2 From the rec director s desk: Welcome to the Hesston Recreation 2018 Spring/Summer catalog. It s all coming together. The past number of years are culminating in home openers on new fields, splashes and squeals of delight in new water features at a new aquatic center. Opening and introducing the amazing new recreation facilities is a testament to the commitment of the Hesston community in Harvesting the Good Life. The catalog is full of amazing opportunities provided by Hesston Recreation and the community for all ages and interests. Please take a moment to take in all the Hesston Community offers. Hesston Recreation is committed to providing the experiences of Fun, Fellowship and Fitness in all our activities and opportunity for everyone. Let s keep the activities we enjoy and find new ones. 3 HRCE OFFICE LOCATION & HOURS The Hesston Recreation office is on the northeast side of Hesston High School adjacent to Park Road. Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays and 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 Fridays. SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE Hesston Recreation is pleased to offer scholarship opportunities based on the following policy: Those on free or reduced-price lunches through USD 460 are eligible for a 50 percent scholarship. Those on KanCare Insurance will receive a 100 percent scholarship. There is a $75-perchild limit per fiscal year. Our fiscal years run July 1 through June 30 of the following year. No scholarships will be offered on pool passes. Proof of KanCare Insurance will be requested. LATE REGISTRATION POLICY Registrations submitted after the registration deadline will be assessed a $10 late fee. Late registrations are accepted based on space availability in the activity. Families that recently relocated to USD 460 will be exempt from the late fee. EQUIPMENT FOR LOAN Hesston Recreation has various types of equipment available for free loan to Hesston USD 460 residents and patrons. Check with us by calling to reserve these items: 5- or 10- gallon coolers, softball equipment, pickleball equipment and soccer balls. PHOTOS AT HRCE EVENTS By participating in HRCE activities, consent is provided to Hesston Recreation and Community Education to use images taken at the events for marketing purposes. If you would like to opt out, please notify Hesston Recreation at

4 HESSTON RECREATION & COMMUNITY EDUCATION Hop into the event on March 30 Hesston Rec and Golden Plains Credit Union will continue the longtime tradition of a community Easter Egg Hunt for children on Friday, March 30, The event is for children from toddler-age through 4th grade. The hunt will be at 10 a.m. at King Park, Heritage Park and Hesston Middle School. Various areas are reserved for each age/ grade group, and plenty of colorful Easter eggs and candy will be hidden so every little hunter goes away with a special Easter treat. Golden Plains Credit Union will give away Easter baskets at the hunt and have cookies and a drawing for a large Easter basket after the hunt at the branch, 140 N. Main St. in Hesston. Watch for more information in The Hesston Record just prior to Easter. HRCE also will distribute a flyer with details through the schools. 4

5 Youth soccer camp offered for 1st-7th graders The Hesston College women s soccer team and Hesston Recreation are teaming to offer a youth soccer camp for 1st-7th graders. Players from the successful Hesston College women's soccer program (21-15 over the last two seasons) and camp director Bryan Kehr (BA, MA) look forward to providing soccer skills training and small sided game experience to your child. Kehr holds a national coaching license from the National Soccer Coaches Association. WHO: 1st-7th grade boys & girls DATES/TIMES: The clinic will be on three Sundays: April 8, 15 and 22 The times are: 1st-4th grades from 1:30 2:45p.m.; 5th 7th grade from 3 4:15p.m. WHERE: Training will be held on the Hesston College soccer field. In case of rain, the training will be held in the campus activity center, which is built for indoor soccer. COST: $25 includes a team T-shirt and soccer ball. Parties will be scheduled at the pool office. *anyone entering the pool gate, swimming or not EXERCISE HOUR Monday-Thursday from 5-6 adults are welcome to come work out, lap swim will be available all days as well as water walking. Water aerobics classes may be offered on select days (check the website for more info). Parents are welcome to bring children who will be allowed to swim in the zero entry/slide area during this hour under the supervision of lifeguards and pool staff. See pricing under pool admission info. FAMILY SWIM Join us on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9. Children are admitted FREE with a paying adult. SEVERE WEATHER THREATENS Staff are trained to protect swimmers in severe weather situations. Swimmers will not be allowed to leave the premises on foot or bicycle during severe weather. Please make sure your child has a number where they can reach a ride in case of emergencies. SAFETY IS A PRIORITY The HRCE summer staff take every precaution to ensure all participants are safe in our programs. Although HRCE will not be held liable for accidents or injury, your assistance is vital to ensure a safe & healthy atmosphere. Parents should make children aware of rules. Patrons not obeying rules or pool staff 7 will be asked to leave the premises.

13 HESSTON SWIM TEAM REGISTRATION INFORMATION Hesston is a member of the Mid-Kansas League and welcomes everyone to be a part of the team. Renee Ewert and Jessica Unruh are the coaches. Those wanting to be on the team should attend a team informational meeting at 5 p.m. Sunday April 22, in the HHS main gym. Enter through the doors by Hesston Rec. Information will be sent home with kids. Requirements to be on the team: You must be 18 or younger as of June 1, All swimmers must be able to swim the length of the pool unassisted. PRACTICES/MEETS: First official practice is Tuesday, May 22. There may be open swim the week of May 14, depending on pool availability. Meet schedules will be distributed at the team meeting. WAHOO-A-THON: Monday, May 21, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Forms & information will be available at the team meeting. MINI MEET: Friday, May 25, 5:30-8:30 p.m. COST: $55 for lst child & $50 for additional children (comes with T-shirt and swim cap). We ll talk about the food groups, measuring, nutrition, how to follow a recipe, utensil use and kitchen safety. Please let the teacher know about food allergies after registering. WHAT TO BRING: Bring an apron to wear and a few to-go containers (in case we have leftovers!). CRAZY COOL ART: June 4, 6, 8, 11 & 13 DEADLINE: June 1 WHEN: June 4, 6, 8, 11 & 13 (Mondays, Wednesdays & first Friday) TIMES: 9-9:45 a.m. for 1st-2nd graders; 10-10:45 a.m. for 3rd-4th graders; 11-11:45 a.m. for 5th-7th graders WHERE: Hesston High School art room. Students will have an exciting time to learn new techniques in art. Boys and girls are both encouraged to take the class. WHAT TO BRING: Bring an old T-shirt or apron to wear. Some of these crafts are messy! SEWING FOR KIDS June DEADLINE: June 8 WHEN: June TIMES: 9 to 10:15 a.m. for 5th & 6th graders; 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. for 7th & 8th graders WHERE: Hesston High School FACS (Family & Consumer Science) room. Enter through the front doors of the high school and follow the signs. WHO: 5th-8th graders COST: $30 covers the major project for this one-week class. An information sheet will be ed to you after registration. It will include 2 options of small projects. Bring supplies for the project of your choice. You ll receive an instruction sheet in class. 20 PITCHING MACHINE PRACTICE For Rookie and Pony Boys And Girls Beginning Tuesday, May 22 The pitching machine will be available at the Hesston High School baseball field for batting practice according to the following schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays Rookie boys: Noon-1 p.m. Pony boys: 1-2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays Rookie girls: Noon-1 p.m. Pony girls: 1-2 p.m. Boys will hit baseballs; girls will hit softballs. Batting helmets are provided and there will be a few bats there. Bring your own bat if you like. This is a supervised activity and rules must be followed. It will continue through the end of our ball season as long as kids keep attending. MEN S SOFTBALL LEAGUE OFFERED Men s softball league play will begin in mid-may. Team registration information will be mailed to all of last year's team managers. Returning teams will be given preference, followed by new Hesston-based teams. COSTS: Basic fee $100; Hat $17.50 AGES: The league requires all first-year players, regardless of age, to submit a copy of their birth certificate or birth card. It can be turned into the Hesston Recreation office or you can bring it to the meeting on March 26. You must turn 12 before May 1, 2018, and cannot be 19 before May 1, 2018, to be eligible to play. 22 2018 SUMMER JUNIOR TENNIS PROGRAM Hesston Recreation will sponsor a junior tennis program for incoming third graders and older. Mark Dahlsten and Travis Sebits, Hesston High School tennis coaches, are the Junior Tennis coordinators. The program is USTA certified. The fee is $35 for the first child in a family and $30 for each additional child in a family. All the instructional and play dates will be at the Hesston High School tennis courts. Kinds of teams: Family team - related by blood or marriage Workplace team - employed by the same institution or who share common office space Special interest team - in the same club, church, etc. CERTIFICATION: A chip timing system is used for the race, which is a certified fast and flat course. CLINIC OFFERED AT HES Hesston Elementary School provides Bicycle Instruction for Kids Education and Safety (B.I.K.E.S.) each year to ensure all Hesston children who will ride a bike to school any time during the year will be licensed and informed about safe and responsible bicycling. In order to ride a bicycle to and from school, each child must earn a B.I.K.E.S. medallion and license. The clinic will be a part of the physical education program for 1st through 4th graders at the Hesston Elementary School in the fall. There will be no registration for this clinic at this time. 44 Hesston Junior Golf Play Days: -There will be 6 weeks of play days that take place on Monday mornings at Hesston Golf Course on June 4, June 11, June 25, July 2, July 9, and July 16. The make up day will be July 23 if we have a rainout. There will be a 3 Hole, 6 Hole, 9 Hole, and an 18 Hole Division based on each player's ability. Weekly Prizes will be awarded and season long standings will be kept. -For our younger players we would like to have a parent, grandparent, babysitter, etc. be there to help walk and keep score with each group. -Cost: $85 (This includes all play days, summer pass for the junior golfer, and a range pass) OR $30 (Just includes the 6 play days) Group Lessons: -We will be putting on group lessons for four weeks starting June 5 and going through June 27. These will take place on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning starting at 8:00 at Hesston Golf Course. Make Up days will be July 10& 11. -Groups will be made based on abilities. Please let us know how many years your son or daughter has been involved in the game of golf. We want to make the groups as even as we can in order to maximize instruction. -Items that will be covered during group lessons include grip, stance, swing, putting, & chipping. Our juniors will learn new drills that they can take with them to help with different parts of their game. -All instruction will be given by Grady Pauls and his staff at Hesston Golf Course. -Each lesson will take approximately 45 minutes. -Cost: $50 for four weeks of instruction. 46 Lovin the Real H-Town set for June It is time again for the 9th annual Lovin the Real H-Town Community Camp sponsored by Hesston Lions Club, Hesston Public Library and a number of other local organizations. Campers will tour a variety of Hesston businesses during the camp week, eat lunch at a Hesston restaurant each day and complete a community service project together at the end of the week. Camp will run Monday, June 18-Friday, June 22 from 9 a.m. -2 p.m. with each day starting at the Hesston Public Library. Camp leader is Susan Lamb. 47 Hesston Kids Konnect Summer Camp Hesston Intergenerational Child Development Center offers parents a daycare option called Hesston Kids Connect Summer Camp. We are open 6:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. The costs are: 5 days per week-$150/wk 4 days per week-$130/wk 3 days per week-$105/wk 2 days per week -$75/wk This includes breakfast, a hot lunch and a snack each day, plus field trips and swimming at our local pool. Children attending at least 6 out of the 12 weeks are eligible to participate in the free lock-in during August. We ll learn about many kinds of animals from different countries and even from our own back yards through scientific lessons, art projects, recreational activities, and exploration on field trips. The children will be able to display their knowledge they gain over the summer through art, games, reports/research, etc. at our End of the Summer Fair! 51 HESSTON PUBLIC FACILITIES AVAILABLE The city of Hesston maintains two park multi-use facilities which may be reserved by an organization or individual. These facilities are the Heritage Park shelter house and the King Park community use facility. These buildings are in great demand. Therefore, a reservation procedure has been established. 1. Reservations are to be made through City Hall during regular working hours. That phone number is Reservations shall be granted on a first -come-first-served basis. 3. Payment of rental fees must be made at the time the reservation is made. 4. Reservations will be taken for no more than one (1) year in advance. 5. Rental fees for park facilities are available through the city office. Rental fees will be refunded if the reservation is cancelled by notifying City Hall of the cancellation at least three days in advance of the rental date. Additional rental terms and agreements are available through City Hall.
