3 2013/2014 TESTING INFORMATION by Lance Smith, Dean of Students Fall AIMS Testing in October is only for Juniors and Seniors needing to pass AIMS for graduation purposes or for those students attempting to exceed the standards on AIMS. There is no make-up testing allotted for the fall, therefore, it is imperative that students needing to pass are present during testing days. Spring testing for AIMS Writing, Reading and Math will include ALL 10th graders, as well as ALL 9th graders, who will be taking AIMS Science and the Stanford 10 Test. 6 SECOND ANNUAL HIGHLAND HIGH SCHOOL HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE Highland High School FCCLA/TOYBOX and FFA are hosting the Second Annual Highland High School Holiday Boutique on Saturday, December 7. We are currently looking for craft and gift vendors. If you, or someone you know has items they would like to sell, please complete the form on page 7. The fee to participate in the Boutique is $25 per space and will go to support activities for both of the student groups who are sponsoring the event. In all fairness to each vendor, we will only allow one vendor per company. For example, we will only have one Gold Canyon Candle vendor. If you do not have anything to sell, we hope you will come and do some holiday shopping at Highland High on December Years and Counting.... 8 SEPTEMBER HAWKS OF THE MONTH L-R Kalina Casas, Juli Horvath, Christina Johnsen HIGHLAND HIGH SCHOOL CHESS TEAM For the first time in eight years, the Highland Chess Team qualified for the state championship on November 1 and 2. The team tied for third in the region with a record of six wins, two losses, and a tie. Congratulations to the following players: Tesah Barton, Avi Brahmbhatt, Charles Daggs, Nathan Foote, Ammon Gilliland, Jesse Kimble, Quinn Mahony, Vikram Meyyappa, Dhruv Patel, Ahnaf Rahman, Patrick Schaffer, Matt Thompson, Kyle Van, and Tyler Welker. 9 HEALTHY HAWK TALK What? October is the month the Health Office will be conducting Hearing Screenings on all 9 th grade students. Our district actively participates with the Hearing Conservation Program of Arizona to identify students who may be at risk or experiencing a hearing loss. Our goal is to ensure our students are healthy and are not hindered by a hearing loss in the classroom. Activities that put your hearing at risk include: playing with noisy toys, band instruments and video games; listening to personal music players and stereos at high volumes; attending concerts and movies; operating lawn mowers, leaf blowers, chainsaws, firearms, fireworks and riding off-road vehicles. As a rule, noise may damage your hearing if you are at arm s length from it, or if you have to shout to make yourself heard. In a survey of teen listening habits, nearly 200 teens reported their typical listening volume levels as medium to high because they like the sensation of tuning out the world via total immersion in music. (House Ear Institute Survey, 2005) More than half of high school students in the U.S. report having at least one symptom of hearing loss. (ASHA Survey, 2006) 5.2 million 6-19 year olds have hearing loss directly related to noise exposure. (3 rd National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, Niskar et al. 2000) Humans are highly social and rely on communication to keep us connected to friends and family. Hearing loss interrupts communication and interferes with those relationships, which can result in depression, withdrawal, reduced self-esteem and self-worth. By practicing hearing conservation strategies diligently, you can prevent these negative outcomes of noise-induced hearing impairment. So, do yourself a favor. Turn it to the left-turn down the volume! Be safe not sorry-wear hearing protection! Walk away from noise! In good health, Helen Sandrolini RN BSN Christie Crecelius HA PARKING IN FIRE LANES It is important that students, parents and other visitors remember that it is against the law to park a vehicle in a fire lane. That goes for any fire lanes on the campus. We are asking all drivers that come onto campus to recognize where fire lanes are and avoid parking in these areas. This also goes for the front drop-off area. It is appropriate to drop off students in the drop-off area, but if you need to run into the building for any reason, please pull into a visitor parking spot. Leaving your vehicle in a fire lane is against the law and may result in a fine. We appreciate your understanding and adherence to the law. Page 9
