1 SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW GENEVA SUMMER PROGRAM JUNE-JULY 2012 A MESSAGE FROM DAVID SLOSS Dear Geneva Program Students, I am delighted that you will be joining me this summer in Geneva. I hope that this Newsletter will be helpful to you as you prepare for the summer. In addition to reading this document, please review carefully the Supplementary Newsletter prepared by Heather Harris, which I will send to you soon. Heather is a Santa Clara alumn who has been living in Geneva for more than a decade. Her Supplementary Newsletter contains lots of helpful information about living and studying in Geneva. I will be arriving in Geneva on Saturday, June 16. I will have a UK cell phone that works in Switzerland. That phone number is Before I leave for Europe, you can reach me via at dlsloss@scu.edu. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions regarding the Program. I look forward to seeing you in Geneva this summer. CLASSES All classes will be held on the campus of Webster University. The campus is located in the residential lakeside community of Bellevue. Easily accessible by public transportation from the center of Geneva, the train ride to campus is only about 7 minutes. In Bellevue, students can enjoy a pleasant stroll to two local ports Saladin and Gitana. Residents of Bellevue have access to a public beach area that was recently developed. A boat ride in summer months plies back and forth to Geneva. Five restaurants are situated a short walk from campus. A pharmacy, grocery shops, a travel agency and a bank offering ATM and change facilities are located nearby for students convenience. ORIENTATION There will be a mandatory orientation session at 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 17 in a classroom on the Webster University campus. Details about the specific location for the orientation session will be forthcoming. It is very important for all students to attend this session. Please make your travel plans accordingly. 1
2 HOUSING The 2012 Summer Abroad Geneva program offers two basic housing options: there are double rooms in the Residence Les Berges du Rhone (located downtown, about 25 minutes from campus by public transit); and single rooms in the Living and Learning Center on campus at Webster University. All rooms at both locations are priced at 75 swiss francs (CHF 75) per student, per day. Your housing charge will be billed to your student account. 1. Residence Les Berges du Rhone 8 DOUBLE OCCUPANCY ROOMS AVAILABLE The residence, Les Berges du Rhone, is a V shaped edifice, located on the banks of the river Rhone and facing the Pont de Sous-Terre. At the Les Berges du Rhone residence there are a variety of rooms. The double occupancy units are either shared studios or shared bedrooms within suites. The residents in the suites have access to a communal kitchen on their floor. The residents of the other units share a kitchen with their roommate or flatmate. All units vary in size due to the configuration of the building, a former Rolex watch-making factory. Amenities of Les Berges du Rhone Handicap access Wireless Internet access Coin operated laundry facilities Student lounge Well serviced by public transportation Security cameras and security guard check Nearby jogging along a nature path 2. The Living and Learning Center Webster University 8 SINGLES AVAILABLE A single studio is a single occupancy unit consisting of one room furnished with a bed, bedside table, wardrobe, desk and bookshelf, and equipped with a kitchenette and a private bathroom (shower and toilet). Amenities at LLC and on campus: Cafeteria Games room TV/movie lounge Snack bar Rooms are cable-tv-ready Laundry facilities Fitness room Assembly hall Computer internet access Use of adjacent tennis courts 2
3 LOCAL TRANSPORTATION I strongly recommend that each student purchase a monthly transit pass. The pass costs CHF 45 for people under 25 years of age, and CHF 70 for people over 25. The pass is valid for 30 days from the date of purchase. You will need to bring your passport to prove your age if you are under 25. You can purchase tickets at the TPG agency in the main train station in downtown Geneva (Gare Cornavin). Be prepared to tell them your address of residence in Geneva. Bring two passport-size photos with you. Alternatively, they will take your picture for a fee. Ask for a one-month Unireso Tout Genève ticket. The Unireso pass allows you to ride on every bus, train and shuttle boat in the whole Geneva area. The train (called Regio) goes every 30 minutes back and forth between Cornavin train station in downtown Geneva and the Webster campus in Bellevue. From Geneva to Bellevue: from platform 1 (direction Coppet), every 3 minutes and 33 minutes past the hour. Get off at the fourth stop, called Genthod-Bellevue. It s a seven minute train ride. From campus to Geneva: direction Genève-Lancy Pont-Rouge. The train stops at 15 minutes and 45 minutes past the hour. It s an 11-minute ride to Cornavin. For those living at Les Berges du Rhône. Take the tram (streetcar) # 14 from 'Palladium' or 'Jonction' to 'Cornavin' (direction Meyrin Gravière). Cornavin will be the fourth or fifth stop. The ride should take about eight minutes. Then get the train from Cornavin to Genthod-Bellevue. To return to Les Berges du Rhône, take the tram (streetcar) #14 from Cornavin in the direction of P+R Bernex. Get off at 'Palladium' or 'Jonction'. The commute to campus from Les Berges du Rhône is approximately 25 minutes in total. You can find additional information on the Geneva public transportation website and for the route planner.
