Though considered a novel, this book traces the real-life journey of lost boy Achak Deng during the Second Sudanese Civil War. After an assault on his native village of Marial Bai by Arab militia (the murahaleen), Achak traveled on foot through treacherous conditions to Ethiopia, then Kenya. Ultimately, he moved to the United States where he attended college. In 2006, using proceeds from the sales of the book, Deng founded the Valentino Achak Deng Foundation, which built and opened the Marial Bai Secondary School, the first fully functional high school in the area. 9:30-10:30 a.m. FRESH READS SPEAKER University Theater Joseph Atem was born in South Sudan, but, along with about 27,000 Sudanese boys, he was forced from his village during second civil war in the 1980s, between the Sudan government and the Sudan People Liberation Army. After walking a treacherous journey of thousands of miles, Joseph landed in a refugee camp in Kenya. He arrived in Memphis in 2001, where he met Stacey Hydrick and her family, who befriended Joseph and helped him to pursue his college degree in mechanical engineering at CBU. Since then, Joseph has received a

7 Masters of Engineering Management and two certifications IT and packaging engineering, and is now working at FedEx while he works on his PhD in leadership and organizational change at Walden University. 10:30-11:30 a.m. FRESH READS DISCUSSION (students only) Breakout rooms TBA Faculty, staff, and alumni will facilitate small group discussions of What is the What. Career Services will discuss job and graduate school placement outcomes, internship opportunities, and employment trends. Transitions Parent Program: College is a time of transition for the family. There is a new sense of freedom for student, as he/ she becomes more responsible for his/her education. Parents build a foundation for their student prior to college; once he/she becomes a student at CBU, we build on that foundation. We encourage parents to approach the experience with an open mind, to read cues that their student gives, and to provide support to their student. Dr. Paul Haught, Vice President for Academics, will share information to assist parents in supporting their students during this important time of change. Emotional Support for Your College Student: The transition to college is an exciting time of growth and exploration for most students. This sense of excitement is sometimes coupled with uncertainty and stress as students struggle with the new demands of college. Dr. Tim Doyle, Associate Vice President for Student Life, and members of his staff will address some of the challenges that first-year students may face. He will also offer information and resources to help parents recognize potential issues and support their students emotionally during this time of change.
