1 WMPC WEEKLY Volume LII May 30, 2018 No. 22 The Beginning of Summer Musings This past weekend marked the unofficial beginning of summer. Summer is an exciting time for many as trips are planned and families and friends gather for picnics, cookouts and vacations. Schedules often change, giving us opportunities to relax and enjoy and experience life in different ways. At White Memorial, summer means a change of pace as many of our regular activities such as Bible studies, Sunday School classes, Wednesdays Together dinners, youth gatherings, and even many committees meetings do not take place during the summer. Summer is a time when many special ministries, activities and events take place. This Sunday is Graduation Sunday at White Memorial. We will recognize our high school seniors during the 10:00 a.m. worship service in the Sanctuary. Graduation is a significant milestone marking an end to 13 years of study and the beginning of the next chapter in the lives of the graduates. They will discern their way forward their calling whether they are beginning college education or working. The scripture passages for worship on June 3 lead us to think about how to live out our calling faithfully. Whether we are new graduates, in the midst of educational pursuits, in the midst of careers or in retirement, discerning how to faithfully live into our callings to be God s people is a daily part of our lives. As a reminder, Sunday, June 3, also marks the beginning of our summer worship schedule. We will have one service at 8:15 a.m. in the Sanctuary and two services at 10:00 a.m. Sanctuary and OnPoint@1704 in Pickard Hall. Other activities to note in the coming weeks: Show Up & Serve mission project, Saturday, June 2, 10:00 a.m.-noon in Geneva Oberlin Village BBQ dinner, Saturday, June 2, 5:00-8:00 p.m. at 1012 Oberlin Road, beside Interact Bumper Crop Day for Wake Relief pick up a bag on June 3, fill it and return it on June 10. (Hunger does not take a summer vacation, so please help in this much-needed project.) Exploring Faith through Making Art June 3, 5:00-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, First Wednesday Spaghetti Supper (the last Wednesday supper until September) Youth and adult advisors leave for the Appalachian Service Project on June 10 Oak City Outreach June 10 Vacation Bible School June As you can see, there is much to do and many opportunities this month. This week marks the beginning of Christopher Edmonston s sabbatical. Please join me in praying for Christopher and his family during this time of rest, renewal, study and travel. Home Communion Visits Church elders and pastoral staff are available to provide home communion if you or someone you know cannot attend worship. If you would like to schedule a visit to share the sacrament of communion in your home, please contact Jim Ferry at , ext. 208, and let us know of your interest. Is a White Memorial Friend or Relative in the Hospital? Please call the church office to let us know of relatives and friends who are in the hospital so that our pastoral staff may visit them. Due to HIPAA regulations, hospitals do not inform us when a member is hospitalized (even though a request for your church affiliation may appear on the admissions form.) We print members names in this newsletter and on our hospital board at church so that we may pray for them. Please tell us if you or a relative do not want your name included, otherwise, we will follow our usual practice. If so, stay tuned for more information about Sounds on Oberlin, a new concert series beginning Fall 2018 at White Memorial. Presbyterian Women Honor Five New Lifetime Members On May 14, Presbyterian Women honored Cynthia Baggett, Miriam Dorsey, Kelly Gold, Betsy Hutchinson and Michelle Jeutter as Honorary Lifetime Members. These women embody the caring, supportive community of Presbyterian Women. Thank you for being such a vital part of our ministry. Would you like to be an organ assistant for a service this summer? Whether you are 7 or 107, have a musical background or don t know how to read a note, we invite you to sign-up to be an organ assistant. It s an opportunity to sit with Dr. H or Dr. Z at the organ console, set up registrations (sounds), chime the trinity and more. You must be available 10 minutes prior to the start of the service and until the last note of the postlude dims. It s easy to claim your spot. 3 Community Ministry and Missions BBQ Dinner Celebrate Oberlin Village on June 2 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. The Friends of Oberlin are having a BBQ dinner and fun activities such as music, a cake dance and historic cemetery tours. The location is 1012 Oberlin Road, beside Interact. The dinner is $10 and includes dessert and beverage. Bring your own chair and enjoy a great time with friends along Oberlin Road. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time at oberlinvillagebbq.bpt.me or at the event. Russia Knitting & Crocheting Group Summer has begun. Has your knitting project? Come join Russia, Etc. Knit and Crochet on June 5 at 9:30 a.m. in C200. We have plenty of yarn, patterns, hooks and needles. Everyone is welcome to join us for coffee, snacks and conversation. Contact Faye Senter at or fsenter@bellsouth.net. Let s Feed the Animals Companion Animal Ministry is collecting dog and cat food for the SPCA of Wake County s AniMeals program. The SPCA will give your donations to Resources for Seniors to distribute to homebound seniors and disabled adults. Your participation will help local citizens in need from having to choose between feeding their pets or paying bills, buying medicine or buying enough food to feed themselves and their families. Donations of dog and cat food can be put in the CAM/SPCA collection tub in The Connector. Clothing Closet Now Accepting Spring & Summer Items This has been a great year for the Clothing Closet. We have received many gifts of new and gently used clothing from WMPC members and the community. Did you know we also accept bed and bath linens in good condition? Your gifts go to organizations such as The Healing Place for Men and Women, Dorcas and Dress of Success, to name a few. The closet will be closed in July but will reopen in August. Our collection dates are the first and third Wednesday of each month from 8:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. We are now accepting spring and summer items. Thank you for your continued support. Our volunteer staff is great! If you are interested in being a part of this group, please come by for a visit by or call Cornelius Swart at Oak City Outreach Collection Help the WMPC Young Adults collect donations for Oak City Outreach. Items needed are: bars of soap, wash cloths (dark colors), lotion, shaving cream, deodorant (men and women), toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, cough drops, tissue (individual packs), lip balm, disposable razors, over the counter pain relievers. 8 June 2 Show Up & Serve: Let s Do Lunch Join us on June 2 from 10:00 a.m.-noon as we prepare Bumper Crop bags for distribution and pack lunches for Raleigh Rescue Mission. Bumper Crop Day for Wake Relief During June, Bumper Crops will collect items for Wake Relief. Please pick up a bag on June 3 and fill it with any items from the list that is stapled to the bag. Collection this month will be on June 10. Just leave your bag next to the back bumper of your car on your way into church that morning, and volunteers will be there to pick them up. If you ride the shuttle, please bring the bag with you and we will help unload. (In case of rain, drop off your bag at the Calvin Building.)
