The funds also pay for books, videos, audio, ebooks, computers, Internet, programs, outreach, databases, future capital improvement projects, and much more. This funding allows us to bring many programs and services that would otherwise be unavailable to the citizens of Livingston Parish, Library Director Giovanni Tairov says. We are proud to be our community s resource for innovative programs, cutting-edge technology, an outstanding collection of printed and digital media, life-long learning, and entertainment. This is a renewal of the same 10 mill property tax Livingston Parish voters approved 10 years ago. A home assessed at $150,000 will pay $75 per year while a home assessed at $200,000 will pay $125 per year. In turn, Livingston Parish Library provides cost savings to all Livingston Parish residents who use its services. For example, a patron who checks out one book each month instead of buying it would see a savings of $200 per year. Adding additional library services such as use of digital materials, online databases, and attendance at free programs makes cost savings seen by library patrons even more substantial. The Livingston Parish Library Board of Control has done an exceptional job managing the funds for the operation and improvement of the library, Tairov says. In the last 10 years, thanks to the 10 mill dedicated funding approved by the voters in 2005, the library branches have been transformed into state of the art facilities and the pride of our community.» For Livingston Parish Library by the numbers, turn to Page 5.

2 REPORT FROM OUR DIRECTOR Please Vote On Saturday, April 5 GIOVANNI TAIROV, Library Director The vote to renew the library s funding does not happen every 10 years at the voting booth; it happens every time a patron visits the library. On Saturday, April 5, Livingston Parish Library is asking the citizens to vote on the renewal of its 10-mill property tax, which would fund the library s operations for the next 10 years. This is not a new tax and, if renewed, it would allow the library to keep its doors open while providing the highest level of services to the residents of Livingston Parish. This issue contains much useful information, including our latest statistical data, that can help you make that decision. During the last 10 years, Livingston Parish Library has transformed into a thriving, modern library system. Five new state-of-the-art facilities were constructed. The Library Board of Control has set clear goals for the administration and staff, resulting in improvements in the quality of services, a wider selection of electronic and printed resources, the latest technological offerings, and many other significant improvements. As someone told me a long time ago, The vote to renew the library s funding does not happen every 10 years at the voting booth; it happens every time a patron visits the library. I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. Our patrons have noticed the value the library brings into their lives. The library has become an integral part of this community, a place of cultural and educational enrichment. Our goal is to continue to be at the forefront promoting literacy and the love of reading in Livingston Parish. Please vote. Starting A Small Business? You can take advantage of free business consulting at the Main Branch on Wednesday, March 12 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Receive a private, one-hour consulting session with a LSBDC representative in areas including business plans, advertising plans, inventory control, financial projections, cost analysis, and much more. 3 Create A Decorative Sugar Egg Decorate for Easter this year with an intricate sugar egg! Sugar eggs are a fun Easter-themed craft that can be saved and displayed for many years. This month, Livingston Parish Library gives you the opportunity to create and decorate a sugar egg of your own. We will provide all materials. While all of the ingredients are edible, the final results should not be eaten. The South Branch workshop is Saturday, March 22 at 10:30 a.m. while the Albany-Springfield Branch event is Thursday, March 27 at 5:30 p.m. The Watson Branch hosts a workshop on Monday, March 31 at 6:00 p.m. as part of their Crafts & Coffee series. Mardi Gras Indians Visit Genealogy 101 Are you interested in genealogy but have no clue where to start? We can help! The Watson Branch offers Genealogy 101: An Introduction for amateur family history enthusiasts on Thursday, March 20 at 6:00 p.m. Learn about the process of starting genealogical research, resources and people who can help you, types of documents to collect, and how to keep it all organized. The Denham Springs-Walker Branch hosts a three-part Mardi Gras Indians event on Sunday, March 9 at 2:30 p.m. First, Dr. Joyce M. Jackson, Director of the African & African American Studies Program at LSU, will speak about the tradition s history, aesthetics, and its place as cultural street theater. Then at 3:30 p.m., see a Mardi Gras Indian work on his suit. You can look at his patches and feathers, and ask questions as he works. To conclude the presentation, children of all ages are invited to join us for a special storytime led by a Mardi Gras Indian at 4:00 p.m. Learn Mardi Gras Indian songs, listen to Mardi Gras Indian stories, and make your own Mardi Gras mask. Affordable Care Act Educational Session Navigators For A Healthy Louisiana present a forum where patrons can get answers to their questions about the Affordable Care Act and purchasing insurance through the federal health insurance marketplace. Hosted by the Main Branch on Thursday, March 27 at 6:00 p.m., the session will also include oneon-one assistance to help participants choose the right insurance for themselves and their families. Creative Aging The Denham Springs-Walker Branch hosts this class designed for ages 55 and up with all levels of acting experience and physical ability. Together we will work on improvisation, character, voice and speech work, movement, and scene study in a fun and encouraging environment. Create A Handmade Cloth Doll Local artist Barbara Franklin will share the time-honored art of creating one-of-akind cloth dolls at a workshop hosted by the Main Branch on Wednesday, March 5 at 2:00 p.m. Franklin has made dolls for more than thirty years and now seeks to pass on her doll-making skills to others. Get Your Taxes Done For Free Tax season is ongoing, and Livingston Parish Library offers free tax preparation through Tuesday, April 15. Co-sponsored by Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and the Internal Revenue Service, this service offers free tax preparation for participants with an income of $50,000 or less for VITA volunteers prepare tax returns at three branches this month. The Denham Springs-Walker Branch s events are each Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 1 and March 15 from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., and Tuesday, March 25 from 4:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. The Albany-Springfield s sessions are Thursday, March 6 and March 20 from 5:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m. and Saturday. Your Library By The Numbers The numbers are in, and they show that Livingston Parish Library grew steadily in Here are some of the ways our five branches served Livingston Parish residents last year: Approximately 393,321 patrons visited Livingston Parish Library branches in That s 44,468 more people, or a 13% increase, since Patrons who visited the library checked out 472,511 items last year approximately 20,388 more items, or 4%, more than in Livingston Parish Library presented 1,265 programs in That s more than three programs a day for a whole year. Approximately 19,260 people attended Livingston Parish Library programs last year. That s more than the population of Denham Springs!
