7 From the State Director... Franklin S. Allaire State Director Hawai i State Science Olympiad This certainly has been an exciting year for the Hawai i State Science Olympiad (HSSO). What started as a small group of students, teachers, and volunteers on Oahu has blossomed over the past eight years to become a full-fledged statewide organization that includes five regional tournaments on Kauai, Oahu (2), Maui, and now Hawai i Island. Regional Science Olympiad tournaments, in partnership with l o c a l c o m m u n i t y c o l l e g e s a n d organizations, has enabled more schools, students, and teachers to participate in one of the most exciting team-based STEM competitions in Hawai i. Education, especially STEM-education has been in the news a lot lately as more and more people realize that a highly qualified STEM workforce is a key to the future success of Hawai i, our country, and the world in general. Recognized as a model program by the National Governor s Association, the National Science Teacher s Association, and countless public and private STEM-related organizations, Science Olympiad provides students the opportunity to showcase their gifts and talents both locally and nationally in a wider range of topics than any other teambased science competition in the country. While other competitions focus on one area of science, Science Olympiad covers them all! Students interested in astronomy, biology, chemistry, engineering, forensics, geology, medicine, physics, rocketry, and more can easily find a home in Science Olympiad. The need for the kind of tournament that Science Olympiad delivers, as well as the professional development we offer teachers and parents, is evidenced by the dramatic expansion HSSO has experienced almost every year since our first tournament in This year alone, participation in Science Olympiad increased from 48 teams to 70 teams (almost 1,200 students)! These tournaments are made possible through strategic partnerships with both public and private institutions such as the Imiloa Astronomy Center, Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association, BAE Systems, Dow AgroSciences, Kauai, Leeward, and Windward Community Colleges, UH-Maui College, UH-Hilo, and Sygenta. We also invite you to contact each of the participating schools to congratulate them and encourage their future participation in Science Olympiad. Additionally, we invite you to join us on Saturday, March 3rd to cheer them on and celebrate their successes. The winners of this year s tournament will be invited to participate in the 28th Annual National Science Olympiad at the University of Central Florida.
