As of Fall of 2007, Cal Poly SLO has been accepted into the Alliance to Save Enegy s. The team in SLO is made up of five academically divese intens that each bing a unique skill set to the pogam. Decembe 1st, 2007 CPSLO and Alliance to Save Enegy pesents Califonia Polytechnic State Univesity Geen pesents DR AF T Geen It Dom Enegy Competition Real-Time Monitoing 0708 Poject Plan Campus The Alliance to Save Enegy s Geen Campus is funded by the Califonia atepayes unde the auspices of the Califonia Public Utilities Commission, Southen Califonia Edison and the UC/CSU/IOU Enegy Efficiency Patneship Poject Plan Stating fom the left we have: Eic Veium, Neil Bulge, Chad Woth, Nancy J. Cole, and Josh Lowey. This quate, the Cal Poly team has woked to set the foundation fo the pogam and to establish netwoks thoughout campus, fom facilities, to housing and esidences, and to faculty and students. With a wealth of suppot, the has thee majo pojects set to kick-off next month. On Tuesday, Novembe 13th, Geen Campus CP_SLO hosted thei fist educational outeach campaign; a sceening of The Phantom Hunte: Enegy Saving Tips fo you Home, an enlightening video showing students how they too can save enegy in thei homes by simple and inexpensive ways to save enegy, wate, and money in 15 minutes. This comedic mastepiece, ceated by the Humboldt State, was sceened by of Cal Poly s most active Sustainability leades to use as a tool fo thei clubs and oganizations. The film was shown in the new engineeing building on the Cal Poly campus. The event was sponsoed by the and Empowe Poly Coalition. Students wee supised of how inexpensive and how affodable small enegy changes can be in you vey own home. 1
2 Team Bios Josh Lowey Chad Woth Nancy J. Cole Nancy is a 4th yea City and Regional Planning student with an emphasis in sustainable envionments. She is Student Council Pesident of the College of Achitectue and Envionmental Design, and Intenal Vice-Pesident of Empowe Poly Coalition. In the summe of 2006, Nancy intened with Diablo Valley College to evaluate the optimum enegy geneation fo a sola enegy system. The outcomes of he epot led to the successful installation of a 1 megawatt sola enegy system ove the paking lots. Nancy enjoys iding public tanspotation duing ush hou, walking in the edwoods and any kind of activity that does not involve the automobile. Josh is a 4th yea Envionmental Management and Potection student with an emphasis on sustainable envionments. Josh is developing a boad education incopoating ecological pinciples, envionmental law, and sustainable design. Since in San Luis Obispo, he has become an adamant bicycle enthusiast and advocate. Upon gaduation, Josh hopes to become involved in enegy consulting and hopefully attend gaduate school. Chad is a 5th yea Industial Engineeing student and Pesident of the Empowe Poly Coalition, the coalition of sustainability clubs and oganizations on campus. Last summe Chad intened with PG&E in San Fancisco as a Technical Solutions Enginee pefoming lage commecial and industial enegy audits. Chad is a columnist fo the Mustang Daily s Geen Spot, a bicylce enthusiast, and upon gaduation wants to hike fom Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Cest Tail. Neil Bulge Neil is a 5th yea Mechanical Engineeing student and the Pesident of the Renewable Enegy Club at Cal Poly. Neil spent the summe in Seattle, Washington woking fo The DLR Goup, one of the lagest achitectue and engineeing fims in the nation. Though this position, he acquied a backgound in HVAC and enegy modeling softwae. Neil spends most of his days (and nights) on campus and has become a oad bike enthusiast. Eic Vieum Eic Vieum is a vey stong suppote of the sustainability movement on campus. Cuently, Eic is the pesident of Cal Poly Biodiesel, Co-diecto of Envionmental Council, and now inten fo the. Eic has shown his desie to make changes hee at Cal Poly and set an example fo ou community and fo geneations of students to come. Eic is an Industial Engineeing senio hee at Cal Poly. 2
3 On the Road: Intens Tavel the State CSU Chico, Ca CSU Facilities Management Confeence Sacamento, Ca This past month fom Novembe 1st- 4th, fou of the intens fom Cal Poly taveled to Chico fo the This Way to Sustainability Confeence III. The confeence lasted 4 days and was a geat expeience fo the team to meet and shae ideas with some of the leading colleges in the Geen Campus. The Humbolt and Chico teams held wokshops and shaed ideas about how pogams woked on thei campuses and a few of thei success stoies. The amount of enegy and excitement in thei s was vey contagious and eally demonstated how much fun all these pojects can be. Fom Novembe 4th -6th intens Chad Woth and Eic Veium epesented the Cal Poly at the CSU Facilities Management Confeence in Sacamento, Ca. At this confeence Chad and Eic staffed a table and talked to confeence attendees about pojects at Cal Poly. Additionally, Chad and Eic attended keynote speeches fom fome Califonia Congessman Leon Panetta and Califonia Public Utilities Commissione Dian Gueneich about enegy policy, enegy efficiency and the envionment. They also paticipated in vaious wokshops elating to best pactice in campus enegy efficiency and sustainability. CSU Facilities Management Confeence Cal Poly cew in Chico, CA 3
4 CFL Give-Away Duing the month of Octobe, Cal Poly, in patneship with PG&E, gave away 2000 CFLs (compact fluoescent lightbulbs) to students, faculty and community membes. Though the effots of seveal campus oganizations and intens, all of the bulbs wee given away in unde two weeks. We want to thank Associate Diecto of Residential Life Suzanne Fitz, Coodinato of Student Development Jeffey Hill, Hall RAs, and student voluntees fo all thei wok oganizing and unning CFL Exchanges in eight Residence Halls. The exchanges wee vey successful with ove 600 bulbs given away ove thee days. The student voluntees also ceated this awesome bookmak of CFL fun facts to include along with the light bulbs. Fee CFLs might sound like an awesome deal, but they don t just give themselves away. intens and local PG&E account manages tabled in the Univesity Union handing out bulbs, speaking to students, and demonstating the enegy savings of CFLs using a mock electicity mete just like the one you would find at you home. Intens also collaboated in thei fist event with Residential Life. It was definitely the beginning of a beautiful fiendship. Cal Poly Student Community Sevices voluntees and intens stood outside Scolai s gocey on National Make a Diffeence Day to collect needed items fo Southen Califonia wildfie victims. Exiting patons wee also given ove 200 CFLs. You give something; you get something, now that s a deal! Changing a light bulb may not save the wold, but it s a stat! Hee is the estimated impact of the Cal Poly CFL giveaway: K W h D o lla s T o n s o f C O 2 C a s o ff the R o a d 4 940,000 $103, Note: Values based off of $.11 KWh, 10,000 hou bulb life, &.5 lbs CO2/Kwh.
5 Geen IT Powe Managment Softwae Poject Coodinatos: Josh Lowey and Eic Veium To date, is evaluating thee softwae options fo implementation of powe saving featues on a netwok-wide scale. The fist option is a fee softwae povided by the EPA Enegy Sta pogam called EZ GPO, the second is Suveyotm fom Vediemtm, and the thid option is Powe Save fom Faonics. Computes wasting enegy! Intens ae conducting an assessment of the thee options to pesent to the IT stakeholdes who will make the final decision on the best softwae. A meeting with Caig Schultz and Tey Vahey of the IT depatment is scheduled to take place on Dec. 4th and will cove the poposed plan to implement a pilot pogam with the selected softwae. Cuently, meetings ae being conducted between Intens, Dennis Elliot fom Facility Sevices, and the Vediem and Faonics sales epesentatives to develop a basic undestanding of the scope of thei softwae and how it could benefit Cal Poly. Once IT has a chance to delibeate on the options available, hopes to play a citical ole in the testing and implementation of the pilot poject. Dom Enegy Competition Poject Coodinatos: Nancy J. Cole and Neil Bulge The winte quate will mak the commencement of Cal Poly s fist Dom Enegy Competition. As pat of an initiative to pomote student embodiment of od envionmental pactices, this pogam will initiate a competition that tagets oncampus lifestyles. The outcomes ae twofold: to educe the enegy usage in domitoy housing and to encouage students to adopt esponsible enegy habits in the futue. Red-Bick Doms at Cal Poly The assessment will be pefomed by students in two domitoies unde the guidance of the Facilities Sevices, Resident Life and Campus Housing. Students living in domitoies have a geat deal of contol ove thei electicity use. Fom leaving the X Box on to keeping the lights and computes on, students can easily modify thei behavios to make big change. 5
6 The Dom Enegy Competition is the fist poject that encouages education of on-campus enegy consumption. This elatively low-tech pilot poject will measue the value of awaeness on educing enegy use in cost savings. The success of this poject will detemine whethe othe pojects elated to behavioal patten change will pove fuitful at Cal Poly SLO. The dom enegy competition will last fo 1 month unning in the middle of the Winte Quate. This competition will a pilot study taking place between two doms on the Cal Poly campus. Duing the competition, esidence in both doms will be infomed about ways to save enegy thoughout the competition though small events. Dom End-Use Enegy Monitoing Feasibility Study Poject Coodinato: Chad Woth Cuently, domitoy esidents ae sepaated fom the economics of enegy and esouces due to the fixed costs of on-campus living. In ode to stimulate enegy and esouce eduction, dom esidents can be made awae of the magnitude of thei impact on pollution, esouce depletion, and global climate change with an end-use inteactive enegy monitoing system. Cuent infastuctue is in place to manage enegy and esouce consumption on the Cal Poly campus. Integation with Facilities poposed expansion of enegy monitoing equipment could povide unique educational outcomes. The existing system, coupled with a use-fiendly inteface, will lay the foundation fo behavioal patten change among end-uses. An economic feasibility study will be pefomed by Chad Woth on the viability of a dom-wide monitoing and display system that tacks electicity, and natual gas consumption.
