2 2018 CHAMPIONSHIPS Penn State edges Ohio State for seventh team title in eight years: It might have been the most exciting 15 seconds in NCAA Wrestling Championship history. Ohio State s Myles Martin, a champion in 2016 with a win over Penn State s Bo Nickal, a freshman at the time, fired a powerful double-leg shot late in the first period of the 184-pound national championship match. Nickal (31-0), a national champion in 2017, flipped Martin to his back with a high-flyer and, with 31 seconds left, scored a monumental pin. The pin put the Nittany Lions up by 12½ points and wrapped up a seventh NCAA team title in eight years. Penn State totaled 141½ points to Ohio State s 134½ points. Three of Nickal s teammates Zain Retherford, Jason Nolf, and Vincenzo Joseph also won individual honors and three others finished among the top eight. Retherford finished his career with 94-straight wins and a third national title, beating Lock Haven s Ronnie Perry, 6-2, in the 149-pound final. The first of five Penn State finalists, Retherford s win cut the Buckeye deficit to two points. A match later, junior Nolf (26-1) cruised by North Carolina State s Hayden Hidlay and the Nittany Lions regained the lead over their Big Ten brethren 132½ to 130½. Iowa finished a distant third with 97 points. Michigan (80) and North Carolina State (80) rounded out the top five. The Penn State train kept rolling when Joseph, just a sophomore, beat Illinois Isaiah Martinez in the 165-pound final for the second consecutive season. Martinez, with just three career losses, was a four-time finalist with titles as a freshman and sophomore. Arizona State sophomore Zahid Valencia (32-0) out-wrestled Penn State s Mark Hall for the 174-pound title and gave Ohio State a fighting chance heading into the 184-pound clash between Nickal and Martin. The three days in Cleveland ended with the highly-anticipated Kyle Snyder-Adam Coon match at 285 pounds. Snyder, an Olympic and world champion, scored a third period takedown that provided the difference in a 3-2 victory. For the first time since 1947 there were two true freshman champions. Iowa s Spencer Lee (22-2) dominated the field at 125 pounds, beating Rutgers Nick Suriano in the final. The Pennsylvania native already owned a Junior World Championship in freestyle before heading to Iowa. Cornell s Yianni Diakomihalis capped a 34-1 rookie campaign with a highlight-reel counter-to-cradle finish in the third period to beat Wyoming senior Bryce Meredith at 141 pounds. Seth Gross became South Dakota State s first NCAA champion in Division I, beating Michigan s Stevan Micic, 13-8, in the 133-pound final. Gross (29-1) lost in the 2017 final. North Carolina State s Michael Macchiavello (22-3) scored a takedown in the final 16 seconds to beat Virginia Tech s Jared Haught for top honors at 197 pounds. When the final session started Ohio State led Penn State 130½ to 124½. The Buckeyes made a run during Saturday s first session, scoring 21 points behind six All-Americans, but Penn State s four champions thwarted the Buckeye s efforts to take the trophy back to Columbus. Ohio State totaled eight All- Americans Championships 2

14 HISTORY NCAA DIVISION I WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS TIMELINE 1928 The first NCAA wrestling tournament was held in Ames, Iowa. No official team scoring was kept but Oklahoma State crowned four individual champions and was later declared the unofficial team champion Oklahoma State s Earl McCready became the NCAA s first threetime national champion, winning the heavyweight class in 1928, 1929 and Indiana s Edwin Belshaw became the first athlete recognized as the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the NCAA championships. Belshaw claimed the 1932 individual national title at 134 pounds Team scoring officially became a permanent feature of the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Led by head coach E.C. Gallagher, Oklahoma State claimed the team title with 29 points, outdistancing runner-up Indiana, which finished with 19 points Oklahoma became the first program other than Oklahoma State to win an official NCAA team title. The Sooners tallied 14 points to stay ahead of Central Oklahoma, which finished with 10 points The NCAA wrestling committee introduced a point system to determine the winner of bouts. Takedowns and reversals were worth two points and an escape one point. Near falls were worth four points. In addition, time advantage points were awarded and penalties were given for stalling The NCAA championships were not held due to the U.S. involvement in World War II Cornell College scored 32 points to become the first and only private school to win an NCAA team title in wrestling William Koll of the University of UNI became the first to win back-toback Division I Most Outstanding Wrestler Awards Behind individual national titles by Bill Nelson, Bill Smith and Keith Young, the University of UNI scored 30 points to win the school s first NCAA wrestling title Oklahoma nipped the University of UNI, 22-21, to win its second straight NCAA wrestling championship In front of a home crowd in University Park, Penn, Penn State captured the NCAA team title, scoring 21 points to derail Oklahoma s hope for a three-peat Team scoring was adjusted to award 7, 5, 3 and 1 point, respectively, for first-, second-, third- and fourth-place finishes. In addition, an advancement point was awarded for championship and consolation bouts Oklahoma s Dan Hodge completed his career as a three-time NCAA champion at 177 pounds. Only he and Earl McCready of Oklahoma State have ever been credited with falls in each of their national championship bouts The NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships were held on the West Coast for the first time as Oregon State played host in Corvallis For the first time, the NCAA split its wrestling tournament into two divisions the College Division and the University Division. The College Division was held one week before the University Division, and schools were allowed to enter both tournaments. Western State won the inaugural College Division title, and Oklahoma took home top honors in the University Division Oklahoma State tallied 81 points to outdistance runner-up Iowa State s 78 points as the Cowboys won their seventh NCAA title in 11 years under the direction of head coach Myron Roderick Iowa State claimed its fourth NCAA title in five years, and the program s fifth overall, behind individual titles by heavyweight Chris Taylor and 177-pounder Rich Binek Iowa claimed its first NCAA championship, toppling defending champion Oklahoma, The team title would prove to be the Hawkeyes first of 20 during the next 26 years Montclair State s Ken Mallory became the first Division III wrestler to win a Division I title by downing Oklahoma s Frank DeAngelis, 10-7, in the 134-pound weight class Unseeded Matt Reiss of North Carolina State completed an improbable journey to the NCAA title at 167 pounds, defeating Iowa State s Perry Hummel, 4-2, to become the Wolfpack s first national title winner Fraternal twin brothers Ed and Lou Banach of Iowa both claimed individual national titles at the NCAA championships as Lou took home the heavyweight title and Ed claimed top honors at 190 pounds Iowa won a record ninth straight NCAA championship, amassing a then-record 158 team points behind five individual national champions Coached by Bobby Douglas, Arizona State scored 93 points to become just the third program outside the states of Iowa or Oklahoma to win an official NCAA wrestling championship Twin brothers Terry and Tom Brands of Iowa both stood atop the awards stand at the 1990 NCAA championships as Terry defeated Jason Kelber of Nebraska, 3-2, to win the 126-pound title and Tom upended Minnesota s Dave Zuniga, 9-7, to take home top honors at 134 pounds Oklahoma State s Pat Smith became the NCAA s first four-time NCAA champion with a victory over Michigan s Sean Bormet at 158 pounds. Smith s other titles in 1990, 1991 and 1992 also came at 158 pounds Iowa established a new NCAA team scoring record, dominating runner-up Oklahoma State, ½, to claim the 1997 team title. The Hawkeyes tallied the impressive total behind five individual titles from Jessie Whitmer, Mark Ironside, Lincoln McIlravy, Joe Williams and Lee Fullhart Central Michigan s Casey Cunningham became the Chippewas first NCAA title winner, edging Penn State s Clint Musser, 2-1, in the 157-pound final With Penn s Brett Matter winning the 157-pound title, he, along with his father, Andy Matter, became the fifth father-son combo to win individual titles at the NCAA championships. Andy took home top honors at 167 pounds for Penn State in 1971 and Iowa State s Cael Sanderson cemented his position as the greatest wrestler in NCAA history, finishing his collegiate career with a fourth straight NCAA title and a perfect record.
