3 Academic News Supporting Collaboration in Your Face-to-Face Class with Technology presented by Information Technology Many tools essential to fostering student collaboration in the online and hybrid environments are also useful for supporting collaboration in the face-to-face environment. Class Discussions Even though students often discuss topics in class, you may find there just isn t enough time for everyone s voice to be heard. You may also find that some students are reluctant to speak in front of their peers. One way to provide students with more opportunities to interact with class content and connect with one another is to use a discussion forum in Blackboard. Similarly, students could use blogs in Blackboard to share ideas with classmates. As with discussion forums, students can post their ideas and comment on their classmates posts. Group Projects Another way to encourage collaboration among students is to provide opportunities for them to work in groups. Blackboard provides quick setup for groups, and allows students to use a number of resources to facilitate their projects. With Groups, you can provide students with their own blog or discussion forum, a wiki where they can build documents together, and a file exchange. Virtual Meetings Students who live off-campus may find it difficult to participate in group meetings or come to office hours. Wimba Classroom provides webconferencing so that students can meet to discuss projects, practice presentations, or attend virtual office hours at a time that s convenient for you and for them. Additional Information Visit for how-to videos and other ideas for supporting collaboration in your face-to-face courses. Video tutorials for this article at tech.lasalle.edu Another way to provide a space for groups to work together is to create a class wiki. Wikis encourage shared authorship while allowing you to track individual student participation. Some faculty members use wikis to build class resources such as study guides and chapter summaries. 2 La Salle University

5 General News CORA Early Years at La Salle Preschool and Child Care This September, we will proudly introduce a new initiative for children ages 3-5 in conjunction with La Salle, CORA Services, and The Clarke School. Our purpose is not only to serve families of La Salle and the surrounding community, but to also assist The Clarke School in introducing and including their students into a typical classroom setting, enabling them to eventually enter kindergarten without the use of special services. We realize that parents are a child s first and foremost teacher and it is our mission to come together with families to create an educational team that will best foster maximum development and growth in each child. To this end, CORA Early Years at La Salle Preschool and Child Care Center offers parents a program that is child-centered. Children are encouraged, through daily activities, to develop their social, physical, and cognitive potential to the fullest. Our Center has been designed to offer a safe, predictable nurturing and low stress environment. The emphasis is on allowing children to grow and develop at their own pace. We also encourage each child to make their own level of competence, to determine when they are finished with an activity, to put away their materials and to change activities in a purposeful manner. By doing so, children gain experience in planning and making decisions. Because we believe parental support and involvement are vital to a program, we welcome and encourage parents to share their special interests or talents and visit, as their schedules permit. Rooted in a tradition of care and compassion, the Mission of CORA Services is to assist children, youth and families experiencing emotional, academic and social challenges which impede their development and productivity. A private, not-for-profit service organization located in Philadelphia, PA, CORA Services provides an array of comprehensive professional services focused on prevention, intervention, remediation and referral assistance. OPENHOUSE Please join us for our Open House on Thursday, September 6th on West Campus. We would love to meet both you and your child and provide your family with a tour of our new space. Registration packets will be available and special registration rates will be available for families of LaSalle. For additional information on the Open House, or to schedule a personalized tour, please contact Mary Doughty at or mdoughty@coraservices.org. 4 La Salle University

The Archbishop accepted our invitation. Mayor Michael Nutter has agreed to join us for Opening Convocation. A letter of invitation to Surgeon General Regina Benjamin is in preparation and will be sent to her office. Ed Turzanski will personally follow up the letter. We have no additional information about Ben Bernake. Trey Ulrich is working on selecting the Finley Award honoree. It is possible that a group, not an individual, will receive the award. Additionally, while no names have surfaced yet, the Hall of Athletes event will include an anniversary-related speaker. The Day of Service Subcommittee Br. Bob Kinzler distributed a list of Day of Service work sites, which use or previously used The University s licensing committee met in January, and the 150th anniversary logo was introduced and shared with SMA, La Salle s licensing firm, who will funnel it to vendors through the approved licensing system once appropriate uses are identified. Day One is among the activities with the most immediate need. The spring issue of La Salle magazine will promote the 150th anniversary. The issue s cover story is about couples who met at La Salle and married. By early April, the La Salle website s home page will include a link to the 150th anniversary site, and the magazine s spring issue will invite the submission of courtship and many other kinds of memories to that website. The Flat Explorer will appear in the magazine as a cut out and includes suggestions for displaying it in photos to be submitted to the website. In addition, more than 1,000 Flat Explorers will be printed and made available as handouts at events and other occasions for students, faculty, staff, and alumni. It will also be available online on the 150th anniversary website. 5 La Salle University

7 General News Sesquicentennial Anniversary Committee With the help of Diccicco Battista Communications, the promotion strategy currently under development includes an August publication of Jack Rossi s La Salle history book, as well as billboard, radio, and print advertising, and a 150th La Salle University anniversary digital animated banners during 54 of the scheduled Phillies home games. Media blitzes are planned for June, when the anniversary celebration begins, September-October, around the Lasallian Day of Service, and March, around Heritage Week and the Charter Dinner. The University also plans to request the PECO Crown Lights Display for a key date during the year. During the follow-up discussion, Jim Gulick reported that an 1863 United States flag, donated by an alumnus, may be displayed during some of the celebrations. He also said that Athletics is considering placing 150th anniversary logos on the field and walls, purchasing throwback uniforms, implementing throwback pricing, and hosting various student competitions. The Fun Subcommittee In an effort to reach students before the semester ends, students are working on a Flat Explorer student-directed marketing plan. 8 General News A Note from the Ranjo Family Thank You To La Salle University The Ranjo Family would like to thank the students, faculty, and staff of LaSalle University for helping us remember and celebrate the lives of Leo and Steven Ranjo. Steve s passion was to mentor young students and to help them achieve their goals. He would have been honored by the number of students and staff who paid tribute to his memory. Your showing of support truly was a testament to the number of lives he touched, and it served to comfort us. Your love and your kindness during this difficult time has been greatly appreciated, and we hope that these words of gratitude reach anyone at LaSalle we did not get a chance to thank personally. Steve and Leo will always be in our hearts, and we know that Steve will live on through the students he mentored as they continue to dream big and achieve their goals. Thank you again for your support. With all our love, The Ranjos. 7 La Salle University
