1 SAVE THE DATES SPRING 2017 CALENDAR January August 2017 The Urban Male Leadership Program at Lehman College 10 Years & Beyond Developing the Next Generation of Leaders
2 SAVE THE DATES SPRING 2017 The more I share my college experiences with the Urban Male Leadership Program the more the program appears as a second family. I am truly grateful I walked up to the UMLP table during orientation. If I did not engage with Euston Harp that day, I would have missed out a great portion of my experience at Lehman. The UMLP has increased my confidence and motivation in college especially as a Physics major. During the rest of my journey at Lehman College not only do I plan to finish pursuing my career, I plan to assist the program in any way I can. Nothing makes more me proud than to represent the UMLP on Lehman campus. Esteban Alcantara Physics Major Class of 2019 UMLP Inducted 2016 Diane Butler History Major Class of 2018 UMLP Inducted 2014 During my time at Lehman College the Urban Male Leadership Program has been a positive influence on my academic career. Through my participation in the mentorship program, tutoring, and workshops I have received honors throughout my time at Lehman. They have always supported me through anything I have needed help. I am so grateful to the staff for all they have done for me to help me get where I am today. The Urban Male Leadership Program has guided me on my path to success both in my academics and in my personal life. The program has opened so many doors for me and even though I will be graduating I am proud to be an inducted member of the Urban Male Leadership Program.

6 SAVE THE DATES SPRING 2017 Women s History Month Being a woman is hard, and being an African American woman is even harder. It is also a pride to see young Latinas and African American women make it in the world of higher education and beyond. It truly is a testament to the fact that we do achieve anything when we put our minds to it, and our hearts. I am grateful for the opportunities presented by the Urban Male Leadership Program. They embraced me with open arms, even before my freshman fall semester at Lehman College began. With the confidence and the backing of a program such as the UMLP, I got through my first year in college, pushing my GPA up two whole points. This past fall 2016 semester, I was Secretary of the African Caribbean Association Club and I received the UMLP 2016 Service Award at the UMLP Annual Fall Finale. 8 SAVE THE DATES SPRING 2017 I have been a part of the Urban Male Leadership Program for three years now and I am so grateful to have been a part of such a strong group of people. I've experienced and learned a lot during my participation in the UMLP. This is due to the diverse personalities, creative minds and overall genuine goal of everyone in the UMLP wanting the best for one another that I have come across with the UMLP during my time at Lehman. College can be very stressful and it is so reassuring to know that when times get hard you have a support system there ready to back you up and that is exactly what the UMLP has done for me. Whether it is academic support and guidance, needing a laugh or two from friends, or just personal advice, the UMLP has provided me with those kinds of resources that every college student needs when it is all said and done. In fact these are supportive qualities everyone needs. This is why I truly appreciate the UMLP's consistent support for its participants in and outside of the college. If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. Good luck to all Lehman College students. Edison Gaston Psychology Major Class of 2018 UMLP Inducted 2015 Sally Cabrera Anthropology, Biology & Chemistry Major Class of 2018 UMLP Inducted 2016 Being part of the Urban Male Leadership Program has definitely contributed to my growth as a student and as a person. I transferred into Lehman College as a sophomore and only thought about taking my classes and graduating. I came into Lehman only knowing one person, my friend since elementary school, Yesnuel Ramirez, who helped me expand my network. He was the one who introduced me to the Urban Male Leadership Program, as well as other clubs and organizations on campus. I became more involved in my school community and opened myself up more. New bonds were created with my fellow members that would be inducted with me, as well as previous inducted members who would look out for me and allowed me to be part of their UMLP family. I now have a family on campus that I can rely on and go to whenever I need help. Establishing this bond has inspired me to be that guiding hand to others on campus. I am a proud mentor of two intelligent young ladies. I am truly grateful that UMLP welcomed me as one of their leaders. I wish you much luck this year and I leave you with words of wisdom: "It's easy to break a chopstick, but they become unbreakable when we put all of them together"

10 SAVE THE DATES SPRING 2017 My first college experience as a freshman in fall 2013 at Lehman College was with the Urban Male Leadership Program. Staff members such as Dwight Stephenson, David Tavarez and Nathaniel Gasque helped changed my life and easily transition from high School to college. With the mentorship of Nathaniel Gasque who helped me throughout my fours year at Lehman College, he helped me figure out my interest in my future career and was patient with me when I changed my mind on daily basis, for that I am thankful for the Urban Male Leadership Program for giving students a safe space to find out your purpose in college. The workshops and events offered by the program helped me learn new things but also meet new people. My advice for the future UMLP members is to take advantage of all of the opportunities and services offered by the Urban Male Leadership Program, but at the same time give back to the program by volunteering and being active within the program. It is thanks to the Urban Male that I have such a drive in my academic studies and I will take what learned from the urban with me for the rest of my life. Thierno Diallo Earth Science Major Class of 2017 UMLP Inducted 2014 Candace Nepal Accounting Major Class of 2017 UMLP Inducted 2014 When I first entered the Urban Male Leadership Program, I initially thought it would be like a class or any other program; then I went to the retreat and my perspective changed about the program and about myself as a leader. It has come to the end of my college career, I reflect on all that I have gained from the lifelong friends I made here at Lehman, to the skills that will take me into the work force. My one advice to those who are reading this, get involved! Open yourself up to different programs and clubs that will help develop a better you because you never know what it may lead you to. The Urban Male Leadership Program is one of the many programs here that I participated in and although my major was different from everyone else, the people I met through this program are people I would never forget and that is something that can never be replaced.

12 SAVE THE DATES SPRING 2017 Transitioning from high school to Lehman College was easier because of the support I received from the Urban Male Leadership Program, from the one-on-one sessions I had with my mentor and staff, to the workshops on academics or social aspect of college or finance. These workshops have helped to better inform me with the knowledge I need to achieve while at Lehman. Whenever I need assistance with financial aid and tutoring or even maybe just pass by to say hi, I know that the Urban Male Leadership Program will be there for me and I know I will be there for them. 14 SAVE THE DATES SPRING 2017 UMLP Fall Finale 2016 December 2, 2016 (Left to Right): Cleveland E, Beckett, Jr., UMLP Assistant Director Jonathan Rivera, UMLP Mentee Erick Peguero, UMLP Peer Mentor Dinanga Ntumba, UMLP Peer Mentor Sheavonnie Wright, UMLP Mentee The UMLP Circle of Support Mentorship Program Links Lehman freshman, sophomore, and transfer students in one-on-one mentorship relationships with Lehman faculty, staff, and alumni. Research indicates that mentors can influence their mentee s development in several ways, including: Enhancing the mentee s ability to have positive relationships with their parents and their peers. Improving cognitive skills through meaningful conversations with mentors. As part of the UMLP Circle of Support Mentorship Program, I am able to have two amazing mentees; Nadia Baba and Jonathan Rivera. I, myself, have amazing mentors that have taught me how to love being a mentor and how to use my past experiences to teach my mentees to be successful. I love giving them advice on academics and life. A mentor should extend out there arms and help with any issue their mentee may have. The mentorship program is one of the reasons I truly love the Urban Male Leadership Program and I can't wait to see my mentees grow in the program and be amazing leaders in the Lehman College community. -Erick Peguero, UMLP Inducted 2016, Class of 2018 During the first few weeks of the 2016 fall semester, I was a little shy evolving into the college life, but with the help of the Urban Male Leadership Program I was able to adjust to my new life here at Lehman College. I owe my academic performances to the UMLP, for all their support and advice they have given me throughout the semester. I thank my mentor Erick Peguero, for all the advice and encouragement he has given me, in order to succeed at Lehman College. With the help of the UMLP and previous UMLP Inductees I was able to get the support I needed to succeed at Lehman College. To me the UMLP are not just my friends, but another family who I can always count on for support. -Jonathan Rivera, UMLP 2017 Inductee Candidate, Class of 2019
