2 Page 2 THE FOCUS Greeters Needed for Both Worship Services Do you remember what it s like to visit at an unfamiliar church? You probably came in quietly and slipped into a pew (hoping that it wasn t someone s family pew where they ve sat for years). Perhaps everyone around you knows each other and they are having a great time visiting with one another, but no one speaks to you and your family. After worship is over, you quietly slipped back out the closest exit. If you ve had that experience, did that make you want to come back to that church? Probably not! Being intentional about warmly welcoming those who join us for worship is important for all of us to practice. Speaking to someone whose face you do not know and introducing yourself to them are such simple things and can make a huge difference in whether persons feel welcome or not in our church. But visitors also need information about our church, its programs and ministries when they visit. We need to know how to reach them so that we may follow up and invite them back, learn about their needs, and help them to become involved in the life of the church. That s where the role of the Greeter comes in. Greeters keep an eagle eye out for someone who may be worshipping with us for the first time and they are equipped with information about the church; they also seek to quickly gather a little information about the guests how to contact them, what they may be seeking in a church, and learn how we might bring them into our church family. If you would like to begin serving as a Greeter during worship on Sunday mornings, please contact Grace Phelps. Training and greeting materials will be provided. A friendly smile, a warm handshake, and a welcoming spirit are all you need to qualify for the job! Grace may be reached by phone at or by at GPhelps_fumc@bellsouth.net. Vacation Bible School July CHORAL REUNION PRESENTATION - Join us at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, in the sanctuary for the Covington High School and Byars Hall High School chorus reunion. FUMC s own Russell Phelps will be directing. THANK YOU Dear Rev. Tim Carpenter and Fellow Church Members, Sunday, May 1, 2011 will be long remembered and cherished. The members of our church family have been so kind and generous in honoring the High School seniors. The sermon, bible, expressions of love, food, video pictures and fellowship made me feel special and loved. I am proud of my church and hope that someday I will be worthy of all the good Christians of First Methodist Church, Covington. May God bless you all. Love, Bobby Bailey, CHS Class of 2011 Dear Church Family, I would like to thank you for your ongoing kindness and support. I ve really enjoyed my times here over the past few years. I appreciate the bible that was given to me and it will always serve as a reminder of my time here. I will appreciate your continued thoughts and prayers as I transition into school at VMI this fall. Dear Church Family, Thanks for everything, Adam G. McDuffie, MHS Class of 2011 Thank you for all your prayers, cards, calls, visits and concern before and after my surgery. Special thanks to Tim and Bill for their visits and prayers. Sincerely, Ted Turner
6 Page 6 THE FOCUS Bread of Life Feeding Ministry Update May 2011 Thanks to everyone who served and donated to the Bread of Life Food Pantry during May! We have been blessed with two substantial donations from the community at large this month. IPL Industrial Services in Brighton contributed over $1,000 worth of mac & cheese, cereal, pasta, peanut butter, and personal care items to the pantry. Thanks to owners Dale and Terri Smith and their daughter Noel Smith-Howe for their generosity. The Covington Manor Rehab & Therapy Team sold hot lunches prepared with help from their dietary department on Wednesdays during April and early May to raise $1,000 for us to purchase food from the Food Bank. Their administrator Scott Hurst and members of their nursing staff continue to be on hand every Saturday during pantry hours to do blood pressure and sugar checks for food recipients. Thanks for their commitment and generosity! 7 THE FOCUS Page 7 PEANUT BUTTER IS NEEDED FOR THE BREAD OF LIFE FOOD PANTRY! The shopping list from the Mid-South Food Bank has been very slim, offering no meats or any kind of protein. Peanut butter is a very important staple, particularly when meats are not available. Please drop donations by the church office or place in a cardboard box in the hallway going into the sanctuary on Sunday morning. Thank you for your contributions!
