2 Dear Parishioners, This Sunday, we celebrate the feast of Christ the King which is the last Sunday of our liturgical year. At the end of a year, it is always good to look back and evaluate what went well, what can be improved, and what lessons we can learn from this. The Red Sox ended their year on a negative note. They did not have what they needed to go deeper into the playoffs. As a result, they are now evaluating what they need to be more competitive for the next season. Is it more pitching, a power bat, a better bullpen, or a new manager? This should be our spiritual approach. What areas of my life need improvement? Is it more prayer time, improving some behavior, dealing with issues that are causing some stagnation in my spiritual growth? Where can I grow in my spiritual life and be a better disciple of Jesus? There is a story that one time a brother was complaining to St. Peter of Alcantára about the wickedness of the world, and the saint replied, The remedy is simple. You and I must first be what we ought to be; then we shall have cured what concerns ourselves. Let each one do the same, and all will be well. The trouble is that we all talk of reforming others without ever reforming ourselves. As we enter into a new liturgical year with the first Sunday of Advent, may we all have a spiritual game plan that will see us grow in our spiritual lives. A similar concept applies to our heart and mind. The fuel we give them each morning greatly affects the remainder of the day. Think of time in God s Word, prayer, and meditation as spiritual nourishment for your relationship with the Father. David began his day with the Lord. In Psalm 63, he described seeking God early (the literal translation of earnestly). He woke up ravenous for his Creator, and after filling his yearning soul with the fullness of the Lord, he broke out in thanksgiving and praise to Him. Even while lying on his bed at night, David was still thinking about his heavenly Father. Just imagine having a day like that filled with joy and gratitude to God. This is possible when we set apart the beginning of our day to spend with the Lord, listening to Him speak through His Word and talking to Him in prayer. Our blessing will be even richer when we stay mindful of God throughout the day and into the night, contemplating who He is and how He works. Seeking the Lord not only fills our empty soul; it also increases our hunger for more of Him. Do you find it a struggle to set apart time with the Lord each morning? Realize that lifelong habits begin with baby steps, not overwhelming resolutions. Start today set aside 15 minutes this morning. Then try doing so for a few days, and see if the Lord begins to satisfy your soul and increase your hunger for Him. ~ intouch.org 3

The show is Saturday, January 20 th at 7:00 p.m. in the parish hall and will be a great one! All proceeds benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Wakefield Interfaith Food Pantry. Tickets are $25.00 including dessert & coffee. Tickets can be purchased now by contacting Terry or Janet Altar Serving Training To all former, current and new Altar Servers at St. Joseph Parish, thank you for your service! Students considering becoming an altar server are asked to commit to a minimum of two years. New servers are always paired with an experienced server. Open to all students third grade and above. 5 Music Ministry The St. Joseph Children's and Adult Choirs will be hosting a bake sale the weekend of December 2-3. All of the proceeds will be used to support the Buy a Bed program through the Mission of Deeds. For every $90 raised, a local child will receive a bed (frame, box spring and mattress). Thank you in advance for supporting the Buy a Bed program. We hope to see you after Mass! The Music Ministry will not be performing a Christmas Concert this year, however, we will be providing music for the Holy Hour on December 17th from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 pm. Please join us on this 3rd Sunday of Advent as we pray, sing and prepare our hearts for Christmas. Franciscan Spiritual Direction Our parishioner, Kate Chandler, has completed a program of Franciscan Spiritual Direction, an ancient practice of one-on-one accompaniment that evolves through contemplative listening, presence and reflections, to help seekers discern the sacred presence of God in his or her unique and sacred journey. If you desire to grow in attentiveness to God s movement in your life and are seeking a deeper, personal relationship with God, Kate is available by appointment and can be reached at kate.chandler44@gmail.com. Religious Education Religious Education Class & Meetings Grades 3-6: On Sunday, December 10, 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. all Grades 3-6 parents and students are invited to attend the second of four school year meetings. Fr. Ron & Mrs. Sophia Griffin will meet with the parents and Mrs. Keith will meet with the students. Grade 1: Next meeting for parents and children of Grade 1 is on Saturday, December 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the parish hall. Boy Scout Troop 701 Christmas Wreath Sale This Weekend November 25-26, 2017 Boy Scout Troop 701 decorates and sells Christmas Wreaths each year in order to fund their meetings, advancements, and outdoor programs. Profits from the wreath sale, the troop s only annual fundraiser, are used to pay for camping trips, backpacking trips, rock climbing, zip-lining, scout camp, and advancement patches. Scouts will be selling wreaths here at St. Joseph s on Saturday, November 25 before and after the 4:00 Mass, and on Sunday, November 26 before and after the 9:00, 11:00 and 5:30 Masses.
