1 SECOND IN A TWO-PART SERIES ON STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AT CJC Chipola Volume XI, Number 5 May, 2003 FACTS An Accountability and Institutional Effectiveness Factsheet Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Named Nation s Most Distinguished One of Chipola s greatest claims to fame is its student achievement. Nowhere is this more evident than in Phi Theta Kappa, which continues to bring international recognition to the college and some of its most outstanding students. Chipola s Nu Chi Chapter recently won the academic equivalent of a national championship when it was named Most Distinguished among the 1,200 chapters in the international organization. At the annual Convention in Anaheim California, Nu Chi Chapter was named first in the nation and recognized for winning coveted Hallmark awards in all four possible categories: Scholarship, Leadership, Fellowship, and Service. Phi Theta Kappa sponsor Jody Spooner says most chapter activities centered around the Nu Chi Comprehensive Health and Wellness Project, which included numerous activities both on and off campus. Spooner says the total documented community impact includes 5,692 service learning hours, 8,843 people reached, and $9,630 raised or donated. The chapter s service project, A Day in the Life, challenged individuals on campus, in local communities, and across the state to donate a minimum of 24 hours of service to health issues of their choice. This project alone reached at least 400 Phi Theta Kappans, 700 college students, faculty and staff, 500 area high school students, 200 area community members. Volunteer hours were spent in a variety of projects, including tutoring and mentoring projects both on campus and across the college district, in healthrelated projects like the Great American Smokeout, during which members made and distributed Quit Kits to inform students and community members of health risks associated with smoking, and the End Poverty project which assisted needy families in the community. Spooner praised the teamwork on the Nu Chi Health and Wellness Project, which included an outreach topic for each month along with a type of cancer and general health issue addressing each topic. This plan guided the chapter throughout the year. Nu Chi Health and Wellness Project Month Outreach Health Issue Cancer Issue Sept. Children Pediatric Nutrition/ Dental Services Pediatric Cancer Oct.
