This year there were 325 guests attending with half of those being area community business leaders and mentors. The students annually show appreciation for their work experience opportunities by inviting, as their guests, their supervisors and business partners to a luncheon where the interns act as hosts for the event. The hall was filled with interns from all walks of the professional arenas. The medical field was strongly represented this year with not only area medical and dental offices being represented, but also by William Beaumont Hospital where 25 UCS interns have spent their school year working in a variety of departments. Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontic of Michigan, Dr. Delaney s office (Clinton Township), was recognized as our longest serving co-op partner with over 30 years of mentorship; while Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics, Dr. Tracht and Dr. Briskie (Rochester Hills) was also recognized for their long standing support with 29 years of service to the UCS co-op program. Many
4 others had years of sponsorship which means 100s of interns that have been trained and mentored by these companies over the years. Our business department was also well recognized by our many mentors: business, accounting, marketing and merchanting interns. Having the opportunity over the years to work with a local transit company, Central Transport, topped the business intern category with 13 interns from UCS currently employed and working 20 hour a week shifts, Monday- Fridays of each week. Our Engineering Interns and other CTE skilled trade areas were also present and well represented with Diamond Granite and Tile being a sponsor for over 25 years; with multiple interns working each year at their showroom and prep center. Along with our long -term repeat employers were many first-time employers in all disciplines. We welcome all area businesses into our co-op family and hope to have a long and successful relationship with each organization. It is the belief of the STW program that the future of our work force starts with experience and wise choices made at an early age. With the opportunities that this program can offer students to experience a real world setting in their area of career interest, we feel they are a step ahead on their career path. This year four scholarships were awarded at the banquet to outstanding interns with a strong community service background. These awards were made possible by the Sterling Heights High Noon Kiwanis Club (2@ $1000) and the Sterling Heights Kiwanis Club (2@$1500). Of the four scholarships awarded, two were given to Stevenson interns. Bhumi Patel was recognized for her service with a $1500 award; and Daniel Zelenack was recognized for his commit to service with a $1000 award. We were very proud of our Titan winners. The STW Program is now accepting applications for next year s placements. If you have an interested student who is interested in experiencing a professional setting prior to graduation from high school, the STW program is a great place to start. You can obtain an application in the counseling office or by stopping by the co-op office located in the main office area and picking up an application. Placements for next year will begin by the end of May and will continue through the fall of next year until all jobs are filled. For more information you can contact : Cheryl.adams@uticak12.org or by calling and leaving a message. Congratulations School-to-Work (Co-Op) Scholarship Winners Kiwanis honored two Stevenson Co-Op students for being excellent students and giving back to the community through service. Congratulations Bhumi Patel for her $1500 scholarship from Kiwanis and Daniel Zelenack for his $1000 scholarship from Sterling Heights High Noon Kiwanis Club.
