Mrs. Chancellor reminds family members they are invited on the field to take pictures after the graduates have been formally dismissed. Because of the artificial turf on the football field, shoes must have a wedge, flat bottoms, or heels at least the size of a quarter. Designated seating and parking for individuals with disabilities will be available by calling in advance. Seating will be limited to the individual(s) and one guest. A BHS parking permit will be required to enter the reserved parking. 4 Bike to School Day held at Central Special to The Bruin Neither rain nor clouds deterred bicyclists who were determined to participate in the second year of SRTS (Safe Routes to Schools) Bike to School Day. Thirty Central Middle School students rode bikes from their homes or these elementary schools: Jane Phillips, Wayside, Kane, Oak Park, or the Bartlesville High School individually or as part of a bike train on May 8. Several new bike racks were purchased as part of a Fuel Up to Play 60 grant awarded to Central Middle School for the school year encouraging students to make healthier food choices and encourage daily physical activity. Computer Science Teacher at Central, Tom Rovenstine, coordinated the event with students completing a form indicating they wanted to participate. Two free bikes were shown to the student body at an assembly before the event to entice participation. Two other essential pieces required to be eligible for the bikes was to wear a helmet and actually ride a bike on the day of the event. Adult volunteers who were part of the bike train included Roxanne Boyce, Mark and Michele Robertson, Andrea Satterfield, Ginger Mc- Cullough, Larry Eide and Tom Rovenstine. Each adult led a Photo Special to The Bruin/Zach Robertson and his parents braved the rain to participate in Bike to School Day on Wednesday. group a students in front and behind the train. The free bikes will be given at a raffle in the next few weeks. Walking and bicycling to school enables students to incorporate the regular physical activity they need each day while also forming healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Regular physical activity helps youth build strong bones, muscles and joints, and it decreases the risk of obesity. In contrast, insufficient physical activity can contribute to chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and stroke. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that children and adolescents get one hour or more of physical activity each day. Research suggests that physically active kids are more likely to become healthy, physically active adults, underscoring the importance of regular physical activity early. For information about getting a biking program started at your school or for more information about Fuel Up to Play 60, contact Gale Mills, Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Sciences, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, Washington County by phone at or by at gale.mills@ okstate.edu. BPSD hosts Community Partnership Luncheon Wednesday, May 8, provided an opportunity for the Bartlesville Public School District to honor many of the great organizations that to do so much for the safety and well-being of BPSD students. The Community Partnership Luncheon, held annually at the Will Rogers Complex, brought organizations together from throughout the community including emergency agencies, the City of Bartlesville, mental health groups, non-profits and many other groups. Lunch was served and door prizes were awarded. Frank and Lolas and the Bartlesville Community Center provided prizes and McAllister s provided free beverages.

7 BMHS receives OETT grant for new technology upgrades Special to The Bruin Students in 18 Oklahoma public schools will soon experience learning in new and innovative ways thanks to $40,000 in grants to purchase new technology equipment and professional development for teachers valued at $25,000 from the Oklahoma Educational Technology Trust. Each school will use the funds to purchase items such as ipads, interactive whiteboards, laptops and digital cameras. Teachers will also receive professional development opportunities to learn how to operate and use the technology to enhance learning. The 18 schools receiving grants are: Bartlesville Mid-High School Boise City Public Schools Bristow High School Central High Public School I-034 Chandler East Side Elementary Fort Gibson Intermediate Elementary Frederick High School Idabel Primary South Elementary School Kingfisher Middle School Mangum Edison Elementary Mid-Del Highland Park Mustang Valley Elementary Harding Fine Arts Academy Salina Middle School Stillwater Middle School Yarbrough Public Schools Yukon Lakeview Elementary Yukon Skyview Elementary School Through the OETT grants, we are focused on creating long term change in our schools, said Dr. Jeff Mills, OETT Board of Trustee Chair. Our goal is to improve overall student achievement and learning through the use of technology. Since 2003, 188 Oklahoma schools across our state stretching from Texas County to McCurtain County have received the OETT grants. In addition, more than 6,500 teachers, principals, and superintendents have received professional development training to assist their students with the new technology. OETT was established in 2001 as a result of an agreement between then Attorney General, Drew Edmondson, and AT&T Oklahoma, relating to the company s transition to a modernized form of regulation. As part of the agreement, AT&T contributed $30 million to OETT. The Trust has distributed almost $15 million to date. OETT is administered by Communities Foundation of Oklahoma and the professional development is coordinated through the University of Oklahoma s K20 Center. For additional information on OETT, visit Miller elected FCCLA District Officer Photo Special to The Bruin/Central Middle School student, Natalie Miller, was elected as Family, Career and Community Leaders of America District Officer on April 30. Miller ran against 13 other candidates from the FCCLA district, only one of which was a middle school student. Miller holds the honor of being the first FCCLA District Officer in recent history representing the Bartlesville Public School District. She will attend officer training this summer and be inducted to her post at a ceremony at the start of next school year. Miller is pictured left.

9 Madison NJHS Breakfast Special to The Bruin/Madison Middle School National Junior Honor Society members honored outgoing eighth grade NJHS students by holding a breakfast. With the school year coming to a close, the seventh grade NJHS students took time to honor the great work of the eighth graders and wish them well as they move to Mid-High next year. GRANT- Continued from page 1 As they sorted through the applications, one stood out, from Wilson Elementary School and Principal Tammie Krause. Krause was submitting her application on behalf of Wilson to help improve the daily Rise and Shine Assembly. She stated the need for a new sound system, curtains for the stage and other technology to aid with the assembly. The Rise and Shine Assembly is a special event held to start each day, and the better equipment would only improve the already outstanding morning assembly. Wednesday morning, Wilson got that chance to improve their Rise and Shine Assembly as members of the BPSF and 66 FCU presented the grant check for $10,000. On hand to present the check from the BPSF was Jody Burch, Cheryl Cowles, Charlie Daniels, Lisa Kenney and Nancy Megee. Sara Freeman represented 66 FCU. Wilson will benefit for years to come from the outstanding grant contribution. The Rise and Shine Assembly is a site to see each morning at Wilson and the assembly got even better with the generous contributions of the BPSF and 66 FCU. OLYMPICS- Continued from page 1 Quinn.
