1 Instructional Leadership Innovation Does Not Happen in Isolation April 4, 2018 by George Couros In The Innovator s Mindset, I share the following eight characteristics: May 2018 Edition What is important to understand regarding these characteristics is that none of them make you innovative in isolation. It is their combinations that lead to new and better solutions. If I a observant and understand the world around me, yet create nothing, what would be solved? Flip it though; if I am creating without understanding the context of where I work and who I serve (observant), you might be creating solutions to things that is helpful to no one. This thinking was sparked by a post I recently read that was written by Mrs. Krolicki, talking about the importance of reflection leading to action: To read more please click on the link: Announcement Please Note: You can find more information on our department website:

2 Page 2 Tech News Blackboard Classroom SISD s LMS The Socorro ISD Technology Advisory Committee (TAC) has completed its review of multiple Learning Management Systems (LMS) over the course of a year and have concluded that Blackboard Classroom is the best choice to move our district forward in our goal of producing Future Ready graduates. This Blackboard Classroom will provide district staff, students, and parents a platform to leverage the many digital tools and resources in our district by placing them in one location, making them easily accessible, interoperable, and drives more personalized content to all stakeholders. Being online and with adaptive capabilities, users will be able to access the Blackboard Classroom LMS any time and on mobile devices. For the school year, Blackboard Classroom will be implemented at high schools, with middle school grades in and district-wide implementation in High schools will be receiving additional information during campus visits scheduled with our Instructional Technology team. Thanks goes out to all of campus TAC members for their involvement in the LMS Review process! DNA Conference July 25, 2018 Eastlake High School We are pleased to announce that the 2018 Digitally Nurturing Academics (DNA) Conference will also serve as the event at which Dr. Jose Espinoza, Superintendent of Schools, will welcome back all Team SISD teachers for the school year! There will be two sessions during which Dr. Espinoza will address our team, propelling them into a day full of learning, sharing, and growing together in our capacity as educators to use the district s digital investments to unleash A Universe of Possibilities for our students! In preparation for the conference: Please remind staff that arrangements have been made for busses to transport them from your campus to the conference and back, due to the limited parking available and the anticipated congestion due to construction on Eastlake Boulevard from I-10 up to and past Peyton Road. Lunch will also be provided on-site for all attendees. We encourage everyone to download the Eventleaf Guide app on their smartphone to be able to access their schedule after they have registered for the event. The Instructional Technology team will be meeting with campus staff to provide an overview of the conference and provide guidance for registering for the event to select their sessions for this great day of professional #SISD_DNA18 #TeamSISD #FutureReady #SISD_OCB

7 Page 7 Science News SISD Science (K-12th) Academic Vocabulary Streamlined TEKs Academic vocabulary refers to the words associated with content knowledge. Within science, there is a specific set of words that represent concepts and processes. These words are conceptually more complex than everyday language; therefore, they are more difficult to learn. Lead4ward has a list of academic science vocabulary words per grade level. This list includes new words, previously introduced words and related words per TEK. Academic Vocabulary - click on the grade level and science under the academic vocab column. The State Board of Education gave final approval in April to streamlined science standards for kindergarten through high school. Streamlining eliminates, clarifies or combines some standards without adding additional content. Click on the links below to view the side by side documents by grade level that we will be analyzing at our content meetings. Elementary Stemscopes Re-TEKs Middle School High School Don t forget that all 5th, 8th and Biology Teachers have access to the Stemscopes RE-TEKs. Thank you all, for your passion, commitment and most of all, your undying work ethic, to all of our students with special needs. Each training date is restricted to ONLY 40 PARTICIPANTS, therefore it is best to register early. It is also recommended that if a campus plans to train a large number of people, they stagger their staff to attend different training dates throughout the year. What Teachers Should Know and Do: Meet with your General Education Teachers in order to: - Interpret the IEP. - Review accommodations/modifications/plaafps/ goals and/or objectives/bips and any assistive technology. - Create student/learner profile. - Make sure that ARD dates, for the year, are scheduled and communicated to the appropriate personnel. - Draft goals/objectives, which should be provided to parents 10 days before the scheduled ARD. 13 Page 13 State and Federal Programs DISTRICT/CAMPUS IMPROVEMENT PLANS: COMPREHENSIVE NEEDS ASSESSMENT What drives a district improvement plan or campus improvement plan? How is a vision developed by district and school leadership to make the district and our campuses better than they were before? * It all starts with the Comprehensive Needs Assessment! (CNA) * We are in full swing with the development of our DIP and CIPs. * What are our needs? How do we determine them? * How do our needs then become defined as our plan objectives and strategies? * How do our objectives and strategies become funded with our budget allocations? * CNA Multiple Measures of Data * Four Areas: Demographics, Student Academic Achievement, District Processes and Programs, and Perceptions. * What are the strengths of each of the four multiple measures of data> * What are the areas needing improvement in each measure? How are the problem statements and root causes analyzed and applied for each? * A Plan Will Not Work Unless We Do. *A CNA and a subsequent improvement plan is not merely a compliance piece. *A DIP and a CIP is a full illustration of the vision an entity has to raise the bar with respect to student achievement. *First things First: We will never be able to determine any other plan steps without a solid CNA in place! That is why this first step is so important and ample time is given for completion. *The CNA portion of the DIP and CIPs must be completed by May 25. As always, if you have any questions, call: *Dr. Adam Starke at *Oscar Leza at
