Spring 2016 Dear Graduates: Congratulations! Barring any last-minute complications, the hard work and sacrifice you willingly devoted to your studies over the past several years are about to culminate in the formal conferral of your associate degree or certificate. This will occur at Commencement on Saturday, May 21 st, 2016 when the President of the College will hand you the credential that will confirm your status as a graduate and your freedom to enjoy thereafter all the rights and privileges your degree or certificate brings! This event is important not only to you and your family but also to the entire Lackawanna College community. All its members look forward to celebrating with you not just Graduation Day itself but each of the preliminary functions highlighting extracurricular achievements. If, for instance, you have qualified for membership in Phi Theta Kappa, have earned academic awards, participated in clubs and activities, you will certainly wish to take part in the Honors Convocation on May 1 st. Likewise, if you are a student athlete, you will be sure to attend the Athletic Banquet on May 4 th and receive recognition for your participation in the sports program. Commencement starts the morning of May 21 st, and the complete schedule of events and details can be found throughout this booklet. Even though you will no longer attend classes after graduation, you will still maintain your ties to Lackawanna College. As a member of the Alumni Association, you can take part in numerous social functions. If you decide to continue your education as a baccalaureate candidate, you can assist our faculty and administration by keeping us apprised of your progress and offering insights on where or how we can do better. And, of course, as you advance in your profession, you should not hesitate to inform us of promotions, transfers, additional degrees or certifications, and other recognitions. Your success is important to us! Occasionally, you may receive surveys from our office asking you about your experiences since graduating from Lackawanna College. Your carefully considered responses are vital in providing us with accurate data for use in our efforts to constantly improve as an institution. We thank you in advance! You have been, are, and will always remain important to us. For your family, friends, colleagues, and clients, Lackawanna College is identified with you. You are, in essence, our best advertisement. We take pride in all you have done and all you will do. Best wishes, Lackawanna College 2016 Graduation Committee 3

Applying for Graduation Important Information For All Graduation Candidates If you have received this graduation information booklet, it is likely that your application for graduation is already on file with the Registrar s Office. However, if you have not already submitted your application, contact the Registrar s Office immediately. Application for graduation is only the beginning in a number of processes leading to Commencement. Candidates for graduation who learn there is a problem with fulfillment of their graduation requirements must contact the Registrar s Office as soon as possible at (570) to discuss options. In Absentia Graduates If you are not planning to attend the Commencement Ceremony, you must write a letter or the Office of Academic Affairs (gallagherm@lackawanna.edu) requesting permission to graduate in absentia. Please contact Mary Clare Gallagher at (570) for more information. Angeli Hall Many of our graduation events take place in and around Angeli Hall, which is located at 501 Vine Street in Scranton. Within the building, one can find the follow locations: The Theater of Lackawanna College Ground Floor The Boardroom Second Floor (front of the building) The Reception Hall Third Floor (back of the building) Commencement Attire Each graduation candidate will receive a commencement packet that includes his/her commencement attire, including a robe with cap and tassel, which is required without exception. There is no cost for your graduation attire. Please remember that commencement is a formal academic event and attire under your robe should be appropriate. Please wear shoes that will enable you to navigate steps and the stage safely and comfortably. You may wish to use hairpins to secure your cap. Plan to leave any personal items with your guests, as there is no secure storage area. Commencement Ticket Information No tickets are required for admission to the Commencement Ceremony. Graduates are welcome to invite as many family members and friends who would like to attend! Student Accounts All account balances, including the Late Graduation Application processing fee (if applicable), must be settled prior to graduation in order to participate in the commencement ceremony. Please contact the Bursar s Office at (570) with any questions. 5

Financial Aid Financial resources that you borrow for higher education are often the key to a successful future, but managing your subsequent debt is also a serious obligation with specific responsibilities. It is important to remember that loans must be repaid. By handling your loan responsibilities correctly, you will build and maintain good credit. Before you graduate, regulations require that you attend an exit interview so that the Office of Financial Aid can explain your responsibilities. If you have not already done so, please contact the Office of Financial Aid at (570) If you plan to transfer between schools, and you maintain continuous enrollment, your loans can be deferred. Visit the Financial Aid Office of the college you will be attending for help. As you graduate, give yourself a big pat on the back; you ve made it! And as you step out, remember that the secret to handling college loans is the same as it is for getting through finals: prepare, and do your homework well in advance! Pre-Commencement Events in Detail Honors Convocation Rehearsal: Friday, April 29 at 1 p.m. A mandatory rehearsal for the Honors Convocation/Phi Theta Kappa Induction ceremony will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Theater. Graduates will meet in the Theater at Lackawanna College at 12:45 p.m. A photo of all Phi Theta Kappa inductees will be taken immediately following the rehearsal. All PTK inductees should dress appropriately. Honors Convocation Ceremony: Sunday, May 1 at 2 p.m. The Lackawanna College community takes pride in the outstanding achievement students have manifested during their years of study at the College. Honors Convocation brings together a number of students who have earned recognition in various forms for exceptional academic performance or extracurricular activity and is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in the Theater (scholarship and award photos will begin at 2 p.m. in the Boardroom). In the course of the program, President Mark Volk will commend students who have merited scholarships and student service awards, and an induction ceremony for new members of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and the International Honor Society of the Two-Year College will be conducted. A reception follows in the Reception Hall for those who have made reservations. Formal invitations for Honors Convocation detailing the reservation process will be sent to invited students. For specific information about Phi Theta Kappa, please contact Katherine Fisne, PTK advisor, at (570) or fisnek@lackawanna.edu. These banquets pay tribute to all Lackawanna College athletes for their outstanding achievements as student-athletes and are enjoyable evenings for parents and guests who acknowledge the athletes many accomplishments. Coaches pay tribute to their team members by presenting awards for Most Valuable Player in each sport as well as announcing scholarships for academic and athletic excellence. Invitations for the athletic banquets detailing the reservation process will be sent to athletes by the Athletic Department. It is very important that all graduates attend rehearsal so they understand the proper flow of events to 7

alleviate any added stress and ensure Commencement runs smoothly and is a time of celebration! If you have any questions, please contact Mary Ann Oliveri at (570) or oliverim@lackawanna.edu or Mary Clare Gallagher at (570) or gallagherm@lackawanna.edu. Commencement Day Saturday, May 21 st, 2016 IMPORTANT NOTE: Scranton Armed Forces Day Parade On the morning of May 21 st, Scranton s veterans organizations are sponsoring their annual Armed Forces Day Parade from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Although the parade route does not directly intersect the streets near the College, graduates, their families, and friends (particularly those attending the Graduation Breakfast) may encounter police blockades as they approach Angeli Hall. We strongly advise all to allow extra time for their trips into the city just in case they must use alternate routes. Graduation Breakfast: 11 a.m. Members of the Class of 2016 are invited to attend our annual Graduation Breakfast on the morning of graduation. The breakfast is held in the Reception Hall at 11 a.m. All graduates are invited to attend the breakfast at no cost but must reserve tickets in advance because seating is limited. Family and friends may purchase tickets in advance for an additional cost. As you may have seen, a separate letter with specific breakfast information and a ticket reservation form is located inside the front cover of this booklet. If you would like more information, please contact Lynn Mikelatis at (570) or mikelatisl@lackawanna.edu. Class of 2016 Photo: 12 p.m. All members of the Class of 2016 are invited to take part in the annual class photo, which is taken on the steps of the Children s Library, across the street from Angeli Hall, at 12:15 p.m. on Commencement Day. This photograph is a wonderful keepsake, and we encourage all members of the graduating class to take part. Please make every effort to be included by reporting to the Children s Library (in your cap and gown) no later than 12 p.m. All graduates will receive a copy of the class photo at no charge, and photographs will be mailed during the summer. Commencement Ceremony: 1 p.m. Graduates will begin lining up for the Academic Procession at 1 p.m. in the Theater, and the Academic Procession to the Student Union will begin promptly at 1:15 p.m. REMINDER: If you are not planning to attend the Commencement Ceremony, you must or submit a letter stating this intention to the Office of Academic Affairs. Information regarding graduating in absentia can be found on page 7. 8

After the procession and once everyone is seated, introductory remarks, the invocation, the National Anthem, welcome remarks, presentations, and various speeches follow. The presentation of diplomas takes place near the end of the ceremony after degrees are officially conferred. The Academic Deans will announce graduation candidates in alphabetical order by major. Be sure that you are in proper order according to the marching list that will be made available to you, and follow the directions of the faculty marshals as you approach the stage. As you proceed across the stage, you will receive a diploma cover containing a welcome announcement from the Lackawanna College Alumni Association. After all graduates have received diplomas, the alumni message and benediction will be given. When the ceremony concludes, the organist will begin to play the recessional, and the stage party, faculty, administration, and graduates will exit the gymnasium and continue downstairs to the Student Union Lounge, where they will join their families and friends for a reception given by the Alumni Association. 14 Graduation Announcements to Newspapers Dear Members of the Class of 2016: Congratulations on your upcoming graduation from Lackawanna College. Your hard work and commitment to learning make your degree a well-earned reward. We would like to explain how Lackawanna College s Office of External Relations will handle graduation announcements in local newspapers. Our goal is to help you receive the recognition you deserve, whether you live in Northeastern Pennsylvania or reside in another state. On the day of Commencement, a description of the event and the names and hometowns of all of the graduates will be distributed to the daily newspapers in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties. They normally carry the story with the names of the graduates within their circulation area. For graduates of our satellite centers (Hazleton, Lake Region, The School of PNG, and Towanda), we forward the story and names to the Directors of the Centers who adapt this information for local distribution. Unfortunately, due to space restrictions, they often omit the names of graduates from areas outside their circulation or those out of state. All newspapers are interested in publishing stories that reflect accomplishments of local residents. We encourage you and your family to contact your local newspapers and provide them with information about your graduation. Usually, they welcome information and listings of local graduates from area colleges and universities. Often, particularly in smaller communities, they will do a feature story. We have provided you with a sample news announcement on the following page. You can use this as a guideline for submitting the announcement to your local media. You can add interesting notes and accomplishments, but be advised that your submission may be edited for content and space. Before you submit, we recommend that you contact the paper to find out the contact name and preferred method of submission ( , Word document, etc.). An appropriate contact will also improve your chances for publication. For example, if you had an outstanding athletic career during high school, you may consider sending your information to the sports editor, especially if you continued participation at the collegiate level. If you have any questions, please call (570) Best wishes for your graduation and future. We hope you will always remain close to Lackawanna College. Sincerely, Wendy P. Hinton Director of External Relations Brian Costanzo Vice President for College Advancement 14
