Head: Mary McMahon, Library Director Disposition by Council: City Manager: Wyatt Shields FWS City Attorney: Patrick Taves JPT 9/18/14 CFO: Richard LaCondre RAL REQUEST: The Library Board of Trustees requests that the Mayor and City Council members review and recieve the FY2014 annual report of the Mary Riley Styles Public Library. RECOMMENDATION: No formal action requested. BACKGROUND: The Library Board of Trustees is presenting the Library s FY14 Annual Report. It highlights the following: For the sixth year in a row, the Library was designated a four (4) Star Library, a national award that was given to only 263 out of 7,570 libraries in the United States and to only 5 in Virginia; The library is one of only 111 libraries in the United States to have won the award all six years. This past year saw the largest number of participants register and participate in the Summer Reading Program over 2,000 adults, children, and teens. 654 programs were presented to the public, with 18,924 people attending an 8% increase over the previous year. The library experienced the highest circulation ever 461,394 items were checked out, an increase of over 3% from the previous year. A teen poetry contest and student art show took place at the library, in addition to the annual Peeps program. 2,803 new cards were issued; almost 87% of City residents have a library card. 316,430 people visited the library almost a 6% increase from the previous year. 67,749 questions were answered--almost a 4.5% increase. There was a 10% increase in the number of reserves placed on library materials. Staff and the public worked with library consultants to develop a library long range service plan and space needs requirements for the next 20 years. A successful Food for Fines campaign was held: 1,076 items were donated to the Falls Church Community Service Council, Inc. for its food bank. The award-winning Rolling Readers Precision Book Truck Drill Team (library staff) performed in the annual Memorial Day parade. A 3D printer, an Eagle Scout project, was provided and installed at the library. FISCAL IMPACT: None. TIMING: Immediately.
2 Mary Riley Styles Public Library Annual Report FY2014. For the sixth year in a row, the Library Journal s national ranking of public libraries identified the Mary Riley Styles Public Library as one of the top 263 libraries in the nation, out of 7,570 that were rated. The library received a rating of 4 out of 5 stars and is one of only 111 libraries in the US that has won the award all six years. The rating is determined by analyzing statistics that describe library service outputs, such as number of visits by patrons annually, circulation, public internet computer usage, and program attendance. Statistics in this report (on the back page) will show just how busy the library has been this past year. McMillan Pazdan and Smith, EsoArc Studio of Falls Church, and Godfrey s Associates conducted a Long Range Plan and Space Study for the Mary Riley Styles Public Library. Consultants met with citizens, Library Board, library staff, City officials, and other interested parties to listen to their ideas and needs for library service in the next 20 years. A report was generated and presented to the City Council and Planning Commission. While the building option selected by the Board was not approved in the Capital Improvement Projects budget, an alternate amount of money was approved by the Planning Commission and the Board instructed to further refine the space study. Currently the collection has 64 titles, and we hope to expand that number in the coming year. For more information go to: fallschurchva.gov/downloadable The library upgraded all its public computers with new machines and new software: Windows 7 and Microsoft Office Reaching Out 1,438 children registered for our annual Summer Reading Program an all time record! A student art show was co-hosted with Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, and Youth Services staff participated in the middle and high school afterschool book clubs. The Armchair Travel video program continued at the Senior Center on the 4 th Friday of each month. The Library helped celebrate the Tinner Hill Blues Festival by hosting an author/singer for children. 120 N. Virginia Avenue Falls Church VA
3 Book discussions groups for all ages met during the year, and we also held Paws to Read events where children read out loud to therapy dogs helping them gain confidence with both their reading skills and being around dogs. A successful Food for Fines campaign collected 1,076 items, which were donated to the Falls Church Community Service Council, Inc. Library staff marched in the Memorial Day Parade with its acclaimed Rolling Readers Precision Drill Team. Staff began working with an Eagle Scout candidate on a 3D printer project for the public.
