scholarships, and expand their personal horizons, other Kappans also want to take on leadership roles as chapter officers, project leads, or committee chairs. These experiences can be extremely beneficial for students who want to go beyond classroom learning to get authentic experiences to prepare them for future success. Time spent engaged in your chapter and/or other campus organizations can provide opportunities to work on skills that are directly transferrable. As a result, your PTK experiences can set you apart from other candidates in a future job search. Getting involved on your campus and in your community can also provide networking opportunities, offer experiences that may help you qualify for scholarships, or simply enrich your college experience. The opportunities are truly limitless! Throughout this weekend, I hope you ll ask yourself some important questions: What are your goals for the upcoming year? How will you achieve those goals? How will you make your membership in Phi Theta Kappa meaningful? Have a great time this weekend! Enjoy this opportunity to grow and learn with your peers! 3 WISCONSIN PHI THETA KAPPA REGIONAL OFFICER TEAM Adrianna Truax Wisconsin Region President Beta Rho Zeta Chapter Northcentral Technical College Hello Wisconsin Phi Theta Kappans! My name is Adrianna Truax, and I m your Regional President. I m currently a student at Northcentral Technical College (NTC) where I ll graduate in Spring of 2019 with an associate s degree from the Paramedic Technician program. Upon graduating, I plan on working as a paramedic for a year before determining if I d like to continue schooling as pre-med, continue as a paramedic, or join the Army. I decided to pursue Phi Theta Kappa after my friend introduced me to her fellow Phi Theta Kappans and advisor. After seeing the opportunities to get involved on campus and the amount of comradery there was within the group, I knew I had found the place I belonged. I was motivated to complete the requirements to be invited into PTK, and I accepted membership in July of Since then, I ve listened to several inspirational speakers at three conferences, travel to Kansas City, Missouri, and walked across the stage at the 2018 Catalyst celebration. And I completed the endeavor I am most proud of, running for Wisconsin Regional President. Frequently, I m asked, Why did you run for a Regional Officer position? Like anyone, my decision was influenced by the benefits that came with not only earning the position but also just the act of running. In order to be selected, I was required to write and present a professional speech in front all of the Wisconsin PTK chapters at the Regional Convention in March This provided me an opportunity to do something I had never done before. Another aspect that heavily influenced my decision to run for a Regional Officer position was that I wanted to give back to an organization that has already given me so much. I ve made new lifelong friends, gained leadership skills, become more comfortable in front of groups, and overall, found a place where I belong. I will forever be grateful for all that PTK has done for me! As your Regional President, I vow to be a resource for not only your chapter but also for each individual Wisconsin PTK member. I will try to support you in achieving your goals and to help ensure Wisconsin continues to be recognized as an awardwinning region. Heather Schroeder Wisconsin Region Vice President Beta Epsilon Omicron Chapter Fox Valley Technical College Hello! My name is Heather Schroeder, and I m the Regional Vice- President for the Wisconsin Region for I attend Fox Valley Technical College (FVTC) in Appleton, Wis., and I m in the Individual Technical Studies Program for Educational Consulting. Once I finish my program in the Spring of 2019, I ll transfer to a four-year college to earn a degree in Special Education and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and become a certified English Teacher and teach in China and South Korea. As a non-traditional student, I ve worked through a year-and-ahalf of college and was recently inducted into Phi Theta Kappa in March. Through the support of my chapter, Beta Epsilon Omicron, I campaigned for the Regional Vice-President position at the Spring Regional Conference in Appleton in March. With support from my chapter, other chapters, and advisors, I ve been able to achieve more than I could ve ever dreamed. The Regional Vice-President role allows me to learn more about leadership development and how to teach others these skills, how to serve my community and surrounding areas, and public speaking skills. As an entrepreneur, the public speaking experience will significantly help me grow as a business owner and as the Regional Vice- President, a leader in my community and Phi Theta Kappa. As the Regional Vice-President, I plan to help increase the number of students who complete college and to help current members know of all the benefits of being a PTK member. Phi Theta Kappa is what you determine you want out if it. Serve your community and be active in your chapter and help represent the growing community of Phi Theta Kappans! Mary Williams Wisconsin Region Communications Director Beta Nu Chi Chapter Western Technical College My name is Mary Williams, and I am proud to be the Wisconsin Region s Communications Director for the school year. I attend Western Technical College in La Crosse where I have completed a Technical Diploma for the Educational Assistant Program. This summer, I will begin pursuing a degree in the Administrative Professional program. I joined Phi Theta Kappa in April of After the induction ceremony, I really wasn t active until I attended the Fall Leadership Conference in Madison. It was there that I decided that I liked this Phi Theta Kappa thing, especially the fellowship. I enjoyed gaining new friends and learned that all members not just officers could be involved in chapter projects. Subsequently, I helped with my chapter s College Project, attended meetings, and helped with other chapter initiatives. Because of my involvement, I was nominated by my chapter and received an award for Distinguished Chapter Member. I enjoyed being able to participate and experience the benefits that membership in Phi Theta Kappa had to offer. The desire to continue experiencing the benefits and opportunities of Phi Theta Kappa led me to seek a Regional Officer position. This past year was exceptionally difficult for me, but through everything, I have kept going. Because I did, I am now a Regional Officer for the Wisconsin Region of Phi Theta Kappa. I want to encourage all members not to give up on their goals. If you experience a road block, go around it. Don t stop keep going. As your Regional Communications Director, I pledge to help you learn about the advantages that come with your membership and to support you as you try to make your membership meaningful (both for today and for your future).
