4 Book discussion groups at The Dalles Library Third Thursday Book Group This group meets on the third Thursday of the month, at 6:30 p.m., upstairs in the magazine corner. The book they are reading for the August 18th discussion is Cane River, by Lalita Tademy. This saga chronicles four generations of women born into slavery along the Cane River in Louisiana. It is also a tale about the blurring of racial boundaries: great-grandmother Elisabeth notices an unmistakable "bleaching of the line" as first her daughter Suzette, then her granddaughter Philomene, and finally her great-granddaughter Emily choose (or are forcibly persuaded) to bear the illegitimate offspring of the area's white French planters. In many cases these children are loved by their fathers, and their paternity is widely acknowledged. However, neither state law nor local custom allows them to inherit wealth or property, a fact that gives Cane River much of its narrative drive. The book for the next discussion will be A long, long way, by Sebastian Barry. Drop-in tech time Mystery/Crime Book Group This group will meet on Thursday, August 25th at 6:30 p.m. upstairs in the magazine corner. They will be discussing The stranger beside me, by Ann Rule. With a slow chill that intensifies with each heart-pounding page, Rule describes her dawning awareness that Ted Bundy, her sensitive coworker on a crisis hotline, was one of the most prolific serial killers in America. He would confess to killing at least thirty-six young women from coast to coast, and was eventually executed for three of those cases. Drop-in tech help is available from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on most Mondays, and 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on most Saturdays. We can help you with your own mobile device, mobile applications, Library2Go, egovernment, filling out forms, using the library catalog and other library resources, printing, and anything else tech! Please check in at the front desk. So you want to learn how to download books or audiobooks from our website, but can t make it during the daytime? Starting Wednesday, August 10th we will have dropin hours for tech help with a focus on showing users how to download books and audiobooks from our website. We will have an ipad on hand to help with teaching and demonstrations. Help will also be available for other tech needs. Our fine, and skilled!, Coloring for adults A coloring night, just for adults, is held the second Tuesday of every month. Join us at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9th and explore your artistic side. We ll having coloring supplies on a table in the main part of the library. Coloring it s not just for kids! 7 V O L U M E 9, I S S U E 0 8 P A G E 7 These events are happening at Southern Wasco County Library 2016 Summer Reading program Library Olympics will be held August 2nd at 6:00 p.m. at Kaiser Park, located in Maupin. This will be held in conjunction with the America's National Night Out Ice Cream Social at the same time. There will be a bounce house, games and relays and prizes. Drawings will be held at the end of the summer for those kids involved in the summer program. We will be giving away 2 Lenovo ThinkPad laptop computers, State Fair tickets and lots more.
8 P A G E 8 Soup library Are you looking for a different place to take your family for dinner on these hot summer nights? Why not bring them to the library for a nice refreshing bowl of cold soup, such as gazpacho, watermelon, or cucumber soups? We ll be sharing a variety of cold soups on Wednesday, August 10 th from 6:00 8:00 at The Dalles Public Library. We were inspired by Maggie Stuckey, a Portland author, who was here in March and introduced the concept of soup night to us. Basically, it is a way to get to know others in your neighborhood, and share a meal with them. If you weren t here for her program, we ll be happy to tell you about soup nights, and how you can bring it to your own neighborhood. There is nothing for you to bring, except your own beverage. We ll supply the soups, bowls, spoons and napkins. When you re done eating, instead of having to clean-up, you can spend time with your family in the library selecting books, movies, and more. If you have any questions, or would like to volunteer to help out with Soup Night, contact Rita at , or via at rsquires@ci.the-dalles.or.us. TedTalk discussion group Like a book club without the book. This discussion group; held the first Thursday of every month, at 7:00 p.m. in the library s meeting room, is open to adults and youth (age 14+). The TedTalk for August 4th will be: David Epstein: Are athletes really getting faster, better stronger? When you look at sporting achievements over the last decades, it seems like humans have gotten faster, better and stronger in nearly every way. Yet as David Epstein points out in this delightfully counterintuitive talk, we might want to lay off the self-congratulation. Many factors are at play in shattering athletic records, and the development of our natural talents is just one of them. Get ready for the Olympics by joining in this fascinating and fun topic. For more information, or to be on the list for this event, please contact Jenny Loughmiller at: jtloughmiller@gmail.com, or call/text at Ted Talks are short (20 minutes or less), high -quality video presentations given by passionate, knowledgeable people across a wide variety of fields. They contain big ideas that can inform, challenge and inspire all at the same time. Upcoming computer classes There are no computer classes scheduled for August, but just look at what s going to be available this fall: Basic How to Use a Computer, , Beginning Word, Internet Searching Skills, Computer Privacy and Security, Excel, PowerPoint, Web Design, Library Resources or What Magical Tools We Have on Our Website (includes ebooks and downloadable audio). Is there something you would like to learn that isn t listed? Just let us know, and we ll see if we can help. Bye bye Boopsie If you are one of the small handful of patrons who had been using the Boopsie app, we no longer subscribe to that service. You will find that our website is responsive, and will resize to fit the electronic device it is on. Just bookmark our website to help you find it quickly.
