Together we ll explore the four steps of production: Fermenting, Distilling, Aging, and, of course, Tasting! Enjoy each of our hand-crafted grain to bottle spirits. This class offers a chance to visit our immersive, full-dome digital theater for a guided tour of the current night sky and an historic murder mystery that involves Abraham Lincoln, the moon, and an almanac! Presented by Ian Clarke, Hatter Planetarium Program Director and Adjunct Assistant Professor of English. FRIDAY JUNE 1 9:00 10:30 a.m. AC 208: The Supreme Court Justices: Politicians in Robes? When the New York Times columnist Linda Greenhouse retired from many years of covering the U.S. Supreme Court, she wrote a column, the gist of which was that she had always fought to avoid thinking that the justices were simply politicians in robes, but she was reluctantly giving up the fight. We will examine some past and recent opinions of the Court to try to make up our own minds the extent to which the justices are political, and explore whether or not it matters if they are. Presented by James Todd 65, Lecturer in Politics, University of Virginia. 9:00 10:30 a.m. AC 209: In Search of King Arthur: Echoes of Avalon in the Landscape of Britain If the legend we know as King Arthur ever did walk the earth, where in Britain might we pick up his trail? Ancient tales leave us clues more suggestive than they are definitive. The oldest tomes of Dark Age Britain are a patchwork of references to Arthur, his castles and forts, his

11 cities and capitals. Through the science of archaeology we may search the landscape for confirmation of these battlegrounds and battlements. But even science offers more intriguing questions than it does empirical answers. Still, with medieval manuscripts as our guides across the rolling hills and vales of Britain, we may begin to plot some points in the geography of Avalon. Furthermore, by delving deeply into the soil itself, we may capture glimpses, however fleeting, of the halls and walls that contained his fabled warriors. Drawing upon his forthcoming book Arthur: God and Hero in Avalon, as well as his Gettysburg College course of the same name, Professor Fee, will take us on a journey through the misty past of Dark Age Britain, illuminated by evocative images taken on-site in Britain in March 2017 by Fee and his research assistant Jerome Clarke 17 (Young Arthur to Fee s Aged Merlin!). Presented by Christopher Fee, Professor of English. 11:00 a.m. 12:30 p.m. SOLD OUT AC 210: Historical Highlights from Special Collections Special Collections, 4th Floor Special Collections and College Archives is home to an extraordinary variety of primary sources. Presented by Carolyn Huber Sautter, Director of Special Collections and College Archives. 11:00 a.m. 12:30 p.m. AC 211: Gettysburg College: A Lutheran College for the 21st Century Interfaith World As a Lutheran College, Gettysburg has a rich pool of resources from which to draw as it seeks to form its students into global citizens. Part of this formation includes wrestling with the big questions that involve religion and spirituality, which relate to individual identity as well as the identities of different cultures and societies around the world. This course will introduce these resources, invite conversation around this process of formation, and discuss some contemporary situations where these issues are particularly relevant today. Presented by Kristin Largen, Associate Dean Religious and Spiritual Life/College Chaplain. 2:00 3:30 p.m. AC 212: Stick it to em: Vaccination, Controversy, and Public Health Edward Jenner, HIV, polio, and Osama bin Laden are linked in history through vaccination. Since the development of the smallpox vaccine in the 1790s, vaccination has become one of the most significant contributors to public health. Historical controversies, government missteps, and scientific challenges in vaccine development require new approaches to develop and deploy vaccines to reduce the global burden of disease and death. Presented by Vincent Venditto 03, Assistant Professor Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Kentucky.

12 2:00 3:30 p.m. SOLD OUT AC 213: Tour of the Majestic Theater Majestic Theater Lobby You may remember the downtown Majestic Theater as a movie house. Presented by Jeffrey Gabel, Founding Executive Director of the Majestic Theater, and Jean LeGros 73, Alumni Director Emeritus. 4:00 5:30 p.m. SOLD OUT AC 214: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About French Wines but Were Afraid to Ask! A fun and interactive look at why France is always considered the standard of comparison for the world s wines. We will learn about the various French wine regions, grapes, styles, and food pairing ideas. Most importantly, we will taste a few exceptional values and answer questions. Presented by Kenneth Scupp 77, Co-owner Top Terroir, LLC. 4:00 5:30 p.m. AC 215: Stephen Warner 68 as a Typical/Atypical Representative of the Draftees During the Vietnam War The experiences of Stephen H. Warner, Gettysburg College Class of 1968, in the Vietnam War are in some ways representative of the quandary faced by many young men in the later years of the war. Those of us who shared those experiences were faced with difficult decisions as to what to do about the prospect of being drafted to serve in a war to which we were either opposed or were convinced was no longer winnable, or both. Steve was not representative, however, in the way he ultimately chose to resolve his dilemma. After vowing not to serve in Vietnam, he did so and voluntarily risked his life to make his time in there meaningful. As an Army Public Informational Specialist, Steve tried to emulate Ernie Pyle of World War II fame by writing profiles and stories about the common enlisted soldier. He was killed in Vietnam on February 14, 1971, while accompanying American combat engineers who were building a road to support the South Vietnamese invasion of Laos. We will revisit some of the lingering issues surrounding the war and the draft, as well as reviewing Steve's experience. Presented by Arthur Amchan, Attorney and Administrative Law Judge. Arthur is also the author of Killed in Action: The Life and Times of SP4 Stephen H. Warner, Draftee, Journalist and Anti-War Activist.
