4 Cam usnews La Salle University's Weekly Information Circular Page3 General News B Spotlight on Brother Joe Grabenstein rother Joe is regarded as one of the most visible people on campus- taking photos, meeting with people, and hurrying from one site to another. Yet as La Salle's one and only archivist- as well as the archivist of the Baltimore Province of the Christian Brothers- his work is not always recognized or understood. What he does is to provide archival materials, photographs, books, and other documents, about both La Salle and the Brothers to almost 500 clients who contact him each year. Why did Brother Joe decide to become an archivist? ''Love of history pure and simple," he quickly responds when asked. ''I taught history for 18 years; and while I love teaching, I began to experience burnout the last two of them. He adds, "I was teaching junior high school; and while the kids were learning their history, I no longer enjoyed teaching it." Brother Joe saw his situation as perhaps "God saying, 'Second Career'." And so he bought himself a copy of What Color is your Parachute? -the popular book on career changes-and began to consider what else he would enjoy doing. Because of his passion for history and his own hobby of accumulating materials while teaching, he decided to investigate archival work. To learn more about it, he volunteered at the La Salle Archives in the summers of 1989 and 1990 and assisted Brother Tom Warner, the former archivist. Brother Joe enjoyed his work so much those summers that he decided the next summer to enroll in the University of Maryland's library science program with its track in archival studies. After earning 36 credits in 11 months, he finished his degree (his fourth actually); and with the approval of his Superiors, he started working at La Salle in August 1992 as Brother Tom's full-time assistant. Then when Brother Tom retired, Brother Joe took over. The date was January 1, 1994, "a somewhat treacherous beginning," according to Brother Joe, because that day the Brothers' residence caught on fire. However, no major damage occurred to either the residence or the Archives, and Brother Joe's work there has continued ever since. When asked what he likes the most about being La Salle's archivist, Brother Joe replies that he enjoys "watching the expressions on the faces of people when the Archives supplies what they need in ways they never imagined." When giving tours of the Archives, Brother Joe says that people enjoy mainly the threedimensional items, the big scale model of La Salle's campus or the reliquary, for example. Next, he explains, they like the printed items like old yearbooks, copies of the Collegian, flyers, and other materials. His goal, he says, is "to one day have a small history museum." When asked what else he would like to acquire, he quickly answers "more room"; and while the Archives consists now of six small rooms in the lower level of College Hall, Brother Joe is hoping to acquire two more for storage on West Campus. Currently, he is painting his six rooms and preparing for a visit this month from other archivists who work at Christian Brothers institutions throughout the country. Following that visit, he will be hosting an Open House in October so that people at La Salle who haven't visited the Archives can come. If you would like to learn more about the Archives, (grabenstein@lasalle.edu) or call Brother Joe ( )-and come to the Open House on October 12 between 2 and 5 p.m.
