1 News Release 8820 Silver Hill Drive, Oklahoma City, OK (405) fax: (405) For Immediate Release Contact: Mike Schulte, Executive Director November 2, 2017 (405) Avery Fisher Wins Big at 2017 Oklahoma 4-H/FFA Junior Wheat Show Okeene, Okla. Avery Fisher, daughter of Clayton and Tara Fisher, was recently awarded the overall grand champion award showing her Bentley variety in the 2017 Oklahoma 4-H/FFA Junior Wheat Show. Fisher placed 1st in production and milling and 6 th in the bake contest earning her the title of 1 st place among the 4-H, 4-H champion and overall grand champion of the 4-H and FFA Junior Wheat Show. Fisher is a member of the Okeene 4-H club in Blaine County. Fisher accepted her awards at a recognition banquet held at the Oklahoma State University Alumni Center last night. According to Kim Anderson, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service grain marketing specialist; Participating students learn what it takes to produce milling quality wheat. He also stated that The purpose of this program is to promote the production of quality wheat and teach 4-H and FFA youth about wheat production, marketing, and management. Fisher received $2,000 in scholarship money for her accomplishments with her Bentley variety. Oklahoma Genetics Incorporated (OGI) presented a $750 premium on top of those awards to Fisher for winning 1 st place and then Grand Champion overall in the 4-H competition with the Bentley variety since it was an OGI Inc., release. Fisher also received a $500 premium for being 4-H champion and grand champion from WestBred. Fisher received a $350 premium from the Oklahoma Wheat Research Foundation, along with a $40.00 premium for production, milling, bake contest and trophy. Fisher also won 3 rd place with her Gallagher variety and will receive an additional $1000 in scholarship monies, $300 from Oklahoma Genetics Inc., $50 from Oklahoma Wheat Research Foundation and $25 in premiums for production, milling and baking contest. In all, $16,000 in scholarship money was given away at the
2 banquet. Scholarships are funded by Check-off dollars and awarded to the top five 4-H and top five FFA entries. The contest is sponsored by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, Oklahoma Wheat Research Foundation, Oklahoma Genetics Incorporated, Westbred and Oklahoma State University. The Oklahoma Wheat Commission works to promote greater utilization of wheat in both domestic and international markets through research, market development, and public education. Five wheat producers representing designated districts across the state serve as the Oklahoma Wheat Commission s board of directors. Jason Osborn, son of John and Karen Osborn, recently placed 2 nd overall in the 4-H division while showing his Bentley variety in the 2017 Oklahoma State 4-H/FFA Junior Wheat Show. Osborn placed 7 th in milling and production, 1 st in the bake contest and 2 nd overall. Osborn recently accepted his awards at a recognition banquet held at the Oklahoma State University Alumni Center. According to Kim Anderson, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service grain marketing specialist; Participating students learn what it takes to produce milling quality wheat. He also stated that The purpose of this program is to promote the production of quality wheat and teach 4-H and FFA youth about wheat production, marketing, and management.
