President s Corner: CoA President s Roundtable The College of Alameda President s Roundtable recently met on November 1, The meeting was well attended by community leaders interested in supporting the College and our students. Attendees included: Superintendent of Alameda Unified School District Sean McPhetridge; Alameda Chamber of Commerce President Michael McDonough; Supervisor s Assistant for Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan Sarah Oddie; City of Alameda Community Development Director Debbie Potter; Retired City of Alameda Chief Financial Officer Juelle Ann Boyer; Alameda Unified School District CTE Pathway Specialist Felicia Vargas; Alameda Community Fund President Edward Kofman; and Alameda Rotary President Elect Karen Kenney. College of Alameda staff members also attended, including Vice President of Instruction Tim Karas, Vice President of Student Services Tina Vasconcellos, Director of Business Services Mary Beth Benvenutti, and PIO Consultant Cathy Summa-Wolfe. At the meeting, members reported on and celebrated the recent success of the Alameda Chamber of Commerce. The Business Expo held on the College of Alameda campus in October was a project of the President s Roundtable. Over 200 people attended the event. Future plans tentatively include holding the Business Expo annually on the second Tuesday of September and adding College of Alameda career training workshops to the program. Page 1!

2 In addition, the group discussed planning a Spring 2017 event at the College campus featuring thought leaders who will lead problem-solving discussions around key community issues such as transit, aging, health, workforce development, and education, among others. Planning for the event will continue in early spring 2017, when the new CoA President is in place. The meeting ended with a discussion of how the Alameda Promise might benefit from Roundtable activities. Superintendent McPhetridge recommended incorporating the Alameda Promise into the spring event, and others suggested possibly adding a fundraising component that would benefit our Alameda Promise students. I want to thank all who attended the meeting for their continuing support of the College. Dr. Frances L. White, Interim President, College of Alameda CoA Student Leaders Connect with Silicon Valley Industry A select group of Alameda College students confirmed they have what it takes to be leaders in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers during a special invitation-only conference. The 13th Annual Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Student Leadership Conference, themed The New Face of STEM, was held October at the Santa Clara Marriott. Students engaged in a number of creative activities designed to sharpen their professional skills. They competed in an elevator pitch challenge, styled after the hit show The Voice. Audience members voted by live polling during this PG&E hosted competition. SoCalGas led a teambuilding Lego Challenge. And a networking social event included improv games geared toward enhancing social and emotional skills. CoA MESA students Students also participated in mock interviews, connected with industry representatives, heard guest speakers, and attended workshops. This focus on so-called soft skills is a key to shaping well-rounded STEM professionals. The event was fully sponsored by industry donations. Pacific Gas and Electric, Southern California Gas Company, Edison International, and San Diego Gas & Electric were the top sponsors with additional funding from CHC Page 2!

3 Consulting, Intel, Applied Materials and Jabil. Other partners included NASA, Tesla, and AT&T. The Alameda College conference attendees were sponsored by PG&E. NASA astronaut Commander Victor Glover was named the 2016 MESA Distinguished Alum. He participated in MESA while in middle school and as an undergraduate. Command Glover credits the program a driving force behind his success as an engineer. He encouraged students to stay committed to STEM education. Students attended from the following campuses: CSU Chico, CSU Fresno, CSU Long Beach, CSU Los Angeles, CSU Sacramento, San Diego State University, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, CSU Sonoma, UC Berkeley, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, University of the Pacific, American River College (Sacramento), Butte College (Oroville), Cañada College (Redwood City), Chabot College (Hayward), City College of San Francisco, College of Alameda, College of the Canyons (Santa Clarita), College of the Sequoias (Visalia), Cosumnes River College (Sacramento), Diablo Valley College (Pleasant Hill), Gavilan College (Gilroy), Los Medanos College (Pittsburg), Mission College (Santa Clara), Napa Valley College, Sacramento City College, San Joaquin Delta College (Stockton), Solano Community College (Fairfield), Ventura College, and Yuba College. Article submitted by Statewide MESA Strategic Communications Representative Danielle McNamara Citywide College Night at CoA Was a Great Success! College of Alameda welcomed over 400 guests to the 26th Annual Citywide College Night event on October 25, 2016, in our newly renovated gym. There were 90 colleges with information tables at the event, including many UC s, CSU s, private universities, community colleges, and, of course, CoA. Over 400 prospective students attended and all left with important information and materials needed to help them prepare for college. 4 Outreach Specialist Ashley Flores, the CoA outreach team and the Alameda Unified School Distrtict (AUSD) planning committee worked collaboratively in planning this highly successful event. Many thanks to all who made the event a tremendous success, including Outreach Team members Ashley, Denise Burgara, Martinet Phan, Esther Pillitiere, Dyonis Jauregui, Harin Yoon, and Ilse Gonzalez; and CoA s esteemed Counselors/Faculty members, Vivian Virkkila Felsch, Jackie Vo, and Harizon Odembo who presented information workshops on transfer and financial aid. Set up and clean up would not have been possible without the team effort of Shuntel Nathaniel and the custodial staff. In addition, Shawn Foster, with IT, provided technical support. The Outreach Team reports that they are excited to host such a successful event and are looking forward to more in the future. Well done all and keep up the great work!
