NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT Susan Peal NLI 101 FUN CHALLENGING HELPFUL APPLICABLE PRIZES! 1
Declared an early academic qualifier. Mike will now graduate June 2017 instead of the original graduation date of June
Can Mike sign a NLI before June 2017? Yes, Mike can sign during the signing year if he is positioned to enroll Fall If a prospective student-athlete (PSA) is classified as a junior in high school, supporting documentation is necessary to show that the PSA is on track to graduate early. To determine when a PSA can sign an NLI, ask yourself, can the PSA enroll the upcoming fall term? The PSA can sign an NLI if projected to enroll the upcoming fall. Sully signed a NLI with Scary State and attended the signing institution in Fall Sully attended Fear Community College in Spring Sully plans to attend Monsters University (MU) in Fall
Can Sully sign a NLI? Is Sully under the NLI recruiting ban? Is Sully subject to the NLI penalty? Sully did not fulfill the NLI before enrolling at the twoyear college. Sully would need to graduate from the two-year college to satisfy the NLI. The NLI Recruiting Ban is no longer in effect since Sully attended the signing institution. A NLI could be signed if Sully is in position to graduate from the two-year college prior to Fall o NLI can be signed before graduating transfer is permitted to sign an NLI. Must graduate from the two-year college to satisfy the previous binding NLI. If PSA has satisfied the previous NLI (attended signing institution for full academic year), graduation is required if needed to satisfy NCAA transfer rules. 4
The NLI Recruiting Ban only applies to signees who are still PSAs. Once the signee has triggered studentathlete definition (attend first day of class or practice), NCAA permission to contact applies. Squishy plans to attend MU in Spring Squishy will not graduate from high school until December Can Squishy sign a NLI? Squishy cannot sign a NLI since he will not be in position to enroll Fall When can Squishy sign? Squishy could sign a NLI in November 2017 and enroll Spring
The athletics aid accompanying the NLI can include athletics aid for spring 2018 (Division I multiyear aid). o Not permissible to include spring athletics aid in Division II. If a PSA enrolls midyear, the NLI is fulfilled after completing the spring and fall terms. The institution is obligated to provide athletics aid for the full academic year ( ). If PSA will not graduate from high school until December, the PSA could not have enrolled at an NLI member institution in the fall. The PSA must be able to enroll the upcoming fall term in order to sign during the previous signing year. Don signed an athletics aid agreement with MU in November 2016 but did not sign an NLI. Don now wants to sign an NLI in June 2017 with MU. 6
Can Don sign an NLI in June after signing an athletics aid agreement during the early signing period? Yes, Don can later sign an NLI if he previously signed an athletics aid agreement. The institution would attach the previously signed aid agreement to the NLI. A PSA does not have to sign a new athletics aid agreement. The athletics aid agreement is not binding on the PSA. PSA can sign NLI with same institution or another institution after signing an athletics aid agreement. The date signed on the athletics aid agreement can be earlier than the date signed on NLI. The athletics aid agreement cannot be signed prior to an initial NLI signing date. The November and April NLI signing periods each have an initial signing date. Art is a qualifier. Art will not meet admissions requirements at MU until Spring Art plans to enroll at Eerie Junior College for Fall 2017 but not sure if he will enroll part-time or full-time. 7
Can Art sign a NLI? No, Art cannot sign a NLI since he will not be admitted Fall o If Art did sign but later denied admission, the NLI would be declared null and void. Art can sign a NLI in November 2017 and still enroll Spring Full-time or part-time enrollment at the two-year college does not make a difference. What if MU wants Art to sign only an athletics aid agreement without the NLI? The institution could offer only spring 2018 athletics aid since Art will be a midyear enrollee. Athletics aid must be for a full academic year only if accompanying an NLI. Art could sign the athletics aid agreement during the NLI signing periods and does not have to wait until November 2017 if signing an athletics aid agreement without the NLI. A PSA in a sport with an early signing period can sign NLI in November and enroll midyear. Midyear enrollees signing NLIs are not limited to football PSAs. The football signing date in December January is specific to two-year college transfers graduating at midyear and enrolling at the signing institution midyear. 8
Randy signed a NLI in May 2015 with Creepy College. He did not attend the signing institution. NLI record shows a valid NLI. In Fall 2015, Randy enrolled at two-year college, Petrified Tech, and signed another NLI in November 2016 with Ogres University. NLI record shows a complete release for the second NLI. Randy plans to graduate this June 2017 from Petrified Tech. How could two NLIs be on record for Randy? Randy was permitted to sign the second NLI because he was a two-year college transfer. The second NLI was recorded as a complete release. Does Randy still have a valid NLI with the first signing institution? Randy s second NLI was contingent on graduating from the two-year college. The second institution granted a complete release before Randy graduated from the two-year college. Until graduation occurs, the first NLI remains valid. 9
Is the NLI Recruiting Ban still in effect? The NLI Recruiting Ban would not be in effect since the academic year ( ) has elapsed for the first signing institution and the second institution granted Randy a complete release. Can Randy sign with MU; his third NLI? Randy could not sign a third NLI since the second NLI was signed in November 2016 during the same signing year. Check the NLI history on your IRL. Another NLI cannot be signed in the same signing year even if the signee was granted a complete release or if the NLI was declared null and void. 10
MONSTER MESSAGING Coach Available Video Capable My signee is on campus ready to start his Spine Tingling summer class. Not the same monster I saw on video! Unbelievable, I offered a scholarship to this scary creature! 11
Is there anything MU can do to null and void the NLI since the signee misrepresented who he was on his recruiting video? The NLI cannot be declared null and void under these circumstances. If the athletics aid can be cancelled for misrepresentation, the NLI would be null and void since athletics aid is cancelled. The NLI is contingent on the athletics aid agreement. The only exception is if the athletics aid is cancelled because the student-athlete quit the team. NLI remains valid under this circumstance. Check your athletics aid agreements for specific clauses allowing the athletics aid to be cancelled. MONSTER MESSAGING Coach Available Video Capable Thanks! One more question. Hate to bother you. I know you are at some compliance thing today. I bet that is a lot of FUN with a bunch of compliance people! 12
MONSTER MESSAGING Coach Available Video Capable This recruit is a game changer. MU will win the Scare Games with this beast. He returned the NLI and his signature is printed. That s how he writes with his tentacles. Is this okay? The signature is permissible since this is the PSA s unique written name as a way to identify him or her. Electronic and digital signatures are also permissible. Must ensure the digital signature is authenticated. Apps are available to sign documents and send electronically. KAHOOT TIME! Get ready to play! 13
