1 Student Government Minutes Meeting IV October 15, 2001 I. Order of Business A. Call to Order President Joe Russo called the meeting to order at 4:10 P.M. in the Campus Center Conference Room. B. Financial Report Treasurer Dan Russo reported that the Student Government account to presently be $24, D. Grant Requests Various clubs and organizations of King s College joined the Student Government Meeting to request money from the treasury. Each brought a list of activities and service projects that they planned on doing this semester, along with a requested amount of monetary funding desired. E. New Business 1. Peter Stark, Food Service Director Peter Stark, Director of Food Services came to speak to the General Board about beginning a Dining Services Advisory Group. The group would be comprised of a diverse pool of students from throughout the school. Peter also told the group that he would like to see the administration and/or staff of King s getting involved too. The meetings would be bi-weekly, lasting no longer than 45 minutes each. Peter also encouraged talking about the idea to other students because they can make the differences and impact things that they do not like or would like to see changed. Peter also notified the General Board that Connerton s Café is scheduled to open October 23, but maybe delayed until the following week. No official change has been made but the actual opening date will be posted via or posters. 2. Introduction of Freshmen Class Officers The Class of 2005 officers introduced themselves. The list is as follows: President Stephanie Gonshor

2 Vice President Chasity Force Secretary Heather Musanti Treasurer Bergen Mesko Representatives Brian Gula, Jackie Virus, and Jennifer Zaccaro 3. Constitution Committee Update Secretary Holly Miller updated the General Board on the Constitution Committee s meeting and the changes that the Committee would like to make. Secretary Holly passed around sheets regarding the suggestion of having the student body vote on changes made to the constitution. She asked for comments on this idea and also requested that the classes to go back to their meeting and discuss the proposed idea. Secretary Holly also went over job descriptions and the improvements that the Committee would like to make to them. She notified everyone that they would be receiving a description of their job and duties in the mail within the next couple weeks. She also requested that everyone look at the job description and see if it fits what they are currently doing in their position and to also make any additions to them that may apply. 4. Volunteer Services Dawn Morton, Vista Volunteer thanked the General Board for participating in the September 11 fundraiser that was sponsored by the Office of Volunteer Services. She also reported that 31 students participated in the Fall Serve over the Autumn Break. For National Hunger Awareness Month two students, Jonathan Leonard and Jennifer Cahill will be participating in a conference for hunger in Memphis, Tennessee in November. Dawn also told the General Board that National Hunger Week will take place on the campus in November and asked that Student Government assist with the week s activities. Dawn also reminded the General Board of all the great volunteer opportunities available around the King s campus. The service project binder is available in the Office of Volunteer Services and other news can be found in the Chapel s Campus Notes. She also told us that McGlynn Learning Center will be coming to King s on October 29 to talk about volunteer positions available. Also, on Sunday in the Chapel there will be classes for English as a Second Language from 2pm to 4pm. If anyone is interested volunteers are needed and they can come to the Campus Center Conference Room on Wednesday at 6:30pm for training. E. Unfinished Business 1. Off Campus Council President Joe Russo announced that the Off Campus Council is still in progress and that a hard copy and an was sent to all students at King s updating them on its progress. 2. North Main Street Crime Watch President Joe reported that several Student Government members attend the North Main Street Crime Watch. He also reminded everyone that the meetings will be held on the first Monday of each month at 7pm in the Holy Cross Church. This month s meeting went well and was a good experience that he hopes other students will partake in the near future. President Joe also said that once the Off-Campus Council members are chosen they will also be expected to attend thes e meetings each month. 3. Block Party President Joe told the General Board that although there has been a lot of work done by Erin Rafter and Glenn Locke, the Block Party will be postponed until next

3 semester. Since the weather is getting cold and the students are busy with midsemester tests and papers, it was felt that it would be better to have the event during the spring. President Joe announced another kind of community bonding event that would incorporate the whole City of Wilkes-Barre. Mayor McGoarty, Father O Hara, and the current President of Wilkes University are planning a city-wide clean-up with the neighbors and students. More details will follow on this event. 4. Campus Center Update President Joe told the General Board that everything for the weekend s events are going well and as scheduled. He asked Marsha Miller, Kelly Prussock, Margaux Malimban and Becky Rizol to get involved with some of the public relations work for the event. He also said that has been working with these memb ers of this PR group and thus far all is going well. On November 17, Saturday night, there will be a dance party on the lower level floor of Regina Court from 8-11 pm. The night should be packed with fun including the radio station KRZ airing live from the event. Student Government will be cosponsoring this event with ACE. President Joe also announced that the PR Committee will meet on Tuesday at 7:30 in the Student Government meeting for anyone who would like to attend. He also asked the Class of 2005 to send a representative to sit on the committee. 5. Student Directory Vice President Meghan Barrios said that although she has been having some difficulty with the Computing Center sending the drafts of the directory out, things are now going mo re smoothly. She anticipated that the directory be done by the end of October. G. New Proposal 1. Student Government Minutes Secretary Holly suggested that because of the increasing cost of copying the minutes for everyone, that instead they be posted on the Student Government web page. After a quick discussion, the group unanimously voted in favor of the proposal. Secretary Holly also thanked everyone for coming to their office hours and for those who have not been coming to please do so. H. Liaison Reports 1. Lucy Viera, Secretary of the Class of 2002 and the Liaison to the Multicultural Office met with the Director Mr. Kashif Kahn to discus some important topics pertaining to Student Government. One of the major questions Mr. Kahn had was why is there no International Student Coordinator on the Student Government General Board. President Joe told Lucy to let Mr. Kahn know that we did advertise for the position in the spring and had no one interested. President Joe also encouraged Lucy to get his office involved in perhaps selecting one for the Board this semester. 2. Chris Pugliese, Secretary for the Class of 2004 and the Liaison to the Athletic Department met with the Director Mr. Thomas Baker to discuss some important issues pertaining to student s issues with King s athletic facilities. Chris said that Mr. Baker does indeed acknowledge the fact that lights at the basketball court are needed and put on the budget every year but often, for monetary reasons, are ignored. Mr. Baker suggested that Student Government go to the Grounds Keeping Department or Student Affairs

4 Office for more assistance. He also mentioned the idea of the Class of 2002 leaving the lights behind as their gift to the College. Mr. Baker also addressed the gym availability and the hours that it is open for non-athlete students. Mr. Baker replied by saying that he is pushing for another gym for this purpose, since there is an obvious issue right now. He said until then he will attempt to elevate the problem by posting the open hours of the gym for non-athlete students. I. Coordinator Reports 1. Erin Koscinski, Security Coordinator reported that the King s Escort Service has now been taken over by the Emergency Response Team and Criminal Justice Club. These two groups will be meeting to set up a plan to revive the organization. She also said that she still hasn t brought up the subject of cameras on campus but will make sure to do so in her next meeting with the Director of Security, Mr. Pat Cawley. Kathy Kopko, Sophomore Class Representative updated the General Board on the fact that there are telephones in the parking lots and asked Erin if by any chance Mr. Cawley could improve their visibility or install more to help those who may need them. 2. Marsha Miller, Elections Coordinator thanked everyone in the General Board that assisted in Freshmen Elections. J. Class Reports Senior Class President Kevin Barr announced that the Senior Class is busily working on the Commencement Ball and Commencement speaker plans. The class will be selling Halloween-o-Grams soon. He said that the funnel cakes will still be sold at other athletic events and will serve as a fundraiser for the Seniors. This Wednesday at Beer Boy s will be the third Senior Social. He reported that for a service project the Seniors will be sponsoring the Tree of Life in the Chapel. The Senior Bulletin Board is coming soon so and all should anticipate seeing it in the near future. President Kevin also reported that he will be running a trip to the Art Museum in Philadelphia, also in the near future. Junior Class President Tom Durhammer spoke about the t-shirt plans and designs that are currently in progress. He also said that the class is working on Commencement Speakers and have also set up a meeting with Father O Hara to discuss Commencement. Soon the class will also be working with Dave Devine to find a service project for the Fall Semester. Sophomore Class President J. Neil DellaCroce reported the class is attempting to sell the leftover t-shirts from last year. He also said that currently a bi-weekly Sophomore column is being worked on to update the rest of the students in the class on events. During the classes last meeting service pro ject ideas and Christmas Fair fundraisers were also discussed. President Neil also told the General Board that the Sophomores will be completing flyers notifying students about the North Main Street Crime Watch. K. Statement From the Chair President Joe thanked everyone for sitting through the lengthy grant request meeting. L. Adjournment President Joe adjourned the meeting at 5:22 p.m. Respectfully Submitted,
