1 THE PHOENIX TRADITION ALUMNAE Over 150 players have taken the field for the Green Bay women s soccer program, including 55 four-year letterwinners. The women s soccer program proudly boasts many alums that have gone on to be impact members of their respective communities. Here is a sampling of alums of the Green Bay women s soccer program: Tonya (Greenwood) Allen, 95 Software developer, Data Recognition Corporation, Maple Grove, Minn. Green Bay s 1993 team went for its best record in program history. WOMEN S HISTORY Green Bay decided to add women s soccer to its athletics program for the fall of the 1987 season as a varsity sport. The team failed to muster a victory during that year, but its sophomore season in collegiate competition was quite different. The Phoenix went 12-4, including eight shutout victories and six wins by three goals or more on the way to an NAIA tournament appearance. Kari Polczynski ( ) The first six seasons for the Phoenix brought six different coaches, as the team looked to not only find continuity, but string together measured successes. It was in the 1993 season the team reached new heights when Green Bay posted a mark in Chad Johnson s first season at the helm. The Phoenix totalled 10 shutouts that year and an record over the final 10 contests. In 1996, current Phoenix head coach Quinn Ross followed Johnson s lead with a solid firstyear campaign. Ross guided Green Bay to a mark in his first season as a collegiate head coach, including a start on the year. While the team suffered setbacks that kept its win total down over the next few seasons, the 2001 Phoenix set a high standard in the league. The squad posted three victories against conference foes, which tied the total of league wins for the previous three years combined. In the past three seasons, the Phoenix has reached new heights both as a team as well as individually. During that span, Green Bay has reached the.500 mark twice and has twice advanced to the league championship s semifinal round for the first time in program history. Individually, Sarah Oligney was the marquee player in the Horizon League not once, but twice - earning the league s player of the year honor both in 2003 and She also became Green Bay s first-ever All-American for women s soccer with her NSCAA Scholar All-America recognition as a senior. Stephanie Gross followed Oligney s lead in 2006, earning First- Team Academic All-America honors. Meghan Dames, 00 School social worker, WC Petty Elementary school, Antioch, Ill. 2 THE PHOENIX TRADITION HOMECOMING Since 1988, the women s soccer team has entertained former Phoenix standouts during the team s annual Homecoming weekend. The alumnae of the program have embraced the yearly opportunity to gather with former teammates and cheer on the current Phoenix student-athletes. Homecoming weekend has brought success for the Phoenix women, as the team owns a record all-time in Homecoming action, including four thrilling overtime victories. One of those highlights was a 3-2 Horizon League win over Wright State during the 2001 season. Laura Beyer s 35-yard blast not only proved to be the game-winner, but was named the goal of the year by her teammates. Laura Beyer ( ) Over the past eight years, Green Bay has been victorious in seven Homecoming contests, including six against intercollegiate competition. Last year, the Phoenix defeated Northern Iowa, 4-1. SENIOR DAY The final home game of each season is dedicated to the seniors and their parents. Seniors are honored by their teammates, coaching staff and fans in a pregame ceremony at the center of Phoenix Field. The Phoenix women have had wonderful success in the final home game of the year as the team owns a record on Senior Day. Ten of the 16 wins the women have posted on Senior Day have been shutouts. Included on the team s list of Senior Day victories are many memorable wins. In 1994, the Phoenix posted its first win over Butler Natalie Brown ( ) on Senior Day with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory. Then, in 1999, the Phoenix registered a 1-0 win over in-state and Horizon League rival Milwaukee on a Meghan Dames 30-yard free kick in the 87th minute. Dames score was selected by her teammates as the team s goal of the year for KRISTIN SCHNEIDER MEMORIAL TREE The Phoenix women s soccer family suffered a great loss on Jan. 23, 2005, when Kristin Schneider, a goalkeeper from Fond du Lac, Wis., died in a car accident in Milwaukee. She was 22 years old. Schneider was a gifted writer along with her skills on the soccer field. The four-year letterwinner was the team s starting goalkeeper in 2001, where she had a streak of over 233 minutes of scoreless soccer. In her memory, contributions from Green Bay women s soccer alumnae, current players and friends and family of the Phoenix purchased an ash tree, which was planted at the south end of Santaga Stadium during Homecoming weekend in Plans are in the works for the addition of a memorial plaque at the base of the tree. I think it just hit me, the moment is gone what s lost is lost, what s done is done. They may not know but they ve touched my heart; closing my eyes for a fresh, new start. I miss the game, the smell of the grass screams from my coach, demanding a firmer pass. The sweat on my face, the ball in my hands the roaring and cheering from dedicated fans. Playing in hot August heat, working hard not to get beat. I ll never forget those four extraordinary years. It all was worth it; all the smiles and the tears. - Kristin Schneider GREEN BAY SOCCER 21

15 GREEN BAY COMMUNITY ABOUT GREEN BAY Green Bay, Wisconsin, perfectly blends big city amenities with small-town charm. Situated at the base of the bay of Green Bay at the junction of the Fox and East Rivers, the city of Green Bay is the hub of the Northeastern section of the state. The oldest settlement in the Midwest, Green Bay boasts a population of over 100,000 making it the state s third largest city (behind Milwaukee and Madison). The population of the Green Bay area, which includes seven communities, is estimated at 230,000. A water fountain babbles adjacent to Ray Nitschke Bridge in downtown Green Bay. Bay Beach Amusement Park is a popular stop during the summer months. INDUSTRY & COMMERCE Today, the Green Bay area is a healthy, diverse, industrial community. Paper and paper products, food and kindred goods, as well as non-electrical machinery are the major sources of industrial employment. Other businesses produce lumber, woodwork, office equipment, foundry products, brick, tile, sheet metal and awnings. Green Bay is the largest meat-packing center east of the Mississippi River and holds the title tissue paper capital of the world. GREEN BAY PACKERS On Aug. 11, 1919, Curly Lambeau organized a football team in a meeting of young athletes in downtown Green Bay. It was the humble beginning of one of the most storied franchises in professional sports: the Green Bay Packers. Nearly 90 years later, the Packers continue to steep Green Bay in success, as the team boasts more championships (12) than any team in pro football. The team s enduring success has merited Green Bay s nickname of Titletown. ENTERTAINMENT, CULTURE & ART Along with historic Lambeau Field, Green Bay s sports entertainment district includes the Brown County Expo Center complex and the Resch Center. The complex hosts concerts, Green Bay and pro basketball games, the Green Bay Gamblers hockey franchise and the city s arena football team, the Green Bay Blizzard. Aided by the city s early establishment, Green Bay provides ample cultural opportunities in, among other things, Heritage Hill State Park and the Oneida Nation. Green Bay also boasts the National Railroad Museum, Neville Public Art Museum and the Green Bay Botanical Gardens, which all add to the rich cultural and artistic opportunities in the area. Annual events and festivals bring everything from skydivers to edible arts to Green Bay each year. Celebrations run the gamut from the Tall Ship Festival along the Fox River in Downtown Green Bay to Celebrate Americafest the city s Fourth of July celebration. The Oneida Indian Pow Wow, the Brown County Fair, Artstreet and the annual Holiday Parade are just a few of Green Bay and Brown County activities to attend during the course of the year. CLIMATE Seasonal changes make Wisconsin special from crisp autumn mornings to quiet spring rains. The average summer temperature is in the high 70s with cool nights. Spring and fall have crisp temperatures. The area is known for its beautiful autumn colors, beginning in mid-september and lasting well into October. Winter is generally cool with temperatures in the teens, but Water activities abound on Green Bay. snowfalls provide the ideal setting for a variety of winter recreational opportunities including exceptional snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. * Information and photography provided by Green Bay Chamber of Commerce and the Packer Country Visitor & Convention Bureau. 34 GREEN BAY SOCCER

SPECIAL OLYMPICS Over the last 16 years, the Phoenix women s soccer team has fostered a strong relationship with the Northeastern Area of Special Olympics Wisconsin. During that time, the women s soccer team has assisted in every aspect of the Northeastern Area s annual soccer tournament held each spring at Ashwaubenon High School. Players serve as officials, timers and scorekeepers for the day-long tournament as well as assist with the awards presentation. For their dedication, the women s soccer team was recently named the 2006 Brian Ziegelbauer Memorial Youth Volunteer of the Year, an award given annually to outstanding volunteers of the Northeastern Area of Special Olympics Wisconsin. HURRICANE KATRINA During the 2005 season, the Phoenix made the most of its trip to Lafayette, La., for the McAlisters Deli South Louisiana Shootout at UL Lafayette. Arriving less than two weeks after Hurricane Katrina bombarded the Gulf Coast, the Phoenix had the opportunity to help people displaced from the storm. By working at the Salvation Army in Lafayette, the Phoenix made a lasting impact on the area. Players helped sort donations, including multiple duffel bags of their own clothing, as well as assist with paperwork and just putting smiles on people s faces. BIG EVENT FOR LITTLE KIDS The women s soccer team helps out annually for the Big Event for Little Kids, an event for youth of Northeast Wisconsin sponsored by Encompass Child Care. Players help run games, dress up as movie characters and share precious moments with area youth. PHUTURE PHOENIX Each fall, over 1,000 fifth-graders come to the UW-Green Bay campus to get a sneak peek at college life. The program, specifically for at-risk public school students, allows for the Green Bay women s soccer team and the rest of the university to serve as role models for the students. SOCCER CLINICS Throughout the year the Phoenix women s soccer program hosts various groups at the soccer fields at UW-Green Bay for soccer clinics geared specifically for them. For more information on how Green Bay women s soccer can be involved with your organization, contact Michelle Berei at (920) or via at bereim@uwgb.edu. 17 GIRLS SOCCER CAMPS The Green Bay Women s Soccer staff continues to support the growing interest in soccer in the Green Bay and surrounding areas with a variety of soccer camps and activities available within the Green Bay soccer program. The Phoenix Day Camp, which is open to all girls soccer players grades K-10, is the most popular camp provided by the women s soccer program. The Phoenix also offers a specialized pre-college mini-camp, which completed its third year in Participants enjoy a wide range of top-class soccer facilities, including use of six lush soccer fields, the Phoenix Sports Center including its Olympic-size pool, video analysis and multi-purpose gym. The cornerstone of the training area consists of two lighted, natural grass soccer-specific fields, used by Green Bay women s soccer. Other benefits for camp participants include a pass to all Green Bay women s home soccer matches, an opportunity to serve as a ball girl at home games, and many more benefits of being associated with the UW-Green Bay soccer program. Camp directors include Quinn Ross, head women s soccer coach, and Michelle Berei, assistant women s soccer coach. Green Bay women s soccer players also assist on the camp staff. For more information concerning camps and other soccer programs, call (920) or visit Green Bay Athletics on the web at Phoenix Fund The Phoenix Fund is the principle fundraising arm of Green Bay Athletics, responsible for raising funds, providing scholarship dollars for deserving student-athletes at the university. Each year, contributions to the Phoenix Fund directly impact the lives of over 230 student-athletes participating in 16 NCAA Division I varsity-level sports. Donations to the Phoenix Fund are essential to the success of student-athletes at Green Bay both in the classroom and in athletic competition. In order to meet the challenge of increasing scholarship costs, the athletic department is more dependant than ever on private gifts to assist in the success of the program. The Phoenix Fund provides an opportunity for all fans to get involved. With membership levels beginning as low as $125 per year, everyone can be a part of the team. The Phoenix Fund relies on gifts from many donors including alumni, friends of the University, businesses, foundations, and fans. Phoenix Fund members receive many benefits for supporting the program including a quarterly newsletter, updates of events in the athletic department, priority parking benefits and much more. Membership benefits are intended to thank contributors for their generosity and provide them with a direct link to Phoenix Athletics while giving contributors the opportunity to stay involved and well informed. However, the most important benefit is the pride and satisfaction gained from knowing that a Green Bay student-athlete has been given the opportunity to achieve success both academically and athletically. The Green Bay student-athletes, coaches and staff greatly appreciate the decision by the Phoenix Fund members to support scholarships through their contributions. Questions about the Phoenix Fund should be directed to Jeanne Stangel at (920) or via at stangelj@uwgb.edu. 36 GREEN BAY SOCCER

19 THIS IS UW-GREEN BAY REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCES UW-Green Bay has always been known for its emphasis on applied problem solving, and our facility members are working with students in these areas more than ever before. Over 75 percent of the students who graduated last year took advantage of at least one individualized learning experience. Thirty-five percent completed an internship; 41 percent did an independent research or honors project, or assisted faculty members in their research; and 34 percent completed a field experience or practicum. Many did all three. independent learning activities such as internships and individual research projects. You will be challenged to challenge yourself. FACULTY MAKES THE GRADE Students give their highest marks to UW-Green Bay faculty members for knowledge and expertise, quality of teaching and in-class student interaction. UW-Green Bay faculty members are in-tune and involved in global issues and local communities, and they insist that their students get involved as well. Faculty emphasize the best preparation for a lifetime of learning is in action, not just observation. UW-Green Bay emphasizes an interdisciplinary, or multiple-subject, style of education that applies knowledge from several fields. INTERDISCIPLINARY Interdisciplinary means across disciplines and it s the type of academic approach you will experience at UW-Green Bay. It means you will take supplementary courses that might be different from your major. Students interested in a career in music management might major in music and minor in business administration. These are two very different disciplines that help students to develop a better-informed and more flexible view of their own and others fields. LIFELONG LEARNING The new economy favors those who are skilled in more than one area, and have been inspired to think critically, be creative problem-solvers and develop strong communication and quantitative skills. They are lifelong learners. At UW- Green Bay, you will experience this emphasis across an array of lectures, labs, discussions, and At UW-Green Bay, the focus is on teaching senior level faculty members lead both entry-level and advanced courses but professors must also be active researchers, and often involve undergraduates in the entire process. This allows faculty to stay on top of the developments in their fields while challenging students with advanced material. Mary Ann Cofrin Hall is the largest classroom facility on campus. THE CAMPUS SCENE With nearly 2,000 students living within a five-minute walk from the main campus, the Phoenix Sports Center, the Weidner Center for Performing Arts, and one another, campus life is as action-packed as you make it. You can get caught up at a Broadway musical, go nuts at a Division I sporting event, let loose Students can participate in over 100 organizations. at an After Hours dance and take a stand at a political rally, all in the same week. Involvement in campus organizations offer social service and professional opportunities within the University and the community. REPUTATION AND EMPLOYABILITY UW-Green Bay alumni are highly successful at getting jobs and gaining admission to graduate and professional schools. Recent surveys have found placement rates consistently in the upper 90th percentile counting those who are employed or pursuing further studies. The success stories are broad across majors. ALUMNI AT WORK Graduating alumni are many times the best sources for current students in finding part-time jobs, paid internships, and career connections. More than 400 UW-Green Bay alumni are owners, CEO s, presidents, and corporate leaders in the region and around the country. LIVING WHAT WE WANT TO BECOME At UW-Green Bay, we are committed to the task of helping the next generation of business professionals, teachers, artists, scientists and civic leaders to experience diversity as both a value and a public good. We have a long tradition of supporting diversity in our curriculum, and in our service to the communities of Northeastern Wisconsin. 38 GREEN BAY SOCCER

During his first year as director of athletics in 2002, Bothof implemented a five-year plan that addresses departmental budgetary needs based on student-athlete safety, student-athlete welfare, gender equity, and Horizon League success. The result for Green Bay Athletics has been many of the benchmarks set out have been achieved, or in some cases, surpassed.
