GOVERNMENT-RELATED ORGANIZATIONS As mentioned earlier, although a national inventory on intangible cultural heritage is yet to be available in Malaysia, many agencies, organisations and individuals have already conducted efforts in the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage domains based upon their capacity. Most of these efforts are conducted under other frameworks, such as culture, heritage, performing arts, traditional practices and so on. While these frameworks may not necessary be using the terms, domains, elements or items as introduced in the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003), they provide important references for the forthcoming efforts in inventorying the intangible cultural heritage terms in Malaysia. The following lists provide basic information on intangible cultural heritage related organisations at the federal and state levels. NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS In Malaysia, intangible cultural heritage related non-governmental organisations are often associated with ethnic culture, local history, traditional games or communities. The website of National Department for Culture and Arts ( has listed some related nongovernmental organisations. However, there are plenty of others, in particular the vernaculars, rural-based, underground, not actively at governmental activities, not using online platforms organisations, are not named in this list. To explore more information from the non-governmental organisations, the research team has sent out a bilingual survey form to forty-nine (49) organisations all over the country in July 2016 but none of them replied. It was a puzzling reaction, but most probably these organisations do not associate themselves with new term such as intangible cultural heritage and therefore refused to participate in the survey exercise. Another possible explanation is the non-user friendly contents of the survey form. A copy of the survey form is attached in Annex 6.
