1 MOUNT HOREB HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER January 2015 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Thank you for all the well wishes while I was out on medical leave. You never quite know how important your health is until you don t have it. I am feeling better and am back full time starting this month and I hope that continues! We are in flux a bit with the assistant principal position. Currently Sarah Straka is the acting AP, while she is also the 4K Principal. She is taking care of attendance and discipline among a few other duties. Jarred Burke, the district s Curriculum and Instruction Director was working in my place and has continued some duties here at the high school while I catch up. I have been grateful for both Sarah and Jarred s help! Final exams begin next Tuesday the 20th. No school on the 19th. Students are only expected to be in attendance during their final exam time. Campus is open for all students during finals. You will be able to print report cards and transcripts on Wednesday January 30th from Infinite Campus. You may see the in progress grades, but they will not be finalized until the 30th. If you need assistance with the parent portal, please contact Tammy Beranek at the District Office ext If you need a paper copy of the report card mailed home, please contact Colleen Kittleson in the Guidance Office at ext Thank you for your support in helping your student select classes for next year. We are in the process of finalizing all of the numbers to determine what classes will be running next year and how many sections of classes we need. Very few schedule changes are taking place as we are getting to our limit on rooms and class sizes. Once the master schedule is developed, staffing decisions are made. If any student would like to change their options for next year, please see a school counselor very soon to make the change. Much work takes place to develop the master schedule and make sure every student has the classes they want and need. I have had a few calls regarding the new assessments students are taking, in particular the ACT for Juniors on March 3. This is a free ACT and it does count for application to college. Students may take it more than once, but will have to take it at a testing site for the regular fee. See the Guidance Office for more information. We also have a test prep course, information is also in the Guidance Office. For students with disabilities, if ACT approved the accommodations, then the score can be used for application to colleges. If accommodations are given without approval, the test only counts for us and cannot be used for applications. Your student s case manager can answer any other questions. We will be giving the test on March 3, as all schools in the state are testing on the same day. Due to the nature of proctoring, we will not be holding school for the 9, 10 and 12th graders that day.

Stephanie Spoehr Principal ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS Activity Winter Weather Cancellation Notifications Sometimes school doesn t close but an athletic event may be cancelled. The fastest way to get notified of this kind of cancellation is to sign up for schedule changes on using the notify me feature. As soon as the schedule changes for any reason, you receive an . SPRING SPORT SIGN UP IS FEBRUARY 19 During the STAR period on February 19, students will be able to sign up for their spring sport. Make sure to get all their forms and fees in before the season starts! Student-athletes MUST complete or have on file, the following before they can start practice: Physical OR Alternate Year Card Code of Conduct Parent/Student Agreement (one/year) Concussion Waiver (once/year!) ART DEPARTMENT NEWS Come check out the high school Art Show and Sale at the Sommer House Arts Gallery. The gallery is located at 225 East Main Street and is right next door to Sjolind s Chocolate House. There will be ceramics, paintings, drawings, jewelry and more to view and to purchase. The show runs January 24-February 21, 2015 and will be open Saturdays and Sundays 11-4pm. Hope to see you there! 3 BUILDING TRADES OPEN HOUSE The Technology & Engineering Department proudly announces its annual Building Trades Open House on Sunday, January 25th, from 1 to 4 p.m. The new house is located at 128 West Gonstead Rd. Technology & Engineering students have once again designed and built a home in Mt Horeb. This year's student-designed project is a 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath, prairie-style ranch with a walkout basement. The students have demonstrated a tremendous level of teamwork and commitment in their achievement. The Building Trades project has, over the years, been recognized as an outstanding model of school, community & business interaction. This year s student-builders are: Jesse Bishop, David Mackler, Max Boelkes, Derek Yager, Marcel Drapeau, Nick Zander, Nicholas Gelly, Brayden Zweifel and Matt George, under the instruction of Keith Hutchison. 7 MUSIC DEPARTMENT NEWS A Taste of Jazz The annual jazz survey concert, A Taste of Jazz, will be presented on Saturday, January 31 in the middle school gym from 6:30 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 each and can be purchased in the music office of the high school or middle school. Tickets will also be sold at the door. Performing groups include middle and high school big bands, Dixieland Combo, Vocal Jazz, and Fiddle Bands. Guest artists for this year s show are The Big Payback, a nine piece band that plays jazz and rock music. Badger Conference Jazz Festival Students in the two high school jazz ensembles and the Dixieland Combo will perform at DeForest High School in the Badger Conference Jazz Festival. The festival is on Monday, February 9 in the auditorium at DeForest HS. Exact performance times will be announced shortly but all three ensembles will be playing in the morning. The event is open to the public at no charge. Concert Choir appears with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra The MHHS Concert Choir is one of four ensembles from the state invited to be part of a festival choir that will perform Vivaldi s Gloria in February. The concert will be performed in Marcus Center for the Performing Arts at 10:30 a.m. on February 12. Tickets can be purchased for $7.00 through Diane Dangerfield. Solo/Ensemble Season Music students are well into the solo/ensemble season at this point. The first performance will be during the Local Festival, held here in Mount Horeb, the week of February 2. Students sign-up for times to perform after school for one of the music faculty. Students who perform well enough are eligible for the next level, the District festival. This year s District event will be held at Edgewood High School on Saturday, February 28. State Honors auditions Students who signed-up to audition for spots in the Wisconsin Honors Music Project should have their materials ready soon as the audition day is approaching. The auditions are at Middleton High School on February 14. Students will get exact audition times from the state music office via . Fruit Sale The final fundraiser for students going on the New York Trip starts the week of January 19 as we hold our annual fruit sale. Orders will be taken until February 12 when forms and payments are due. The fruit will be delivered to MHHS on March 2.

8 Sun Prairie Jazz Festival Tuesday Jazz members will be heading to Sun Prairie on February 14 to once again be performers in the Sun Prairie Jazz Festival. They will spend the day working with professional musicians, attending jazz workshops, listening to other high school ensembles, and performing for adjudicators and at an evening concert. Details are available from Mr. Dorner about performance times. Community Band If you played in a band when you were in school, you are encouraged to be a part of our first winter season for the Mount Horeb Community Band. The group is open to anyone in high school and beyond. We ve had one rehearsal so far and had 45 members attend. We have three more rehearsals and a concert, then our season draws to a close. Even if you missed the first rehearsal, you are welcome to jump in NOW!
