Under the direction of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, over two years of planning and construction of the 72 acre campus took place before the front doors were opened to the first freshman class of 131 boys and 108 girls. Twelve faculty members comprised the first teaching staff, which included one lay teacher. Since opening its doors over 50 years ago, Marian s dedicated faculty and staff has served over 7,000 students from Mishawaka, South Bend, Granger, Goshen, Elkhart, Plymouth, and more. Our current enrollment has grown from that first class of 239 to 700 students, and our faculty and staff has grown to over 100. Marian s blue and silver were chosen by the first class on the first week of school, and our colors run true to this day. The school has utilized AdvancED s Continuous Improvement Process to enhance student learning. Currently, we are in process of utilizing the North AdvancED Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (AdvancED CASI) process to enhance both teacher and student performance. Graduation Requirements Marian High School requires 49 credits to graduate. This combines the Indiana State Department of Education s requirement of 40 credits with additional credits in Theology, Computer Science, and electives. School Choice Scholarships (Vouchers) Indiana s School Choice Scholarship (Voucher) Program allows eligible families to use the portion of state funds that would have been spent on their children in their assigned public school district to attend a private school that has opted to participate in the voucher program. Marian s Business Office staff is available to help parents determine if their families are eligible for a School Choice Scholarship and to help eligible families file the paperwork to receive the scholarship. 4 Catholic Identity at Marian We Are One In the Spirit Collette Cline Class of 2021 I attended St. Matthew School from grades K-8. It was an easy decision for me to choose Marian for my high school education, but at the same time, I knew that I had other big important decisions to consider. After all, a big part of growing up is figuring out who I am and what I should do with my life. Thankfully, all of the students at Marian are asking these questions and seeking answers. We are part of a strong community building our relationship with Jesus. At Marian, this effort is led by a Chaplain, our Christ-like mentor who encourages and prays with all students. He is assisted by a Campus Minister, the Principal, the Dean of Student Formation, and the teachers. The students build their relationship with Jesus by meeting Jesus face-to-face in the sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation and by actively participating in their Theology classes, joining clubs like Campus Ministry, Right to Life, and Vincentians, and by sharing friendships. Marian is not just a school, Marian is a family whose members want all that is good for one another and who assist each other along the road to sainthood and to heaven. It is our primary focus at Marian to find meaningful and innovative ways to continually incorporate the Sacramental life of the Church, our rich faith tradition, and Catholic culture into every aspect of education at Marian High School. The Sacraments The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian Life; therefore, participation in the Sacramental life of the Church flows from our celebration of the Eucharist and flows back to that very celebration. Marian High School invites all members of our community to participate regularly in the Sacramental life of the Church with all-school Masses, all-school Penance services during the seasons of Advent and Lent, and multiple opportunities for daily Mass and Confession each week. Additionally, students have opportunities to celebrate Mass with members of their school clubs or sports teams. We also offer RCIA classes for teens interested in being initiated into the Catholic Church or who simply desire a greater understanding of Catholicism. All of these opportunities work together to place Christ at the center of the individual and at the heart of our community. Campus Ministry Campus Ministry at Marian High School provides opportunities to enrich the spiritual lives of our students, faculty, and staff. Following our Lord s command to, Go into all the world and proclaim the Gospel to the whole of creation (Mk. 16:15), we foster Christian discipleship by helping one another to pattern our lives after the example of Jesus. 5 Catholic Identity Continued Prayer Life If the person who prays is the theologian, and if theology is truly faith seeking understanding, then prayer, in all its various forms, guides the Christian on his or her path to holiness. At Marian High School, all are invited to actively participate in a life of prayer filled with richness and diversity. Our daily routine of prayer integrates aspects of the Liturgy of the Hours, readings from and reflections on Sacred Scripture, writings of the Saints, and great prayers from the Catholic Tradition. Each month, our prayer focuses on a different spiritual theme, and every day begins with an invitation to live out the Christian life according to that theme. In addition, plentiful opportunities for prayer and fellowship abound through Lunchtime Bible study, weekly Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplets, class retreats, adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, weekly Knight Life meetings, and Theology on Capp. Our life of prayer enables us to more fully enter into one another s lives, and thus enter more fully into the life of the Church and into the very life of God. To put out into the deep is to go out of ourselves and our own small world, and open ourselves to God and what He can do. 6 Academic Excellence at Marian Learn Mallory Spiess Class of 2016 Since graduating from Marian High School as a member of the Class of 2016, I have continued my education at the University of Notre Dame. As a dual-degree candidate in Business Administration in Marketing and Photography, I have been able to use the skills I gained at Marian to further advance my academic career. The high standards that I was held to at Marian and the resources that I was given to meet those standards have helped me to succeed in the highly-demanding environment at Notre Dame. In regard to both academics and extracurriculars, my experiences at Marian prepared me to balance my time and succeed in multiple areas of collegiate life. Marian did more than just prepare me academically: it gave me the opportunity to find my true passion in photography and the encouragement to pursue it, the drive to succeed, and the desire to give back to my community. At Marian, I was able to grow in multiple areas of my life and was well prepared to be successful in college and beyond. In the next two years, Marian will be adding two additional year-long courses in STEM Curriculum Marian is also proud to offer a curriculum based on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) principles through a partnership with Project Lead the Way. Presently, Marian offers a Computer Science and Software Engineering course to students who work throughout the year on APP development for mobile this STEM curriculum. College Credit Opportunities Marian is pleased to offer a wide variety of opportunities for students to earn college credit while completing courses at Marian High School. These challenging courses assist students in meeting the state requirements for the Academic Honors Diploma, as well as preparing them for rigorous academic work at colleges and universities. Advanced Placement (AP) courses provide students the opportunity to earn college credit at colleges and universities across the country. Credit is determined by the college or university based upon a student s score on the AP exam given in May of each academic year. Marian also offers college-level classes to students while still in high school. Dual Credit courses are provided through a partnership with IUSB and IVY TECH. This partnership provides students with a college level course at no additional cost to the student or family. 7 Academic Excellence Continued Arts As a means of encouraging all students to think critically, express themselves with thoughtfulness and creativity, and to learn to appreciate various cultural and historical perspectives, Marian is proud to offer a wide variety of Liberal Arts courses and co-curricular clubs that will prepare students to excel in college. Throughout their education at Marian, students are challenged by a first-rate English sequence, which provides students two opportunities to take courses for AP credit. Students also have the opportunity to take art classes in our incredible Fine Arts department, which offers courses that range from performing arts to visual arts. Students in these classes regularly place in regional and national competitions, including the National Scholastic Art Awards in New York City. Marian students may choose to take one of the four-year sequences of World Languages, which includes Latin. Additionally, Marian students have the opportunity to take electives that enrich a traditional social studies curriculum, including Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology. Sciences Marian is proud to offer classes in science, business, and mathematics that are second to none. For many years, Marian students have led the region in recognition and awards from regional, state, and international science fairs. Marian s Advanced Research Course allows students to work cooperatively with local professors on college and university campuses, investigating real-world problems through scientific study. Marian annually partners with the University of Notre Dame s QuarkNet Laboratory where students and professors conduct research for CERN s Large Hadron Collider. Students also have the opportunity to take three AP mathematics courses including Statistics and Calculus. Those students interested in corporate professions may pursue their interests in Business classes such as Business Law, Marketing, and Accounting. Students can also spend some of their time outside the classroom participating in academic clubs such as Science Olympiad, Robotics, and Quiz Bowl. 8 Working For Good at Marian Serve Hunter Renner Class of 2020 I grew up attending St. Monica Parish and Mishawaka Catholic school. This started my journey in service to others, but Marian High School has expanded my opportunities to serve my school, the local community and the Church. I am a member of the Marian Student Council, and we sponsor a variety of events for students, including the Hunger Bowl, Homecoming Week, and Eric s Promise. Students also support local causes by donating food for needy families and by collecting items for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Each fall the entire school goes into the community for a day of service, working for local charities, such as REAL Services, La Casa d Amistad, Hannah s House, St. Paul s Retirement, Women s Care Center, and more. It is so gratifying to see the faces of all of the people who are helped. It makes us proud to be a part of the service done by the Knight Nation. Marian s faculty, staff, and students are great role models for balancing excellent academics and genuine service to others. Marian has taught me that simple things can bring joy, hope, and big changes to people s lives. I am a part of the Marian family and I am proud to be learning, serving, and leading. This happens primarily because of the very way in which the educational mission of Marian is different than that of secular schools. 9 Working for Good Continued Serving Each Other While public service to the community and to the Church is necessary and important, there are also less noticeable ways in which Marian students serve one another daily. Numerous clubs and organizations within the school, all overseen by Marian s Dean of Student Formation, work to support and inspire the building up of the Marian student body. Student Government The elected student leaders collaborate with members of the student body and the administration to coordinate class and all-school events. Science Olympiad There are over 7,000 teams in all 50 states who take part in rigorous standardsbased challenges in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Student Ambassadors Help to orient and acclimate new, transfer, and prospective students and their families to Marian High School. Homework Help Teachers and students volunteer their time and staff after school study tables for students seeking help with homework. Campus Ministry Leaders Students gather to share spiritual testimony and to pray for one another and members of the school community. Homeroom Tutoring NHS students provide homework help for freshmen who need assistance in mathematics and English. NHS Tutoring Members of the National Honor Society provide academic support after school, M-TH, for any student seeking additional assistance. Pep Club Fosters school spirit and student participation through events such as pep assemblies, intramural activities, and competitions. 10 Triumphant In The Fray at Marian Lead Michael Baughman Class of 2020 I have been a member of the Marian boys soccer team for two years. Coach Ben Householter (aka Coach House) has been a phenomenal coach, teacher, and leader. He was awarded the NIC Coach of the Year Award in He is a proven winner who works tirelessly to get our team to become the best we can be and to reach our full potential. Under his leadership, the boys soccer program won back to back state titles. The team is not just a collection of individuals but truly a family that works hard together, challenges each other, and supports one another. Being a member of the Knights soccer team has helped me gain both knowledge and confidence necessary to overcome any obstacles that may rise up in the future. Choosing to play soccer at Marian has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. At Marian, our athletic program is an important vehicle for furthering the mission of the school and for teaching life lessons that transcend the classroom. Through their involvement in our athletic teams, Marian student-athletes learn how to make a commitment, to put team before self, to sacrifice for a common objective - to lead. It is our goal that our studentathletes enjoy an authentic team experience that serves as a model for their future endeavors. Students develop spiritually, academically, socially, and physically. Our rich athletic tradition has been an important part of the total development of outstanding men and women. Principal, Mark Kirzeder taught Physics and Math at Marian for nine years and served as Assistant Principal before becoming Principal in He strives daily to ensure that the Catholic faith is imparted in all aspects of our school. Assistant Principal, Anne Brusky, came to Marian with seven years experience serving schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago. A graduate of the ACE Program at Notre Dame, Ms. Brusky is working to further the mission of Marian High School by bringing insight and innovation from her vast experience teaching and leading in Catholic Schools. Dean of Student Formation, Ryan Dainty, is the first to hold this position at Marian. Equipped with a Master of Divinity Degree, Mr. Dainty is able to fulfill this role in a pastoral manner, bringing discipline under the gospel and formation at the heart of all of his interactions with students.
