2 GREETINGS FROM THE MCM TEAM I feel that if a person has problems communicating the very least he can do is to shut up. Tom Lehrer We don t want you to shut up. As people who make a living as communicators, we need you to speak (or write), loudly and often. We want to hear from you: about what we re doing right and what we re doing wrong; about how you plan to use your new capabilities; and about others that you think could benefit from this unique degree. Welcome to the DeGroote Master of Communications Management second residency program for First Years and fifth residency program for Second Years. You will notice that we ve made some changes and we think you ll like them. Enjoy your short stay! Erich Almasy Director of Executive Education Welcome back MCMers! In some ways it seems just a few weeks ago when we last met in 2 October and yet think of how much you have accomplished in a short four months. For the first year students, congratulations on your successful completion of your first term. We know how difficult it is to make the readjustment to academic life, what with all the APA style requirements, introduction to new learning technologies and lining up all those numbers in Excel! You have managed two graduate level courses and have had to deal with the effects of a difficult economy (and a crisis or two in between). Well done! For the second year students, you have entered the light at the end of the tunnel phase of your master s degree. You have once again survived a hectic term and now look forward to the summer when you can begin your capstone projects. This residency is a little quieter than the October residency our undergraduate and traditional graduate students are enjoying Reading Week giving us the whole place for our learning enjoyment. 11 DEGROOTE IN THE NEWS Burlington Campus Since its establishment more than 40 years ago, McMaster University s De- Groote School of Business has educated, mentored, challenged and engaged future business leaders. DeGroote is now preparing for the next phase in its successful history: the establishment of a new campus to be located in Burlington, Ontario. The proposed Centre for Advanced Management Studies will offer a selection of MBA and other graduate programs as well as executive education opportunities. Executive Education Programs The development in Burlington will provide Executive Education programs focused on leadership education and development for today s business leaders. Programs will deliver leading business concepts utilizing an experiential and innovative learning model, says Dean Paul Bates. Students will be armed with the tools, knowledge and skills needed to confront the challenges of a complex business world. An economic impact report commissioned by the City and the University found that the McMaster campus in Burlington will generate $38.2 million in overall annual spending in the city and region, while providing 400 total jobs that generate $32.3 million in total employment income annually.
