THE SERIES -- PENN STATE Iowa leads the all- me series The Hawkeyes have won six of the last nine meetings, but Penn State won the most recent mee ng, 26-11, last year in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes are all- me at University Park. The Hawkeyes won the last mee ng at Penn State, also at the Bryce Jordan Center, 18-12, on Feb PA IN IA The Hawkeyes probable lineup includes three Pennsylvania na ves. Spencer Lee and Michael Kemerer both a ended Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, Pennsylvania, and Kaleb Young a ended Punxsutawney High School in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Lee was a three- me high school state champion from He suffered his only high school loss in the state finals in Kemerer was a three- me state runner-up before climbing to the top of the podium as a senior in He finished his senior season undefeated. Young won a state tle in 2016 a er consecu ve fi h and fourth place finishes his sophomore and junior seasons. All three wrestlers trained at Young Guns Wrestling, a Pennsylvania wrestling club directed by former Hawkeye Jody Stri ma er. UNDEFEATED WRESTLERS Iowa has three wrestlers entering Saturday s dual with undefeated records. They include Brandon Sorensen (18-0), Michael Kemerer (18-0), and Alex Marinelli (12-0). In the history of Iowa wrestling, 15 wrestlers have finished the season with a perfect record (minimum 20 matches). Four of those wrestlers were able to perform the feat twice. They include Mark Ironside, Lincoln McIlravy, T.J. Williams and Jim Zalesky. Iowa coaches Tom Brands and Terry Brands are among the 15 wrestlers. Tom went 45-0 in and Terry went 35-0 in SORENSEN S HOT START Senior Brandon Sorensen, ranked No. 2 at 149 pounds, has opened the season with 18 straight wins, including three technical falls, three major decisions, and six falls. This is the second me in three years Soresen has opened the season with at least 18 consecu ve wins. He started the season with 25 straight wins, a career-best winning streak. He opened the season with 17 straight wins. Sorensen is 33-1 all- me in Big Ten duals. His lone loss was a 9-8 decision to Zain Retherford in the second ebreaker last season at Carver- Hawkeye Arena. Sorensen is the lone senior in a young lineup. He has 59 career dual starts. Junior Sam Stoll ranks second on the team with 31 career dual starts. LEE AND MARINELLI CLIMB RANKINGS True freshman Spencer Lee and redshirt freshman Alex Marinelli have steadily climbed the na onal rankings since entering the Iowa lineup. Lee made his Hawkeye debut Jan. 5 against Michigan State and opened the dual with a fall in 46 seconds against Kayvon Foley at 125 pounds. He is 12-1 with four falls, five technical falls, and seven wins over ranked opponents. He debuted in the rankings Jan. 9 at No. 9. He has since moved up to No. 3 (Intermat). Marinelli made his collegiate debut Dec. 8 at Rutgers. He has since gone 12-0 with two pins, five wins over ranked opponents, and winning the Midlands championship at 165 pounds. He entered the Intermat rankings Dec. 12 at No. 13. He has since climbed to No. 7. He is ranked No. 4 by WIN Magazine. 22 STRAIGHT FOR KEMERER Sophomore Michael Kemerer has won a careerbest 22 straight matches da ng back to last season s NCAA tournament. Kemerer is 18-0 this season with seven pins. Kemerer had four pins all of last season in 36 matches. He has twice this season been named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week. Five of his seven falls have come in the first period. Kemerer earned the Most Pins/Fastest Time award at the 2017 Midlands Championships. He pinned four opponents in a total of 9:54. Kemerer is 18-0 for the second straight season. He opened his redshirt freshman year with 19 consecu ve wins.

The Hawkeyes star ng 125-pounder (NCAA qualifier) has a overall record (.901), and an (.940) mark in duals over the lasts 12 years. Nine of the previous 11 NCAA qulifiers have earned All-America honors (two NCAA tles, four finals appearances). UNDEFEATED FRESHMEN Redshirt freshman Alex Marinelli and North Carolina State s Hayden Hidlay (redshirt freshman) are the only two freshmen (redshirt and true) s ll undefeated in all weight classes (minimum 10 matches). Marinelli is 12-0 and ranked No. 7 at 165 by Intermat. Hidlay is 17-0 and ranked No. 3 at 157. APPROACHING 1,000 Iowa s overall dual meet record is (.799) in 108 seasons. The University of Iowa would be the fourth team in NCAA history to reach 1,000 program wins (Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Oregon State). The Hawkeyes have won 23 na onal tles and 35 Big Ten tles. Iowa s 54 NCAA Champions have won a total of 82 NCAA individual tles, crowning six three- me and 16 two- me champions. The Hawkeyes 112 Big Ten champions have combined for 199 conference tles. There have been seven four- me, 18 three- me, and 30 two- me Big Ten champions from Iowa. Iowa s 154 All-Americans have earned All-America status 324 mes, including 19 four- me, 37 three- me and 39 two- me honorees. NEW YEAR S RESOLUTION... A 1996 Olympic gold medalist and member of wrestling s Hall of Fame, Brands is only the eighth wrestling coach at the University of Iowa. The former Hawkeye wrestler was a four-time All-American and three-time national champion ( ) at Iowa. He has a (.904) overall and 90-9 (.909) Big Ten coaching record at Iowa, and a (.842) career mark. In 11 full seasons as Iowa s head coach, Brands has led the Hawkeyes to three NCAA and four Big Ten team titles, crowning 10 NCAA champions, 15 Big Ten champions and 61 All-Americans. Iowa has had 89 Academic All- Big Ten recipients, including a school-record 12 in The Hawkeyes have qualifi ed 100 wrestlers for the NCAA Championships in the last 11 years, sending the entire 10-man lineup in 2009, 2010, 2014, and Iowa has also won or shared eight of the last 10 Big Ten regular season titles. Iowa also made another entry in the record books, setting the national collegiate dual meet attendance record of 42,287 when Iowa defeated top-ranked Oklahoma State, 18-16, on Nov. 14, 2015 at the Grapple on the Gridiron at Kinnick Stadium. Iowa has led the nation in attendance in each of Brands 11 seasons, setting an NCAA all-time attendance average of 12,166 in Brands was named 2008 NWCA Coach of the Year after leading the Hawkeyes to their fi rst NCAA team title since 2000 and their fi rst Big Ten team title since He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2010, becoming the fi rst coach in conference history to earn the honor in three consecutive seasons. Brands served as head coach at Virginia Tech University for two seasons ( ), recording a dual mark. In his fi rst season with the Hokies, Brands led the team to the 2005 regular season Atlantic Coast Conference title, set a school record for dual meet wins (16) and had a school-record fi ve wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships. During his tenure, Virginia Tech crowned fi ve ACC champions and had two All-Americans. Senior heavyweight Mike Faust was named 2006 ACC Wrestler of the Year. Prior to taking the helm at Virginia Tech, Brands was an assistant coach at Iowa for 12 seasons ( ). He helped the Hawkeyes to a dual record, seven NCAA and eight Big Ten team titles, while crowning 23 NCAA champions, 73 All-Americans and 36 Big Ten champions. He was named the National Wrestling Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in In 2004, he was one of three coaches for the U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team, participating in Athens, and in 2016 he was named a volunteer coach of the United States Olympic team in Rio. Brands also served as assistant coach for the U.S. Freestyle World Teams in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2013, 2014, and He was named Freestyle Coach of the Year by USA Wrestling in 2002 and He has coached a number of other U.S. teams in international competition. As a competitor, Brands won the 1996 Olympic freestyle gold medal at pounds in Atlanta, Georgia. He also won a gold medal at the 1993 World Freestyle Championships in Toronto, two World Cup gold medals (1994, 1995) and was the 1995 Pan American Games champion. He won four U.S. National titles ( ) and made four straight U.S. World or Olympic teams ( ). Along with his twin brother, Terry, Tom was named 1993 USA Wrestling Athlete of the Year, the 1993 John Smith Outstanding Freestyle Wrestler, and 1993 Amateur Wrestling News Man of the Year.
