3 TARPON WRANGLING IN NICARAGUA BSP resident traveler, Bill Buckner, and his band of five intrepid fisherman experienced an exciting week in the country of Nicaragua earlier this year and Bill has prepared a presentation to share with us! Nicaragua is just now becoming a tourist destination, having been depressed from 1960 to 1990 by revolution. It now offers tourists active volcanoes, ecotourism and sport fishing. The group s trip accommodations in the town of San Carlos were, as Mr. Buckner described, laughable, but the food was excellent and they were also accompanied by skilled and brave guides. But, we think it was Bill that was brave and skilled, as he wrestled a giant tarpon for almost one hour and he has the photos and video to prove it! Don t miss another engaging program from Bill s life adventures at 3:00 on Friday, March 17, in the. EXPLORERS OF OZARK MUSIC Betse & Clarke, a dynamic folk duo specializing in Ozark music, perform their masterpieces on fiddle and banjo. The classically-trained musicians have put as much consideration into folk music as each did with their formal educations. Betse Ellis, originally from Fayetteville, Arkansas, plays fiddle and sings and Clarke Wyatt, a Kansas-City-via-Texas gentleman, plays the banjo in an old-time, fingerpicking style. Betse has a music mentor centenarian Ms. Violet Hensley, well-known as The Whittling Fiddler of Arkansas. KCPT produced a video segment showcasing their friendship and a concert performance. Clarke is expert in his banjo technique, faithful to traditional melody and is able to take it further to surprising and innovative realms. Come meet the duo and tap your toes to Ozark music starring Bobbie Ellis daughter, Betse, with her friend, Clarke, at 3:00 on Friday, March 24, in the Madison Living Room. DR. CLAY M. ANDERSON ON BEING MORTAL In his outstanding book, Being Mortal, Atul Gawande examines his experiences as a surgeon as he confronts the realities of aging and dying in his patients and in his family, as well as the limits of what he can do. To view the PBS film based on the book and listen to commentary by Saint Luke s Medical Director of Palliative Services Dr. Clay M. Anderson, please join us at 3:00 on Wednesday, March 22, in the. NELSON-ATKINS PHOTO TOUR AND CHORAL EXPERIENCE The photographs of Dave Heath ( ) evoke an intense, bittersweet vision of modern life. Abandoned by his parents at the age of four, he grew up in Philadelphia foster homes and an orphanage. This sense of physical and emotional homelessness shaped his artistic vision. Join us on a docent-led tour of some of his classic black and white photographs on Saturday, March 11. The BSP bus departs at 1:30 sharp! We will also experience the gorgeous Forty-Part Motet by Janet Cardiff, an immersive musical installation that surrounds the visitor in a stunning choral performance originally written in the 1500s by Thomas Tallis and sung a cappella in Latin. 3

4 CHAPLAIN S CORNER In like a lion, out like a lamb! It s a catchy way of saying that March moves from winter blasts to spring breezes, but given our crazy weather this year, who knows? What we do know for sure is that March 1 is Ash Wednesday, which ushers in the season of Lent. During that time we contemplate the love and mercy of God made real for us in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. We ponder our lapses of love and mercy, and we ask for forgiveness and the grace to grow in both. Our Lenten Studies program is an opportunity to explore mercy, or forgiveness. As the Lord has forgiven us, we are called to forgive each other but we don t always know how to, or even want to. Barbara Crafton offers a series of DVD presentations on forgiveness, which we will view and discuss on Tuesday afternoons throughout Lent. Blessings to all for the observance of a holy Lent! Chaplain Kathy Hall CHAPLAIN ANNOUNCEMENTS Roman Catholic Mass: Father Bob Hagan will be here to celebrate Mass on Wednesday, March 8th, at 9:30 in the Chapel of the Epiphany. He will not be here on the first Monday of the month as usual, because that is Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday: There will be an Ash Wednesday service, including the distribution of ashes, in the Chapel of the Epiphany on March 1st, at 3:00. All are welcome to attend. Good Books: We will meet on the 4th Monday of March, the 27th, at 3:00 in the Chapel of the Epiphany. We will be reading The Return of the Prodigal Son by Henri Nouwen, available in print, electronic and audio formats. Please join us! Lenten Studies: Our studies will be held on Tuesdays, March 14th and 21st, at 3:00 and Tuesday, March 28th, at 11:00, all in the. Everyone is welcome! LUNCH & LEARN: FINAL OF OUR MODERN HISTORY SERIES The final (of this series) two 30-minute talks on DVD of Turnings Points in Modern History are followed by a group discussion that starts at 11:30 on Monday, March 13, in the. Lunch will be provided (for ten points), so please sign up with the concierge by Saturday, March 11, to reserve your lunch from PB&J Restaurants. MOVIE CLASSIC WITH CRITIC ROBERT BUTLER On the Waterfront focuses on union violence and corruption among longshoremen while detailing widespread corruption, extortion and racketeering on the waterfronts of Hoboken, New Jersey. 8 SPEAKER SERIES: CROSBY KEMPER, KANSAS CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY There is so much written about Crosby Kemper, but to quote KCUR Magazine: Crosby Kemper, III shares a name with his father and grandfather, and followed in their footsteps in running UMB Bank. Growing up as a Kemper meant meeting interesting people politicians, sports stars, artists and more. It also meant dealing with high expectations and assumptions from others. They assume that you re wealthy they assume great wealth with vast resources. They assume power; I m always amused by that in context of Kansas City. They also assume that you have knowledge of insider things that you may or may not have, he said. More accurately, Crosby grew up rich in opportunity and knowledge in Kansas City. His parents were avid readers and engaged parents, and their dinner discussion tended to revolve around books with trips to the encyclopedia to settle any arguments. But this was merely a start of this man s intellectual drive and cerebral pursuits. He stepped away from the family business in the early 2000s to become CEO of the Kansas City Public Library Foundation, followed by his appointment to Director of the Kansas City Public Library. We are lucky to have Mr. Kemper speak with us about the library and more at 3:00 on Tuesday, March 28, in the. THE RETURN OF ASHLEY COOPER! Consummate performer Ashley Cooper is back in town and coming to BSP. His show is part song, part dance, part ballet and part acrobatics. He has the look of a Rat Packer and the pipes of Nat King Cole as he dances and sings his way through the songs of the 40s, 50s and 60s with grace, class and a style all his own. It s always a treat when Mr. Cooper is here, so please come enjoy the music at 3:00 on Friday, March 10, in the Madison Living Room. WELCOME SPRING WITH A TOUR: THE QUEEN S GARDEN With permission from Her Majesty the Queen, this documentary reveals a year in Buckingham Palace Gardens, exploring the natural history of this hidden treasure in the center of London. The film uncovers a wonderland with a five-century history, an urban oasis of wildlife where the Queen has lived with her family and a living museum where almost every plant (and many of the animals!) has a royal story to tell. With unprecedented access, we will follow the garden s transformation across all four seasons, uncovering rare flowers specially bred for the Queen, extraordinary wildlife captured using hidden cameras and a vast lake with an island in the middle where the royal bees make honey, to name but a few of the treats in store. Let s ring in the first day of spring by enjoying the sights, sounds and visitors in The Queen s Garden at 3:00 on Monday, March 20, in the. BUS TRIP TO PRAIRIEFIRE The Museum at Prairiefire invites visitors to understand and celebrate natural history and culture in our region and around the world. 10 GARDEN TIME Susie Harman s bright yellow tulips last month reminded me that spring was on its way. This year it should be interesting to see what comes up in the gardens after last year s demolition and reconstruction. In the Bishop s Garden, so much soil was removed that it seems unlikely that any of the smaller plants survived. In the Memorial Garden, the Garden Committee is watching for signs of lilies, iris, surprise lilies, tulips, Dutchman s breeches, bugle, milkweed, bee balm, columbine, daisies some of these would usually be appearing by now. You may join us in keeping your eyes open to spot possible new beginnings.
