5 CONTINUING EDUCATION All of our Convention Education Seminars have been accredited by the New Jersey State Board of Mortuary Science, the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice (APFSP) and submitted for accreditation to other state licensing authorities. See page 15 for details on Accreditation. As a part of Convention Programming, New Jersey licensees will have an opportunity to earn a required CEU in Funeral Directing Ethics. This one-hour seminar is scheduled for Wednesday, September 26 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and again on Thursday, September 27 from 1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. See NJ Mandatory CEUs on page 13 for detailed information on earning up to 4 CEUs in the New Jersey mandated topics of Preneed Funeral Arrangements and New Jersey Laws and Rules. This four-hour program is scheduled for Wednesday, September 26 from 9:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., and requires a separate registration. 5

Using real-life case analysis, Carrie Parsons will discuss the impact of chronic drug use on final preparation and how myriad factors can affect the delivery of professional services. Carrie Parsons is the chief embalmer for the Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Homes and Crematory in Greenwood, Indiana. What I Wish My Funeral Director Knew: Supporting pregnancy loss families with Sarah Rickerd TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 Noon 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. It is the obligation of all funeral professionals to support the grief process of every family. Sarah Rickerd will guide attendees through the mindset of a pregnancy-loss parent, review internal practices funeral homes can implement to improve care and present actionable best practices to use when dealing with pregnancy-loss families. Sarah Rickerd is a columnist for the National Funeral Directors Association s Director magazine and the owner of the memorial jewelry company, Carry Your Heart. 6

Mazur Jr., CPA is the principal of Mazur & Associates, Certified Public Accountants and Business Advisors, PC in Red Bank, New Jersey. How to Make Social Media Work for Your Business with Ashley Montroy TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 1:30 p.m. 2:30 p.m. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 8:00 a.m. 9:00 a.m. Effective marketing is everything even for funeral homes. Ashley Montroy will show attendees how simple social media marketing can be with proper planning. Discussions on building funeral home brand awareness and how to run a targeted advertising campaign to generate more business will be the focus of this timely seminar. Ashley Montroy is the marketing director at FrontRunner Professional in Ontario, Canada. 7

Their teachings continue to shape contemporary values. Rev. Matthew P. Binkewicz will explore the ethics and morality guiding the funeral industry and examine ways to apply ethical standards in the funeral home. Rev. Matthew P. Binkewicz is a bereavement counselor, chaplain, author and educator at the State University of New York at Canton. Hot Dogs and Decomposition with Damon de la Cruz, PhD WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 9:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 9:00 a.m. 10:00 a.m. Funeral service has many esoteric and complex physiological phenomena. Damon de la Cruz, PhD will review the chemistry behind decomposition, rigor mortis and extravascular staining, explaining how they affect the selection of embalming chemicals and the techniques used to prepare the human remains for presentation. Damon de la Cruz, PhD is a licensed embalmer, funeral director and faculty member of the Mortuary Science Program at Cypress College in California. 8

Jason Troyer, PhD challenges conventional thinking by discussing the impact of family and workplace stressors and reviewing key processes to help avoid burnout and build resilience. Jason Troyer, PhD is an author, counselor and the founder of the Mt. Hope Grief Services and a psychology professor at Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee. Million Dollar Mistakes: Minimizing the risks of mortuary litigation with Emily A. Albrecht WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 9:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Noon Educating funeral service professionals on legal issues and risk management techniques that can be employed by funeral homes can help avoid costly litigation. Using real-world examples, Emily A. Albrecht will review the consequences of mortuary litigation, learning from the mistakes of other funeral service professionals, and discuss the importance of creating a risk management plan. Emily A. Albrecht is an attorney with the Defense Litigation Practice Group at Betts, Patterson & Mines, P.S. in Seattle, Washington. Pre-Register online and save. 9

Kelder Jr., CFSP WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. There is a high level of liability imposed on every funeral director when determining who has the authority to make decisions regarding funeral arrangements and disposition. George R. Kelder Jr., CFSP offers extensive analysis of New Jersey s Right to Control law and discusses pending legislation seeking to establish an alternate method for appointing a funeral agent. George R. Kelder Jr., CFSP is a licensed funeral director, CEO/Executive Director of the New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association, Inc., President of Thanexus, Inc. and Staff Trustee of Funeral Planning CHOICES. Law A-1 Disclosures: Complying with the FTC and Mortuary Board This seminar outlines the transparent consumer protections imposed through regulation by the Federal Trade Commission and the New Jersey State Board of Mortuary Science during the making of funeral arrangements and the quotation of prices to consumers. Detailed emphasis will be placed on the distribution and retention requirements for price lists and the Statement of Funeral Goods and Services Selected. Law B-2 Funeral Service Advertising This seminar covers how licensees and mortuary registrations publish, disseminate, circulate and broadcast advertisements. Attendees will learn the key components of true disclosure, what constitutes and does not constitute advertising, and what is permitted and prohibited in various forms of advertising. 2 CEUs A CEU in Funeral Directing Ethics is being offered as part of Convention 3 Day Pass or Wednesday Fast Pass programming. 15 SEMINAR POLICIES AND PROCEDURES ACCREDITATION All seminars are accredited through the New Jersey Funeral Service Education Corporation (NJFSEC). The NJFSEC Board of Trustees evaluates each seminar to ensure quality and relevance to funeral service. CONVENTION 3 DAY PASS Unless noted otherwise, all Convention seminars have been approved for 1 CEU from the New Jersey State Board of Mortuary Science and.1b CEU from the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice (APFSP, Provider #1022). All seminars have also been submitted for 1 CEU each to the appropriate licensing authorities in Florida (Provider #7002), Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania (Provider #000026) and Virginia (Provider # ). Seminars that are approved by the APFSP are recognized by the licensing authorities in Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island. Licensees in states not listed here should contact their licensing authorities for individual CEU approval, if applicable. NJ MANDATORY CEUs Unless otherwise noted, all NJ Mandatory seminars have been approved for 1 CEU from the New Jersey State Board of Mortuary Science and.1b CEU from the APFSP. CONTINUING EDUCATION VERIFICATION POLICY All attendees receive a barcoded badge at check-in. The badge must be worn at all times. It will be scanned at the beginning and end of each seminar, and any time attendees exit or enter the seminar room. The NJFSEC will not grant CEUs to attendees who miss more than 10 minutes of instructional time during a one-hour seminar or who miss more than 15 minutes of total instructional time during a two-hour seminar. There are no exceptions. Completion of a program examination may be required for issuing continuing education credit. A continuing education certificate will be mailed 30 days following the last seminar presentation on Thursday, September 27, REFUNDS Requests for Convention refunds will be honored by the NJSFDA until Friday, October 5, A $25 cancellation fee will be deducted from all refunds. Convention Party ticket purchases are nonrefundable. Requests for NJ Mandatory refunds will be honored by the NJFSEC until Friday, October 5, A $10 cancellation fee will be deducted from all refunds. 16 NON-EXHIBITOR SOLICITATION PROHIBITED Solicitation is only permitted by registered vendors during scheduled Exhibit Hall hours. Non-exhibiting companies are prohibited from reserving meeting rooms, event suites or holding any event targeted to attendees during the Convention. Non-exhibiting companies and their representatives are not permitted to solicit within the Exhibit Hall, seminar rooms, other Convention scheduled programming or the NJ Mandatory CEU Event. The NJSFDA further prohibits solicitation of business in any public areas occupied by the Convention, including public areas in the hotel, meeting rooms, suites and restaurants. Violators will be required to cease current activities and will be subject to full exhibitor rental space fees. In addition, such conduct may result in the removal of all violators from the hotel premises. PHOTOGRAPHY RELEASE AND DISCLOSURE All photography, video and audio recordings captured by the NJSFDA or any of its affiliated entities are the property of the NJSFDA. The NJSFDA reserves the right to use and distribute such images and recordings at their sole discretion. Participation by the attendee, guest or representative constitutes permission for the NJSFDA to capture and use such images or electronic recordings.
