Help Needed for Senior Project and MYP Personal Project This year we have two opportunities for community members to help our high school students - Senior Project and MYP Personal Project:

4 Senior project continues as an enriching experience for our high school seniors! This year's senior project runs May The requirement remains that each student is to have 100 project hours for the month (study hours for AP tests, varsity sports time, and other school activities count toward that total). The sponsor does not need to see the student every day and there is flexibility in how the project is set up. Click here for information on the Senior Project. If you would like to sponsor a student for senior project, please complete the Sponsor Contact form or contact Irene Meyerhoefer. Questions?Contact us by . MYP Personal Project is new with the Shaker School District becoming certified as IB in the Middle Years Program (grades 5-10). Students are encouraged to explore a topic of personal interest through long term goal setting with targeted faculty coaching. Like Senior Project, the MYP Personal Project may result in a student asking for a community-based mentor with specific knowledge or skills - this is where we need your help! Many students are interested in experiences outside of the high school and in our surrounding communities. So we're looking for willing mentors who are interested in engaging with students. The depth of the relationship is up to the student and mentor, but most interactions take the form of interviews, shadowing experiences, volunteering or additional guidance on topical research. Click here for additional information on the MYP Project. If you have questions or would like to assist with MYP personal projects please contact us by . Order Your Yearbook Now! Yearbooks are now available to be purchased for $50 until October 25. After that date the price increases! They can be purchased at the high school in the main office, or by clicking here. 6 SHHS Athletics News Raider Field Hockey The Raider field hockey team defeated Magnificat 2-1 on Wednesday. Goals were scored by Katie Muller-Girard and Haley Brady. The JV team tied Magnificat with a score of 0-0. SHHS Swim Team Attention anyone interested in joining the Shaker Heights High School Swim Team. The high school swim team will be offering "Open Pool" sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons beginning Tuesday, October 6 at 3:45-4:45 pm at the Woodbury pool. These one hour sessions are instructional based sessions for those swimmers who are NOT involved in a fall sport and/or NOT already involved with a club for the pre-season. A high school coach will be on hand to introduce and review strokes and drills to help prepare swimmers to be ready for the Shaker Heights high school swim team. Swimmers should plan to arrive approximately 10 minutes before the scheduled start time and bring a swim suit, towel, and goggles to each session. If you have questions please contact Head Coach Eric Peterson by phone at or by . Shaker Hockey Adapted Ice Breaker Event The SHHS hockey team and the Shaker Youth Hockey Association are partnering with Youth Challenge to host an Adapted Ice Breaker event on Friday, Oct. 16 from 6:30-9 pm. Come test your skills against our hockey players, cheer on your team in a sled hockey game, free skate, and more. Click here for more information. Shaker Crew Shaker Crew Boys & Girls Teams split up this weekend with the Boys competing at a local scrimmage here at home and the Girls competing at the Head of the Ohio in Pittsburgh. The Boys faced sub-optimal conditions as the weather was cold & wet. However, they placed 2nd or 3rd in almost all events against St. Edwards and visiting crews from Ann Arbor Huron and Ann Arbor Pioneer. The Girls raced on the mighty Allegheny in Pittsburgh on Sunday and brought home the following medals: Women's Youth 2x: Margo Burnard & Eliza La

7 Rue, silver; Women's 2nd / JV 8+: Sarah Spielman, Sydney Gang, Genny Fortin, Olivia Whittier, Sophie Calabrese, Anna Sternberg, Claire Connors, Anabel McGuan, and cox Hannah Barrett, bronze; Women's Youth 2-: Lily Schulte-Lawrence & Megan Hofstetter, bronze; Women's Youth 4+: Sydney Gang, Genny Fortin, Olivia Whittier, Anabel McGuan, and cox Hannah Barrett, silver. Special Congratulations go out to Senior Helen Yusko for being one of fifty-four student athletes to earn a spot on the USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll. Way to go Helen! School District News Community/Alumni Band Day on October 17 Come join the SHHS marching band for the 19th Annual Community/Alumni Band event during the halftime show of the Homecoming football game on Saturday, October 17! This is your chance to perform with Ohio's largest marching band. So, get out that old instrument! Whether you're an area music teacher, or haven't played your horn in thirty years, you are welcome to participate. Click here for a flyer with more details. Tour Your Schools Day on October 12 Come visit the Shaker Schools on Monday, October 12. All members of the community are invited to drop in at any of the eight schools. No appointment is necessary. Tours will be offered from 9:30 am to noon and from 1 to 2:30 pm at all five of the K-4 buildings, Woodbury School, and Shaker Heights Middle School. Shaker Heights High School Principal James Reed III will be speaking with visitors at 10 am and 1 pm followed immediately by tours of the High School. Tour Your Schools Day is a great opportunity for parents to visit their children's current classrooms or visit the schools their children will be attending in future years. It's also an invitation to all community members to see what is happening in our classrooms. Don't Be Left Out of the Shaker Schools Family Directory! In the Shaker Schools, we build community by connecting our families with a district-wide directory. Our goal is 100%

8 participation from Shaker families. The Shaker School Family Directory is convenient and user-friendly, accessible either online or as a smartphone app. Shaker families maintain their own directory information.it's easy to sign up and takes only a few minutes. Click here and then select "Join as a new family." Questions? Contact us by . All Parent Volunteers Need Background Checks Anyone who chaperones a field trip, or volunteers with students in any capacity, or is in any of the Shaker school buildings is required to have their fingerprints taken for background checks with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and the FBI. The Shaker School District absorbs the cost for these background checks for volunteers so there is no charge to parents. The process usually takes only about five minutes. However, the results of the fingerprinting may come back as quickly as 2 hours or as long as 30 days, so volunteers need to plan ahead if they want to be with the children for any specific time or field trip. Please call Human Resources to schedule an appointment TED-style Presentations Focus on Struggles and Triumphs of Minority Communities in Cleveland The Shaker Heights School District and the Anti-Defamation League are partnering for a TED-style event (short-form conference presentations that bring people together to share compelling stories that encourage new and different ways of thinking). The evening will feature speakers from many different minority communities in Cleveland and will conclude with small group discussions. Shaker Heights High School teacher Mario Clopton and Shaker Heights High School senior Amani Hill will be two of the presenters. Join us on Thursday, October 22 from 7 to 8:30 pm in the Shaker Heights High School Small Auditorium. RSVP by to Emily Muskin. Meet Shaker Schools Educational Visioning Consultant on October 12 Preliminary results of the community facilities survey will be discussed at two community meetings on Monday, October 12, at the Middle School Auditorium. The first meeting will take place from 4-6 pm. The second meeting will take place from 7-9 pm. The City of Shaker Heights and the School District look forward to resident participation in this important community discussion of how our schools can best meet the educational needs of the 21st century student.
