Our Speaker and Topic: Harper Harris, Lead Interpreter, Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History The next meeting of the Civil War Round Table of Cobb County will be held at the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History located in downtown Kennesaw. His more than 36 years as a re-enactor give him a unique perspective on history. Please join us for our member Harper Harris presentation on The Great Locomotive Chase. Last Month s Meeting: Dr. Gordon Jones presented a very interesting program on War in Our Backyards: Discovering Atlanta, that challenged us to consider our personal connections to a war that was literally fought in all of our backyards. Although the battlefields around Atlanta are gone, there are visible connections hiding in plain view: historic artifacts, dug relics, maps, photographs, monuments, and the Cyclorama, which is one of the world s largest Civil War paintings. Using the latest interactive technology, War in Our Backyards shows historic map overlays to show what battles took place where you live.

3 The Atlanta History Center 130 West Paces Ferry Road NW Atlanta, Georgia March 2012 AHC Lecture: Martha M. Daniels, Mary Chesnut s Illustrated Diary: Mulberry Edition Boxed Set Saturday, March 3, :00 PM Mary Boykin Chesnut began her diary in February 1861, a few months before the attack on Fort Sumter began the Civil War, and ended it on June 26, 1865, just days after the last battle of the war. Between those dates, Chesnut often lived near the site of historic events as they unfolded, including Montgomery, Charleston, Columbia, and Richmond. As a result, she was an eyewitness to history and the pages of her diary capture the changing fortunes of the South and the role of politics, war, society, race, and slavery as her reflections of the Civil War unfold from within the aristocratic circles of Southern society. Chesnut's famous diary is now published with her personal photograph albums, which had been lost in the 1930s and rediscovered in Conscientiously annotated and edited by Martha M. Daniels, a Chesnut descendant, many of these personal images have never before been seen. The photographs complete Chesnut s Civil War history, providing insight into her culture and the nation s greatest conflict, and creating the record of words and pictures that Mary Chesnut always intended. Carter Presidential Library & Museum Theater Winston Groom "SHILOH 1862 (and Forrest Gump)" Reading / Book Signing Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 7:00pm Carter Presidential Library & Museum Theater Free and Open to the Public Winston Groom enhances his solid reputation as a writer of general audience military history with this narrative of the Civil War s first major battle in the west. Shiloh was fought by armies unprepared in every way. Men and regiments were untrained; armament was improvised; senior officers were no more than uniformed civilians. Groom skillfully uses personal narratives to reconstruct the horror of slaughter pens like the Hornets Nest, where Union troops drove back eight attacks before surrendering. Disorganized by victory, the Confederates stumbled, and then retreated as Union reinforcements began reaching the field. The battle was a tactical draw, not for lack of courage but from want of skill.
