5 AAA Hosts Bicycle Helmet Safety Event Free Bike Helmets Available for Children Ages 5-12 Bicycling provides great exercise and enjoyment for children of all ages, but every year hundreds of cyclists are killed and thousands more injured in preventable crashes, reports AAA. To help prevent head injuries, AAA is conducting a free bicycle helmet fitting event on Saturday, April 18, from 9 am to at its Bellevue office located at 3905 Twin Creek Drive. In partnership with the Cornhusker Motor Club Foundation, the event will feature free bike helmets for children ages 5-12 and safety literature. Children must be present to be properly fitted for their bicycle helmet. Various styles and popular colors will be available while supplies last. According to the most recent statistics available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 726 pedalcyclists died in motor vehicle crashes in 2012 and an additional 49,000 suffered injuries. The number of deaths reported for 2012 is six percent higher than the 682 killed during the previous year. Children 15 and younger accounted for 9 percent of all pedalcyclists deaths and 20 percent of all those injured in traffic crashes in A bicycle helmet can reduce the risk of a serious head injury by up to 85 percent. To properly fit a helmet: Place the helmet evenly on the head, about one or two finger widths above the eyebrows. The helmet should rest on the head and not tilt forward or back. Adjust and add more foam pads, which often come with the helmet, to ensure it fits snugly on the head. Some new helmet models do not require additional pads. Tighten the chinstrap as snug as possible with space for one finger between the neck and the strap. Adjust the side straps if needed, which connect front to back, just below the ears. For more information about this event, contact the Bellevue AAA office at
