4 From the Venerable Master Lodge of Perfection The age old poem says April showers bring May flowers. The West Coast, especially California, has received very little rain and/or snow. We are parched, dry, and turning dusty. Just like we must save nature and conserve water, so must we cultivate and nurture candidates into Blue Lodge and eventually into Scottish Rite and Shrine. Yosemite Lodge No. 99 in Merced has a bumper crop of applicants for Masonry. Other lodges in this valley must be doing something as well, since we have 14 candidates for our Spring Class. Join your Masonic brothers in putting on the Scottish Rite degrees on May 1 and 2 and May 8 and 9. We will be busy. If you have experience or not come out and participate. Call the Director General, Mike Nella. There are things to do and help with in all degrees. The summer is almost here and we will be busy. There is a fishing adventure, a baseball game at the Grizzlies Stadium and then the Dinner Auction. Most of us can find something of interest in one or all of these events. Yes, your Venerable Master and Lady went to Spring Training in Arizona. Yes it was fun. Allergies dried up and went away and gas was a lot cheaper. But we came back. Alas, so did the allergies. Keep the faith, be safe out there! Baseball Season has begun. Ross Simonet, 32 KCCH Venerable Master Lodge of Perfection Page 4
5 From the Wise Master Chapter of Rose Croix Fresno Scottish Rite Brethren, We had the privilege, at our April stated meeting, of giving two of our local recipients of the Foundation s Special Scholarship to Samantha Jones (Rainbow Girl) who will be attending college in San Luis Obispo and Christopher Estrada who will be attending Stanford University. Our CART school recipients of the Fresno Scottish Rite Scholarship will be receiving their awards at the next stated meeting. They are Reina Warnert, Kasani Ligget-Wise (Rainbow Girl), and Christian Camarena; what a wonderful group of young people. Thank you to all that purchased tickets or made donations to the Heart of the Valley Rainbow Girls as they were selling tickets at our last meeting for their Cowboy Breakfast and bake sale on May 3 rd at Las Palmas Masonic Center. It was this kind of fundraiser that raised the $72, by the girls last year. I would like to welcome our new members and their families to Fresno Scottish Rite. The Ring Rose and Cap Ceremony will be May 18 th following our Stated Meeting Dinner, in the Lodge room. I hope we have a large turnout of all of our members to welcome our new members and their families. Richard Vitz, 32 Wise Master Chapter of Rose Croix Page 5
6 From the Master of Kadosh What a beautiful time of year, to have a Spring Reunion. How exciting to have a large Class! The Director General, Degree Directors and all degree cast members are busy getting ready and learning their parts. Sound, Stage and Wardrobe are also getting ready. Hope to see all of you there. August 1st, might seem like a long way off, but it s just a little over three months and it will be time for our Annual Dinner Auction! Everything is in order with Sunnyside Country Club. I am sure that all will have a great time and a good meal at this beautiful location. The Alotus Club of Ft. Millerton Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star will be doing the table decorations this year. It is not to soon to put together a table of eight and make your reservations. Also, please start getting donations for the silent and live auctions to the Scottish Rite office. I am sure it will be a wonderful evening in August. H. Vincent Carter, 32 KCCH Master of Kadosh, Consistory SAVE THE DATE! 4th Annual Celebrating the Craft Web Event Join us on May 16, 2015, for the fourth annual Celebrating the Craft (CTC) web event. 10 Tom s Talks Two of my sons compete in the Ironman Events and have introduced me to the sport of Triathlons. I have been intrigued by the lessons that endurance events and training teach you. Triathlons are endurance events in which you swim, bike and run continuously for a predetermined length; an Ironman event is a 2.4 mile swim, 12 mile bike ride and a 26 mile run. I have done several Olympic length triathlons 1 mile swim, 26 mile bike ride and 6 mile run and hope to do a half Ironman next summer. In the middle of these events and the training you ask a very important question: Why am I doing this? The answer is vitally important. You will hear many tri-athletes simply say Because it is fun and rewarding. Sounds crazy but, it is. Hopefully this is the same answer to why you support the Childhood Language Center. It is fun because of the fellowship, friendship and activities for fundraising, and rewarding because you see children's lives changed. So many of our learning challenged children are like a tri-athlete in that they are endurance students. They work and work at speech, language and learning, as hard as any endurance athlete. That is why it is so important for us to be their cheerleader and playmate. Learning should be fun and rewarding. Encourage a student near you, so that they can have the endurance they need. Your emotional and financial support is vital to their success! Tom Tatum Fresno Clinic Director Page 10
11 KNIGHTS TEMPLAR THE AMERICAN LODGE (continued from April edition) Lodge rooms were decorated in historical motifs to assist Masons in separating themselves from the ordinary world. Revivalist decorations allowed the membership to leave the present and enter a romantic past. Masons of this period proudly proclaimed that Freemasonry had been practiced during all eras of Western civilization. Lodge room ornamentation supported this ideology. The largest temples with multiple rooms decorated like medieval Europe, ancient Egypt and 18 th -century America, expressed materially the temporal transcendence of the fraternity s mythic frame. The membership literally surrounded itself with the message that the brotherhood had existed throughout time and around the globe. Elaborate costumes and makeup added theatrical spectacle to the rituals words. In the 1870s, the ritual usually was performed in the member s business attire augmented by the Masonic aprons, but in the 1890s some lodges used costumes. By the 1920s, scores of firms produced and marketed supplies for enhancing the Blue Lodge degrees. The Pettibone Brothers Manufacturing Company and M. C. Lilley & Company of Ohio, the Ward-Stilson Company of Indiana, and the Henderson-Ames Company of Michigan, were among the largest. Pete Clark, 32, KCCH Page 11
