1 OHSAA FOOTBALL Weekly Release - November 13, 2016 Ohio High School Athletic Association 4080 Roselea Place, Columbus, OH Office Fax Facebook.com/OHSAA Contact: Tim Stried, Director of Communications, tstried@ohsaa.org Welcome to the Regional Finals! Regional boundary lines were drawn back in June, and now the championship games in those regions have arrived as the third round of the OHSAA football playoffs are this weekend. Division I, II, IV and VI games are Friday at 7:30 p.m., and Division III, V and VII games are Saturday at 7 p.m. The OHSAA has selected neutral sites based on the best available sites after a number of factors have been evaluated. The regional playoffs follow bracket format, with the top team on the bracket designated as the home team (see brackets posted at OHSAA.org). State Semifinal Pairings Later this week, the OHSAA will announce how the regional champions in several divisions will be paired in the state semifinals Nov The regional champion pairings in some divisions, however, will not be determined until after the regional finals this weekend. Note that state semifinal pairings are based on geography. Fifteen is the Number Fifteen of the 28 No. 1 seeds have advanced to the regional final. The playoffs began with 31 undefeated teams. Fifteen remain. Media Credentials for the Regional Finals The regional playoff brackets posted at OHSAA.org include the contact information for media coordinators at each site. Media are to contact the host site media coordinators before 3 p.m. Tuesday, at which time the media coordinators will determine approved credentials using the OHSAA s press box priority seating scale posted on the football page at OHSAA.org. Note that only Time Warner Cable SportsChannel can provide live video, and TWC has exclusivity of the games it selects (see later note). All other play-by-play video telecasts cannot begin until 11:30 p.m. Playoff Format and Schedule Unless otherwise noted, Divisions I, II, IV and VI play at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays during the playoffs, while Divisions III, V and VII play at 7 p.m. on Saturdays. Occasionally, that schedule changes during the first round is due to the host site having to share the stadium with another school (high school or college) or the site not having lights. In rounds two through four, any changes are typically due to a site hosting a playoff double-header. Of the four divisions that play their playoff games on Friday nights, one will be selected to play its state championship game on Thursday, Dec. 1. The other three will play their state championship games on Friday, Dec. 2. Divisions III, V and VII will play their state championship games on Saturday, Dec. 3. The OHSAA will announce the state championship game schedule for Divisions I, II, IV and VI at approximately 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25, while the championship schedule for Divisions III, V and VII will be announced at approximately 10 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26. The announcements will be made on the OHSAA s twitter account (@OHSAASports) and in the weekly release on Sunday, Nov. 27. In the Beginning to Seven Divisions When the OHSAA created the football playoffs in 1972, there were three divisions (called Class A, AA and AAA) and only one playoff qualifier per region (12 total playoff qualifiers). Now in its 45th year, the postseason has expanded to seven divisions and 224 total playoff qualifiers. Expansion occurred in 1980 to five divisions and two qualifiers per region, and then again in 1985 to four qualifiers per region. In 1994, a sixth division was added, while in 1999, the number of qualifiers per region increased to eight. The No. 8 seed will play at the No. 1 seed, the No. 7 seed at No. 2, etc. Regional Semifinals (Nov ), Regional Finals (Nov ) and State Semifinals (Nov ): Neutral sites are selected by the OHSAA. There are many factors that go into determining playoff sites, such as quality of field surface, seating capacity, quality of lighting, size of locker rooms and distance from field, press box size, parking spaces available, and a separate locker room for officials. After all those factors are taken into consideration, it must be confirmed that the site is available and willing to host a playoff game on the date needed. Ticket Information Fans are encouraged to buy their playoff tickets in advance at the participating schools, which keep a percentage of the revenue. For regional playoff games, tickets are $8 presale and $9 at the gate. Building on History See pages in this release for the playoff histories of each school that has qualified for the 2016 playoffs. Championship Games in Ohio Stadium After hosting the OHSAA state championship games in Columbus throughout the 1980s, natural grass was installed in Ohio Stadium in Columbus in the spring of 1990 and OSU asked the OHSAA to move its football state championship games to another location. The OHSAA found a home in Stark County, with Canton Fawcett Stadium and Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium sharing the state championship games for 24 years until 2014 when the finals returned to the Shoe. The current contract for the OHSAA football state championship games initially included two years at Ohio Stadium (2014 and 2015), and an additional year was added for 2016 due to the stadium renovations underway in Canton. There is currently no contract in place for the football finals after 2016, but the OHSAA intends to move the finals back to Stark County for 2017 and Setting Up the State Championships Since 2013, the time slots for the state championship games are not announced until the night of the state semifinals. Of the divisions that play their playoff games on Friday nights during the playoffs (I, II, IV and VI), one will be selected to play its state championship on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. The schedule for the state championship games is as follows: Thursday, Dec. 1 7:30 p.m. Either Div. I, II, IV or VI Friday, Dec a.m. Either Div. I, II, IV or VI 3 p.m. Either Div. I, II, IV or VI 8 p.m. Either Div. I, II, IV or VI Saturday, Dec a.m. Either Div. III, V or VII 3 p.m. Either Div. III, V or VII 8 p.m. Either Div. III, V or VII Defending State Champions All seven state champions from 2015 have advanced to the regional finals. They include Lakewood St. Edward (Div. I), Cincinnati La Salle (Div. II), Akron Archbishop Hoban (Div. III), Columbus Bishop Hartley (Div. IV), Coldwater (Div. V), Kirtland (Div. VI) and Fort Recovery (Div. VII). Consecutive Playoff Wins Not only did Maria Stein Marion Local reach the state championship game for the fifth-straight year in 2015, the Flyers set a new OHSAA record for consecutive playoff victories with 24 before falling to Kirtland in the Div. VI state championship game. Not far behind is fellow-mac member and four-time defending state champion Coldwater with 22-straight playoff wins. No. School Years * denotes streak is still active. Updated Nov. 13, Maria Stein Marion Local Cleveland St. Ignatius *22 Coldwater Youngstown Ursuline Newark Catholic Delphos St. John s Versailles Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller MAC Builds on Success The highly successful Midwest Athletic Conference is now 65-2 in first round playoff games against non-mac schools since the

3 playoffs expanded to eight qualifiers per region in (The two losses include a Versailles loss to Lima Central Catholic in 2005 and a Delphos St. John s loss to Arlington in 2014.) The MAC is against non-mac schools in OHSAA regional championship games. The MAC is now 33-7 in state semifinal games against non-mac schools. In 2014, the MAC became the first league to have three of its members win football state championships in the same season (Coldwater in Div. V, Minster in Div. VI and Maria Stein Marion Local in Div. VII). The MAC had won two state championships in the same season five times, but never three titles. In 2015, three MAC schools again played in state championship games, with Coldwater winning in Div. V and Fort Recovery winning in Div. VII, while Marion Local fell to Kirtland in Div. VI. Those three communities, all located in Mercer County, are all less than 15 miles apart. Hugging the Ohio-Indiana state line, Mercer County has a total population of 40,784 (as of 2013). The MAC currently owns 114 various OHSAA state team championships. Proving the Pollsters Thirty four of the 70 teams that appeared in the final Associated Press poll are still alive in the playoffs. Four of the seven teams that won poll championships are still playing, including Toledo Central Catholic (Div. III), Kettering Archbishop Alter (Div. IV), Wheelersburg (Div. V) and Maria Stein Marion Local (Div. VI). The final AP polls appear on page 7 of this packet. All 70 teams that appeared in the final AP poll earned a playoff berth. Those 70 teams went in the first round of the playoffs. Of those 58 wins, 55 were home games for the ranked team, while three ranked teams won on the road in the first round, including Trotwood-Madison (Div. III), Columbus Bishop Hartley (Div. IV), Swanton (Div. V) and Fort Recovery (Div. VII). Last year, the only teams to be ranked No. 1 in the final poll and go on to win a state championship were Lakewood St. Edward in Div. I and Coldwater in Div. V. Seven Make School History Entering the 2016 season, 70 OHSAA member schools had never made the football playoffs. That number shrunk by eight last week, as Hilliard Bradley (Div. I), Columbus West (Div. II), Akron East (Div. III), Bellefontaine Ben Logan (Div. IV), Cincinnati Aiken (Div. V), Lakeside Danbury (VIII), McGuffey Upper Scioto Valley (Div. VII) and Cincinnati Hillcrest Academy (Div. VII) all made the playoffs for the first time in their school s history. Last year, another eight schools made the playoffs for the first time, including Toledo Start (Div. I), Dayton Belmont (Div. III), Lewistown Indian Lake (Div. IV), Byesville Meadowbrook (Div. IV), Magnolia Sandy Valley (Div. V), Bidwell River Valley (Div. V), Bethel-Tate (Div. V) and North Jackson Jackson-Milton (Div. VII). The number of first-time playoff participants since 2000 includes eight in 2016, eight in 2015, 10 in 2014, two in 2013, seven in 2012, eight in 2011, six in 2010, 14 in 2009, 12 in 2008, 14 in 2007, 10 in 2006, 12 in 2005, 16 in 2004, 12 in 2003, 21 in 2002, 17 in 2001 and 26 in Since 1999 when the number of regional qualifiers was expanded to 32 teams per division and the first-round game has been played at the higher seed, 209 schools have made their school s first playoff appearance. In those games, the playoff newcomers went (.531) at home, (.129) when playing on the road and 3-10 (.231) when playing at a neutral site. Speaking of Making History... While eight schools made the playoffs for the first time, Newark Catholic has now made the playoffs for a state record 35th time. OHSAA PLAYOFF APPEARANCES 1. Newark Catholic, Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller, Ironton, Mogadore, Steubenville, 29 Playoff Streaks Coldwater owns the longest active streak of qualifying for the playoffs at 20 straight years. In fact, the Cavaliers have been to the state championship game the last seven years. Newark Catholic owns the record with eight straight title game appearances from followed by Cleveland St. Ignatius with six in a row from Until 2012, Columbus St. Francis DeSales had owned the longest active streak at 18-straight years, but the Stallions missed the playoffs that season. After Coldwater, the second-longest active streak is held by Mogadore at 18 straight playoff years. The all-time longest streak of consecutive years making the playoffs is 22 years by Cleveland St. Ignatius from 1988 through School Consecutive Years in Playoffs (Years) * denotes active streak Cleveland St. Ignatius 22 ( ) * Coldwater 20 ( ) Columbus St. Francis DeSales 18 ( ) * Mogadore 18 ( ) Akron Manchester 15 ( ) * Kettering Archbishop Alter 16 ( ) * Steubenville 16 ( ) Clarksville Clinton-Massie 14 ( ) Cin. Archbishop Moeller 13 ( ) First Round Success Two schools have an amazing success rate in the first round of the playoffs. St. Henry has been in the playoffs 16 times and is 16-0 in first-round playoff games. Cincinnati Colerain is 19-0, although one of its first-round games (1995) was later forfeited. In addition, three schools won their first-round playoff game nine straight years before losing, including Germantown Valley View, Mogadore and Newark Licking Valley. Week 10 Movers Many schools needed to win their final regular-season game to clinch a playoff berth. But several schools needed to win and get some help to vault into the Top 8 in their region after being outside the playoff field last week. The biggest movers were West Liberty-Salem in Div. IV, Region 15, which was 13th in its region last week, and Bay Village Bay in Div. III, Region 10, which was also 13th last week. Elsewhere, Dayton Belmont in Div. III, Region 12, was 11th in its region last week and lost its Week 10 game, but moved up to No. 8 due to forfeitures of another team. Blanchester (Div. V, Region 20), was 11th last week and moved up to eighth in the final ratings. Four other schools were 10th in their region last week and moved up into the playoff field this week, including Parma Heights Holy Name (Div. IV, Region 13), Jeromesville Hillsdale (Div. VI,

4 Region 21), Defiance Tinora (Div. VI, Region 22) and Canal Winchester Harvest Prep (Div. VII, Region 27). Welcome Back Several schools are back in the playoffs this year after being out of the postseason for several years. The logest of which is by Barberton, which is back for the first time since In 2015, several schools made the playoffs after long abbsences, including Burton Berkshire (Div. V, Region 15, last appearance was in 1981), Holland Springfield (Div. II, Region 4, last appearance was in 1994) and Swanton (Div. V, Region 16, last appearance was in 1995). In 2013, Norwalk was back in the playoffs for the first time since winning a state championship in Division II Finalists Continue to Be the New Kids on the Block When the OHSAA expanded the football playoffs to seven divisions in 2013 and made Division I smaller (including only the largest 72 schools in the state), one of the resulting effects was that many schools that used to be small Div. I schools were now in Div. II. Since then, many Div. II schools have made their schools deepest playoff runs. That began with Loveland in 2013 and continued with Cincinnati La Salle in Both schools not only won their first-ever playoff games those seasons, but went on to win the Div. II state title. That fact was evidenced again in 2015 as the Div. II state semifinalist Massillon Perry made its first appearance in the final four. Before the Playoffs Historians have found that in most years since 1895, the media or a specific organization named an Ohio high school football state champion. The Associated Press began its polls in 1947 and the OHSAA created the playoffs in The research of mythical state champions dating back to 1895 has been compiled on the football page at OHSAA.org.
