1 The Superintendent Dr. José A. Cervantes will hold a Plática, or discussion, with the Edgewood ISD community to talk about current and upcoming issues, projects, and accomplishments affecting the school district. Items to be discussed are Edgewood ISD s recent World-Class Transformations, including: New safety and security measures Improved bus and student drop-off lanes at Gardendale, Johnson, and Winston elementary schools New web site New vision statement and logo Transitioning several operations to Emma Frey and the Guerra Development Center Many other improvements within the District Dr. Cervantes held a similar Plática in February. Edgewood ISD, Youth Orchestras make music together Edgewood ISD and Youth Orchestras of San Antonio have teamed up to bring a strings program to District 4th and 5th graders. YOSA MÁS: Music After School will teach violin, viola, and cello to students. The program is taught by musicians and instruments are provided by YOSA MÁS. Edgewood will provide snacks and transportation from the students school to the Fine Arts Academy for the classes, which meet three times each week. A news conference was held September 25 to announce the partnership, which started on the West Side as the Music Learning Center in Edgewood ISD is appreciative to YOSA MÁS for bringing this opportunity to our students, Public Relations Officer Roland Martinez said. The Plática is scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, at 9 a.m. and at 5 p.m. at the Guerra Development Center, 1930 Herbert Lane. The public is invited. Vol. I, No. 12 Dr. Cervantes to hold Plática on District s upgrades, projects

2 Words from the Superintendent By Dr. José A. Cervantes The Edgewood Word 2 Hello, employees and followers of Edgewood ISD. With the school year already more than one month old, I hope this school year is going well for you. I reported last month that in all of my years as an educator, this school year was one of the best starts ever. There are many great things happening within Edgewood s 16 square miles. We are very proud of the Memorial Minutemen varsity football team, which has won several games midway through the season. This is a dramatic turnaround for the football program, under the leadership of second-year Head Coach Alex Guerra. The football team has received positive coverage in the newspaper and on TV. The team s success is a great example of how we, as employees of Edgewood ISD, can make transformations through hard work and determination. Speaking of improvements in Edgewood, I invite you to the Superintendent s Plática, or discussion, where I will talk about current and upcoming issues, projects, and accomplishments affecting the district. The Plática is scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, at 9 a.m. and at 5 p.m. at the Guerra Development Center, 1930 Herbert Lane. The public is invited. I am proud of our high school bands, which begin practicing their music and marching in the summer several weeks before the school year starts. The Kennedy Band is under the direction of Jose Luis Davila, who led the Gus Garcia MS Band for several years. The Memorial Band won almost everything in their category at the Drums Along the Medina Band Festival this month. The band, under the direction of Melba Alejos and Gloria Gonzalez, won Best Drum Majors, Best Color Guard, Best Marching, Best Musical Performance, and 1st Place Overall. While Edgewood ISD is a fairly small district in enrollment and land space, our accomplishments are bigger and better. We are committed to the belief that all children can meet challenging expectations. Our teachers, support staff and administrators share a common focus, which is to prepare our students to be ready to face the demands of today s society and tomorrow through a World-Class Education. Cisneros ES receives grant, in running for larger prize Roy Cisneros ES is the recipient of a $2,500 grant from Spurs Sports & Entertainment s Silver & Black Give Back Team Up Challenge. Cisneros community service club is a semifinalist along with 19 other student-led groups competing for one of five grants of $20,000 each. The $2,500 will be used to begin service learning projects that improve school communities. Cisneros students are focusing on character-building. Cisneros ES s community service club picked up a $2,500 check from Spurs Sports & Entertainment during a pep rally at the AT&T Center. Cisneros is competing against other student groups for five grand prizes of $20,000. Winners will be announced in April 2014.

4 The Edgewood Word 4 Edgewood, consortium aim for federal grant Edgewood ISD and eight South Texas school districts are vying jointly for a U.S. Department of Education 2013 Race to the Top grant. The competition invites applicants to demonstrate how they can improve teaching and learning, and personalize education for students. Edgewood is applying as the lead district in the NINE: Investing in the Future of South Texas consortium for an award of up to $30 million. The award would provide teachers the information, tools, and support that will enable them to meet the needs of each student and substantially accelerate and deepen each student s learning. Besides Edgewood, school districts in the consortium are Carrizo Springs, Cotulla, Devine, Eagle Pass, La Pryor, Natalia, Pearsall, and Poth. Evidence that at least 70 percent of teachers from participating schools support the proposal must be documented before the application can be submitted. Award notification is scheduled for December P.E.A.C.E. Initiative event invites dads to hear reinforcing messages about family The public is invited to Frank Mata Stadium on Saturday, October 26, for the Dads: Building Lifetimes of Love event sponsored by P.E.A.C.E.
