Yes, you can study and checkout books at the library, but you can also checkout popular movies, download ebooks and audiobooks to your mobile devices, and even learn a language. Presented by The Career Development Center staff. CareerConnect is an online system that students may begin using their first semester at UIS. Students may use CareerConnect to find jobs and internships, schedule career counseling appointments, access exclusive online career resources, register for career preparation events and much more! By attending this session, you will learn about the login process, creating your profile, as well as all of the features that will give insight in securing your first professional job at graduation. Critical Reading and Writing. Presented by Dr. Stephanie Hedge, Director of Composition, Assistant Professor of English. This session will introduce you to the theory and practice of rhetoric, or strategic language use. Being able to think critically about your own language and the language of those around you is essential not just to life as a successful college student, but to your vocational success beyond college and, importantly, to your life as an engaged citizen in the world. When you leave this session, you should have a sense of the ways rhetoric and strategic language use are tied to notions of truth and power, and how you as a college student will learn to be adept at using rhetoric. CSI Assessment. Facilitated by Undergraduate Education and Testing Services. The UIS Office of Undergraduate Education wants to help you succeed in achieving your academic goals. In order to do this, we are using a survey called the College Student Inventory (CSI). The CSI is a tool that will help us collect information from you about attributes that affect your academic success. The responses you provide in the survey will help us provide better services to you and keep you on track for a successful semester. After taking the CSI you will receive an individualized report based on your responses and your academic advisor will discuss your results with you. Elements of Presented by Dr. Tarah Sweeting Trotter, Sr. Director of Advising and Learning Support Services. Many faculty members use class discussion as a method of teaching and learning. Students will learn about faculty expectations for demonstrating what has been learned from the reading, class, and student comments. Students will also learn about what makes a good class discussion. Presented by Dr. Layne Morsch, Associate Professor and Chair, Chemistry and UIS Excellence in Teaching and Learning Fellows, will discuss how to encourage academic growth and focus on valuable practices that lead to student success. These will be important tools as you transition to the different demands of college courses. This will also be helpful for you to know to overcome common academic setbacks. : Cultivating an Inclusive Community. Facilitated by: Dr. Clarice Ford, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs; Justin Rose, Program/Student Advisor, Diversity Center; and Kerry Poynter, Director of the LGBTQA Resource Office. In a unique and powerful way, participants will experience the impact of stereotypical comments, explore why people do not speak up against stereotypes and other biased behaviors, and learn six techniques for speaking up without blame or guilt. This session builds from the Living & Learning in Our Community session from Kick Start. Protecting Yourself and Others: Student Rights, Responsibilities, Campus Safety and Title IX. (Federally/UofI Mandated Session for All First-Years). Presented by Jantzen Eddington, Interim Dean of Students and Deanie Brown In addition to academic ability, being successful on campus also depends upon our ability to stay safe as well as gaining an understanding and awareness of certain key policies, procedures, and services.
