1 March 2017 During the Reformation anniversary year 2017, congregations across the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) are invited to read and study Martin Luther s Small Catechism together. This invitation comes from Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton who offers these words of encouragement: One could argue that no other experience is more universally Lutheran than studying this little book. Studying the Small Catechism together will give us a common language with which to talk about faith, engage Scripture, and makes sense of our lives in the 21 st century. The Small Catechism is not just part of a rite of passage in early adolescence (i.e. Confirmation). It is a treasure for us all today. I encourage you to begin planning today, especially for a congregation-wide engagement with the Small Catechism in the season of Lent in Responding to this invitation, we will engage in a study entitled, With Awe and Love: A Midweek Lenten Series Based on Luther s Small Catechism. Following a simple, soup meal at 6:00 p.m., we will reflect on Luther s Catechism during our study at 6:30 as well as our Evening Prayer at 7:00 p.m. (A small edition of the Small Catechism will be provided for all in attendance.) We will also use one of the five pillars of faith (the Ten Commandments, the Creed, the Lord s Prayer, and the Sacraments of Holy Baptism and Communion) presented in a Question & Answer form as our Order of Confession on Sunday mornings. In addition, the Children s Message throughout Lent will offer further explanation of this resource Luther wrote with the intention it be used by parents for instruction in the home. Whether this is the first or 500 th time you have read and studied Luther s Small Catechism, we hope you will join us as together we share in this anniversary celebration of the Reformation. True to our Lenten focus, it promises to be a time of repentance and renewal. In the words of Martin Luther, This is most certainly true! Blessed Lent, Pastor Hinlicky

4 Music Ministry Marching into Lent One day when I was a substitute teacher in an elementary class, I looked around the room for something new to do with the children and found a songbook with lots of good songs. One, in particular, seemed appropriate since it was either late Feb. or early March and we were all looking forward to Spring. I don t recall much of the song now except that one of the lines went We re gonna march, we re gonna march, we re gonna march, march, march... So, naturally, we also got up and marched around the room as we sang the song. No, I am not suggesting we march around church this month, but there is something to be understood about the solemnity of the season of Lent which we have now entered and the expressions of solemnity that occur on the faces of marching bands, marching troops, even of young children marching around a classroom. Yet, even as we sing our Lenten hymns, often in a somber minor or modal musical key, there is some joy and expectation because we as people, even at a young age, know that spring will come; and because we as Christians know the celebration to come at the end of this season of repentance, that it will again be full of the promise of resurrection, hope, not just new life but life forevermore. Our procession on Palm Sunday is a festive re-enactment of Jesus entry into Jerusalem maybe as raucous as any Fourth of July parade today. But the second procession at the Easter Vigil is even better, full of somber expectation that bursts forth into joyful song as we re-enter the church to see the glory of the Resurrection revealed in light and flowers and banners proclaiming the end of the story. So, even if we do not physically march this March, we are every day moving closer to the greatest celebration of the church year when the solemnity of these grey and somber days bursts forth in the colors and sounds and beauty of Easter. Let us then join in this march, our voices raised on high with the joy and hope we have as Christians. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory! Karen Luther Hymn The Luther hymn for Lent will be O Christ, Lamb of God. Stay tuned for upcoming events in celebration of the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation here, at Roanoke College, around the Valley, around the Synod.

14 Family Promise of Greater Roanoke (initially Roanoke Valley Interfaith Hospitality Network) was established in August of 1997 and took its first family in In its first 15 years, Family Promise of Greater Roanoke helped an estimated 363 families consisting of 573 adults and 656 children. College Lutheran Church was one of the establishing congregations, serving as support to Salem Presbyterian Church. Family Promise is composed of 31 congregations and over 1,000 volunteers who serve to empower families with children who are homeless to achieve sustainable independence through a community based response. In 2010, the Family Promise Day Center moved to the Marshall House at Salem Presbyterian Church. Serving as office and day space, there was no room to provide housing for the guests enrolled in Family Promise. With the approval of Church Council and the congregation, College Lutheran Church became a host church (meaning that Sunday School classrooms are transformed into guest bedrooms) for a week at a time. Beds, linens, fans and other equipment and supplies were transferred from Salem Presbyterian Church or purchased together. Since March of 2011, we have hosted 4 to 5 times annually. In 2012, Calvary United Methodist Church joined as a support church assisting with meals and dinner hosts. In November of 2016, we received a request from Family Promise to provide housing for a second week that would be hosted by Salem Presbyterian Church. It was a short notice request (approved by Church Council) as two churches were unable to continue and two new churches are being welcomed into the list of congregations who are serving as support congregations. St Paul s Episcopal Church will serve as a support congregation to College Lutheran during the first week. Restoration Church will serve as the support congregation to host congregation Salem Presbyterian. We are all planning together so the weeks will move smoothly together. We will host a maximum of four (4) times a year. This means that the total weeks in which guests will be housed overnight at College Lutheran is eight (8). As this Forum is published, College, St Paul s and Calvary will be hosting three (3) families who include 5 adults and 6 children who range in age from 16 months to 17 years. GOOD NEWS FROM FAMILY PROMISE OF GREATER ROANOKE GUEST FAMILIES A 96% success rate of families moving from Family Promise into permanent housing was experienced in 2016! More final statistics for 2016: -Families sheltered 26 -Number of those families that were placed into permanent housing 25 (96%) -Number of adults served 37 -Number of children served 43 -Number of families served in Family Promise Housing Stability aftercare program 50 A very special thank you to: -Sunday School teachers and students and other volunteers who assist in transforming classrooms into guest rooms and the return to classrooms -Volunteers who serve as dinner and overnight hosts -Volunteers who provide meals and supplies -Everyone who provides support to our hosting of Family Promise guests
