1 First Year Student Orientation Schedule 2018 Tuesday, August 21 st 8:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Residence Life Check-In Location: Residence Halls (Your exact time will be provided via . Please reference the housing assignment if you have questions) 8:00 a.m. 5:30 p.m. Orientation Check-In Location: Students Argyros Forum 206 Location: Families Argyros Forum 209 4:00 5:00 p.m. Commuter Student and Family Meet and Greet Location: Argyros Forum, Room 201 Welcome Commuters! Here, our new first-year commuter students and families can meet current Chapman commuter students. Learn a few tips and tricks directly from our student panel as well as a small presentation by Director of Residence Life and First Year Experience, Dave Sundby. 4:45 6:15 p.m. Panther Pride Dinner Locations: Bert Williams Mall /Attallah Piazza /Gray Victory Way/Other various locations on campus Reminder: You MUST wear a wristband to enter any meal during Orientation. Cardinal and grey are the colors we hope to see everyone wearing at this dinner! Welcome to the Chapman family. 5:15-6:30 p.m. Department of Art Meet & Greet Location: Guggenheim Gallery Students studying fine art and their families will be able to get a better look at the facilities, classrooms & studios. Students will also get to mix and mingle with one another, faculty members, and department heads. 7:00 8:00 p.m. Opening Convocation Location: Wilson Field Students please enter the Field through the North Gate starting at 6:15 p.m. Families proceed to the bleachers of Wilson Field through any gates. Convocation will begin promptly at 7:00 pm This traditional event is the formal opening to Chapman s academic year. Faculty in full regalia march in procession and President Struppa officially launches the semester. Dr. Amir Raz, Professor and Director of the Institute for

2 Interdisciplinary Brain and Behavioral Sciences will give the annual Aims of Education inspirational address. After Convocation, Orientation will officially begin. At the Conclusion of this Program, Families please remain seated as students exit through the North gate and proceed to the Residence Halls for a Mandatory Residence Life Meeting if they will be living on campus or to the 4 th Floor Patio of Beckman Hall for the Commuter Student Social. Once students have exited, families are welcome to attend the Wine and Cheese Reception hosted by Dr. Jerry Price, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students in Argyros Forum. 8:30 10:00 p.m. Residence Life Meetings (MANDATORY for students living in the Residence Halls) Location: Your Residence Hall Gather in your residence hall to meet your Resident Director (RD) and Resident Advisor (RA) while learning more about living in the residential community. This also provides the opportunity to meet your suitemates and neighbors. Talk to your Resident Advisor (RA) about your specific meeting time and location. 8:15 9:30 p.m. Commuter Student Social Location: Beckman 4 th Floor, Small Patio Get to know other commuters and get a prime view of Chapman! Meet current Chapman commuter students and learn from those who have navigated this experience successfully. There will be refreshments, sweet treats and games for all to enjoy! Wednesday, August 22 nd 9:00 10:00 a.m. Continental Breakfast Location: Attallah Piazza/Panther Plaza 9:00 10:00 a.m. Orientation Check-In Location: Argyros Forum, Room 205 *Check-In is only required for students and families who did not check in Tuesday, 8/22 10:00 11:15 a.m. Fenestra Forum Location: Small Group Meeting Locations (provided during check-in)* During your Fenestra Forum sessions throughout the week, you will meet with your Orientation Leaders and classmates from your major. These sessions are a time to get to know your peers, discuss Orientation events, and understand what to expect during the week. Your specific rotation locations will be explained in this session, so please be in attendance. 11:15 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Chapman Family BBQ Locations: Bert Williams Mall /Attallah Piazza /Gray Victory Way Please utilize any available seating in any of the zones represented on the map on page 14. 3 12:45 2:00 p.m. Fenestra Forum Location: Small Group Meeting Locations Students will complete CIRP (Cooperating Institutional Research Program) surveys during the beginning of this session. They will also have a chance to ask their Orientation Leader specific questions regarding Chapman life! 2:00 4:00 p.m. College of Performing Arts Departmental Major Meeting Location: Waltmar Theater This is an opportunity to meet staff and faculty members from your major. 2:30 4:00 p.m. Departmental Major Meetings Location: See last pages for your department meeting location. This is an opportunity to meet staff and faculty members from your major. 4:00 5:45 p.m. Student Services Fair Location: Argyros Forum, First Floor Come mingle with other new students and families as you explore booths representing over 30 on-campus departments. There will also be cool mocktails, Chapman safety whistles, and helpful safety tips provided by C.A.R.E.S. 4:00 5:00 p.m. Business Office Workshop Location: Beckman Hall, Room 104 Representatives from the Business Office will answer your questions regarding billing, loans, and scholarships. Both families and students are welcome to attend. 4:00 5:00 p.m. Cyber Self Defense Workshop Location: Beckman Hall, Room 103 Become a cyber-hero! Learn to spot scams, protect your credit cards online, and keep your social media from being hacked. Meet an FBI Cyber Crimes Special Agent, and Chapman students from a Schmid College Grand Challenges Initiative Team at this interactive workshop. Everyone welcome! 4:15 4:45 p.m. Singapore Flag Dedication Location: Ambassador George L. Argyros Global Citizens Plaza With a student population representing more than 60 countries and over 50 percent of our students participating in study abroad programs, global citizenship is a priority at Chapman. The Global Citizens Plaza symbolizes our dedication to expanding perspectives as a hallmark of the Chapman Experience. This is an opportunity to meet new students in your School/College as well as some of the faculty and administration with whom you will be interacting while at Chapman. Undeclared Students Location: Aitken Arts Plaza 7:45 8:15 p.m. Pillars of Your Education, Candle Lighting Ceremony Location: Attallah Piazza Incoming Chapman students, parents and families are invited to gather around the fountain and four pillars in the Attallah Piazza to celebrate the pillars of Chapman University symbolizing our intellectual, spiritual, social and physical life. This brief ceremony will end with candle lighting as we bid goodbye to families and welcome you to the Chapman family! 8:30 10:00 p.m. Playfair Location: Wilson Field This is an experience you will never forget! Wear something comfortable (no heels!) and get ready for a fun activity that will get your energy pumping and give you the chance to meet the entire incoming student class. 10:00 p.m. 11:59 p.m. Chapman After Dark Location: Residence Halls Break out the glow sticks and get ready for a bright night full of fun games, food, music and dancing put on by Residence Life and First Year Experience! Head into Randall Dining Commons for Sweet Tunes, featuring a dessert bar and performances from Chapman s own a cappella singing groups. Also featuring, Paint and Sip in the Henley Basement, which the first 90 students will go through a Chapman themed painting step-by-step while enjoying some apple cider and good company. You can even head over to the Silent Disco Dance Party hosted on the basketball courts, with music that you and anyone with a pair of headphones can hear! Lastly, stop by the Dotti- Struppa Rock wall to learn more about this awesome recreational activity! Thursday, August 23 rd 8:30 9:15 a.m. Breakfast 9:30 10:00 a.m. Fenestra Forum Location: Small Group Meeting Locations Students will have a chance to discuss Expectations, the summer blog, with their OLs and Fenestra Forum group and prepare their thoughts and questions for the upcoming Faculty Panel and ChapED Talks. 10:15 11:00 a.m. Faculty Panel Yellow, Orange, and Red Groups Location: Memorial Hall

6 A panel of faculty takes moderated questions from an interviewer, as well as questions from students themselves. Be ready: the faculty will also ask questions of the audience in this interactive student-faculty session. This session will provide you with information, perhaps a reality check, and certainly a clear sense of the difference between your former high school classrooms and your future university discussions. 10:15 11:00 a.m. ChapED Talks Pink, Blue, and Purple Groups Location: Musco Center for the Arts ChapED talks will answer the important questions: Why go to college? What do you get out of it? Why does it matter? Then after, head out onto Aitkens Arts Plaza to dance along to the live music of Chapman s favorite sitar player Ronobir Lahiri and participate in the beloved Chapman tradition of tying your ribbon to your class Window of opportunity sculpture. In this session students will get to learn about themselves, each other, and how we all fit into and make up the Chapman community. 1:00 3:00 pm Jummah Prayers followed by Director of Muslim Life Meet and Greet Location: Wilkinson Founders Chapel Join Chapman s Director for Muslim Life and Chaplain to the University, Shaykh Jibreel Speight, for prayers followed by an opportunity to get acquainted with him, and hear about Muslim life on campus. 1:00 4:00 pm Getting Involved Location: Argyros Forum, Second Floor Come learn about the various ways to get involved on campus. 9 4:30 5:30 p.m. First-Generation College Students Meet other students who are the first in their family to go to college! Learn about the resources available to you and how to make the most of Chapman as a first-generation student. International Students Join us for the International Student Social. We will get to know each other and talk about the bus & train system, nearby grocery stores, restaurants, fun things to do, etc. Current international students and staff will be available to answer any questions/problems you may have! Spiritual Exploration Social The Fish Interfaith Center on the Chapman University campus offers opportunities for students who are interested in spirituality of any type. If you consider yourself simply a Seeker, curious about developing your spiritual path, practicing meditation, or learning about different religions, we have opportunities for you. If you are involved in or interested in a particular spiritual path, such as Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, or Judaism, we can connect you with student groups to pursue your faith journey. We have particular programs for Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), United Church of Christ, Latter-day Saints, Catholic, non-denominational and other Christian students as well. Finally, our beautiful Wallace All Faiths Chapel, located in the Fish Interfaith Center, is here for your use! Come and meet our staff and find out about programs and space available at Chapman for you! Students with Disabilities This social is an opportunity for our incoming students with disabilities to network, ask questions, and dialogue as we enjoy each other s company and experience. This will be a great time to gather to begin the process of building a community within the Chapman community and discovering the resources available to you as you navigate your college experience. 5:30 6:30 p.m. LGBTQIA+ Community Chapman s LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex & Asexual/Ally) staff, faculty and students are thrilled to welcome the Class of 2022 into our open and welcoming community! This social will provide a chance for new students to explore ways to get involved in the LGBTQIA+ community here on campus through organizations such as Chapman Feminists, Queer and Trans People of Color Collective (QTPOC) and Queer Straight Alliance (QSA), mix and mingle with other like-minded individuals, and begin building a network of support to enrich their Chapman experience. Students Who Identify as Women Come to this social for the chance to network with women who have the potential to affect Chapman University in a positive and significant way. Women are shifting both the academic and work world and this social is a great way to meet your peers, start the process of supporting one another, and learn about the resources Chapman has to help you successfully navigate your college career. Students of Color This social is an opportunity for our incoming students of color to network, ask questions, and dialogue as we enjoy each other s company and experience. This will be a great time to gather to begin the process of building a community within the Chapman community.

Come meet new friends and join in fellowship. 6:30 8:30 p.m. Shabbat Service and Dinner Location: Wilkinson Founders Chapel Chapman Hillel, Chapman s Jewish Student Union, hosts its first Shabbat service of the year. Feel free to join us in the Wilkinson Founders Chapel at the Fish Interfaith Center for a Shabbat service, open to all Jewish and non- Jewish Chapman students, with a kosher dinner to follow, provided by the Hillel Foundation of Orange County. This is the best opportunity to gather with participants in the First Year Photo Project to build upon the connections made over the summer. Students will be able to meet their peers and learn more about the artists behind the camera, while discussing the project and learning more about what s ahead. 9:00 p.m. 1:00 a.m. UPB and Orientation Presents... Club Throwback Location: Argyros Forum, Student Union, and Second Floor Get ready for a night that will allow you to party like it s 1999! We re taking it way back for a night of flashback friday fun in Argyros Forum with dancing, arcade games, and a movie. Grab your friends, dress in your best 80 s, 90 s, and 2000 s attire, and dance your heart out. It s definitely a night you won t want to miss! Saturday, August 25 th 11:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. Brunch 10:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. Yoga on the Lawn Location: Bert Williams Mall (Memorial Lawn) Join Fitness and Recreation Services and the University Program Board for our first Yoga on the Lawn of the school year! Bring your yoga mat and a friend and join our Union Fit leaders for a free yoga session. 5:30 6:30 p.m. Dinner 8:00 10:00 p.m. All-University Event Location: Memorial Hall Come join your peers for a night full of laughs and entertainment hosted by our world-class comedy Improv team, Improv Inc.! One of Chapman s most beloved traditions is seeing Improv Inc. preform on Thursday nights, be sure to join us for their kickoff of the school year. A Mindfulness, Labyrinth, and Interfaith Experience Location: Wallace All Faiths Chapel Join the Chapman community to see how you can explore meaning and purpose at Chapman, whether you are secular, spiritual or religious. If you consider yourself a "spiritual seeker" curious about developing your spiritual path, are interested in practicing meditation or learning about different religions, or are committed to a certain spiritual or religious path, we have opportunities for you. Commemorate the beginning of your Chapman experience with an interfaith celebration, mindfulness meditation and labyrinth walk led by student leaders and the chaplain staff of the Fish Interfaith Center. The Fish Interfaith Center is here to help you shape your unique spiritual journey. 11:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. Brunch 2:00 5:00 p.m. Rec Day Location: Residence Life Area Fitness and Recreation Services will host its first Rec Day. Stop by for a 3v3 basketball tournament, opencourt volleyball, music, community vendors, and fun giveaways that showcase all that Fitness and Recreation Services has to offer. 2:00 4:00 p.m. Honors Mentor/Mentee Dessert Bash Location: Beckman Hall, Room 404 Students who have been admitted into the University Honors Program will be introduced to the program as well as meet their mentors and other returning Honors students, faculty and staff at the Dessert Bash.
