1 June 2018 Cloverline 1 4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. Archery Program NEW Arts Camp Dairy Breakfast Fair News Foods & Clothing Revue Plant & Soil Science Day YQCA Training and much more! Our house is smack dab in the middle of a block with a lot of young families. It s not uncommon to see scores of kids riding bikes, scooters and skateboards up and down our block. We often see little legs being pulled by a brute of a dog on its walk. We hear the screams of joy and laughter that come from those outdoor games. And we also hear the screams of pain and fright when someone takes a digger in the alley. I ve learned to take stock in a variety of Band Aids. With a lot of summer plans come a lot of bumps and bruises and even some disappointments. People get sick, kids break bones, the weather gets nasty and sometimes the car breaks down. Our plans get pushed to the side or even forgotten while we handle those quick emergencies. How you show your resiliency in those times can be a great lesson for your kids. We are quick to tell them to get up, shake it off and try again, but do we model that behavior for ourselves? Showing them how we calmly handle adversity gives them the tools to bounce back quicker from their own disappointments. I certainly hope this summer doesn t give you or your family any lemons. But if it does, what a wonderful opportunity to make some lemonade. Have a beautiful June! Emily Crook Youth and Family Educator UW Extension, La Crosse County
