1 THE FRATERNALIZER June 2008 Return of The Fraternalizer Allen Stone As my time here at Michigan Delta comes to an end, I find myself concerned with what life as an alumnus holds in store for me. Feeling the anxiety of separation from the place I ve called home for the past five years and the desire to continue to help contribute, along with an ever present need for the chapter to reconnect with members past, I realized the need to bring back our Alumni Newsletter. This will be the first issue of what is to become a quarterly newsletter sent out at the end of each school term. Here you will find information about the house, its members, and the events of the term. The newsletter along with the new external website and GIN system (see article on page 2) are a part of a plan to help reacquaint alumni with the chapter and the current members. Here you will also find information regarding upcoming Alumni events. President s Address Bart Buesseler President This has been my last term as president and a busy one at that. As a house, I think we have made some positive advances, but there is still much room for improvement. We have spent a lot of time working together as a house to identify and work on our weaknesses in recruitment. This has really become priority #1 for the house, and I feel all of us have taken its importance to heart. This coming fall will be our chance to start walking the walk, and I feel we are ready. Throughout the term, all the officers have also been doing an outstanding job continuing to improve on their respective offices. We ve had mixers with ΑΣΑ, brotherhood bowling, Relay for Life, Mott Park cleanup, works weekends, and an end of term officer retreat. It has truly been an eventful term, but I wouldn t have it any other way. As my time in office is coming to an end, I will be sad to see it go, but I am looking forward to new offices, and helping a new president pick up where I left off. 2 Treasury Department Zach Perry Treasurer The B-Section Treasury department has taken great strides over the past few years. One major change that has been made is that there are now two separate bank accounts (one for A- Section and one for B-Section). These accounts allow each section to control and disperse their funds at their own discretion. We have been able to build a respectable bank account in case any emergencies arise that are not covered by insurance or if critical items need immediate replacement. House bills are currently set at $2000. Each member is in good financial standing with the house and members frequently donate their own money to by odds and ends for the house. For example, we have bought several new yard equipment items. I am proud to announce that the financial situation of the house is slowly but surely becoming stable. GIN System Jimmy Jezewski Technology Chair The Gin System is an online tool that allows current members, Phikeia, and alumni to remain in contact with each other. There are many useful tools built into the website, such as real-time chat, forums, a calendar, and file storage. From the Gin system you will be able to access contact information for current members and other alumni, see chapter announcements, and request information from the chapter, as well as many other things. Currently, A-Section and B-Section have separate sites; however talks of combining the two are underway. If you have any issues using the Gin system or need assistance, you can us at administrators@pdtmideltab. .theginsystem.com T H E L E G E N D O F J O E F O X Back in the early 80 s Kettering (then GMI) began converting the school over to computers. Course information, class schedules, and student's transcripts were just some of the things the new system would handle. This ushered GMI into the new technological era. Already ahead of the school, the house had a computer room setup in the basement. It was here that a few ambitious Phis discovered that they could hack their way into the GMI system. The question was what to do with their new found abilities. Deciding that the world could always use another Phi, the brothers created Joe Fox, the phantom Phi. Joe was given a transcript and a class schedule. Spurred forward by their success, the brothers nominated Joe for student body president and miraculously he made the ballot. Incredibly, after the elections were held it was announced that the new student body president was Joe Fox! However, shortly thereafter when the Phantom Phi could not be located, the brothers had to come clean about their ruse. In honor of Joe Fox and to keep the legend alive, many of us in the house like to use his name for reservations and always enjoy the opportunity to pass on the legend to new members. Please feel free to submit any legends of the past for publication. A-Section B-Section The Fraternalizer 2

Philanthropy Bill Franklin -1133- Historian This past term we have completed a number of philanthropy events to the benefit of the Flint community and also many others.

This year there were over twenty teams and 200 participants at the event. Each team at the event represented a different country. We decided to be the Dutch Cloggers.

Team Phi Delt raised around $650 dollars for the event through donations and selling shish kabobs at our booth.

3 Philanthropy Bill Franklin Historian This past term we have completed a number of philanthropy events to the benefit of the Flint community and also many others. The big event this term was Relay for Life. Relay for Life is a 24 hour walk for cancer sponsored by the American Cancer Society. This year there were over twenty teams and 200 participants at the event. Each team at the event represented a different country. We decided to be the Dutch Cloggers. Opening ceremonies at Relay for Life. We represented the Netherlands as the Dutch Cloggers. Team Phi Delt raised around $650 dollars for the event through donations and selling shish kabobs at our booth. Our Greek chariot that was so popular the year before is currently being rebuilt and scheduled to be finished and ready for rides by next year s event. Along with Relay, members also participated in the annual Mott Park cleanup. Next term we are looking forward to our Annual valet parking event for the World s Greatest Office Party which benefits Whaley s Children s Center. We will also be participating in freshman orientation week and during move-in. We keep trying our best to contribute and give back to the Flint Community. We had brothers walking throughout the day and night during all 24 hours of the event. Brothers Randy Krug and Jordan Kapitanoff preparing to rock climb at Summersville Lake.. Club Activities Eric Mast This year, five brothers from MI Delta went on the Outdoors Club trip to West Virginia over Memorial Day. The stated purpose of the trip is whitewater rafting on the New River, but that's only one day of a four-day weekend. Most of us packed more into our weekend. On Saturday, two of us went scuba diving with the Aquaneers Club in Summersville Lake, a few minutes drive away. On Sunday four of us and one alumnus went climbing along the lake and in the New River Gorge, as well as cliff-diving. The weather was perfect for climbing, but the water was frigid. Finally, on Monday we rafted the New River. Most of the Phis on the trip agreed that we wanted more intensity and adrenaline from rafting. I hear that A- section has organized a trip on the Gauley River in the past, so stay tuned - there may be more to come. The Fraternalizer 3

To complete the officer turnover and for an excuse to spent a day out on the lake, we held an officer retreat at the home of Brother Jimmy Jezewski. Brother Jimmy lives on a private lake, so the rest of the Brothers and I enjoyed a great day waterskiing, wakeboarding, and tubing from the pontoon boat; with an unusually high amount of crashing and splashing coming from the participants. A little fishing was done in a tiny paddleboat as well. And what would a fishing trip be without some big fish that got away stories? There was a monster largemouth bass that I landed, but was unable to get it into the boat due to my own faulty knot. And Brother Joe Jagadics hooked a true monster of a fish, a prehistoric Garpike, with a crazy alligator like mouth. Brothers Mitch Mager , Jordan Kapitanoff , Doug Romain , and Zack Perry gone fishing. Couple this water fun with some amazing food, prepared by Mrs. Jezewski, and all the Brothers had an outstanding time. After our day of fun was over, mostly because no-wake for the lake is 7:30 p.m., we discussed officer turnover and the goals each officer would like to see for the office in the upcoming school year. The event was a great success, and many thanks go out to Brother Jimmy and Mrs. Jezewski. Our annual duck race down the Flint River, which raises money for charity, will take place on August 23 rd. The Alumni Golf Outing will be hosted later in the term on September 13 th.
