1 Volume 9: Issue 7, July 2011 Growing the tree of knowledge.one book at a time Calliope Puppets To Perform Across the Border Tuesday, July 12 at 10:00 a.m. Livingston Branch at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 13 at 10:00 a.m. at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 14 at 10:00 a.m. In a presentation which barely scratches the surface of the rich story and puppetry traditions of Latin America, Calliope Puppets presents three tales inspired by their travels in Central and South America. "The Singing Tree" is a beautiful myth explaining the origin of Guatemala's national instrument, the marimba. Then, in a story well known in all South America from Argentina's famed writer and puppeteer Javier Villafañe, "Juancito y Maria", the title characters prove their bravery and love. In the Mexican folk tale "El Tlacuache y el Coyote", the clever opossum Tlacuache tricks the trickster Coyote. Presented with traditional hand puppets along with a six foot tree and featuring Guatemalan marimba, Argentine tango, and Mexican La Banda music, this dynamic show is fun for all ages! This event is supported in part by funds from the Louisiana State Arts Council and the Louisiana Division of the Arts and by the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge through the Decentralized Arts Funding Program.
